Default What Delighted you in 2018?

I'm going to piggyback on a thread from last year and ask, Which fragrances delighted or surprised you in 2018? They could be new releases or oldies. Anything you sniffed causing a raised eyebrow and/or a raised heartbeat? You know what I mean....

Two fragrances absolutely delighted me this year. Sahara Noir by Tom Ford. I was on the hunt for an incense-centered fragrance, and found several very nice ones, but this was my favorite. I landed a full bottle (it's now discontinued), and it's just fantastic. Also, one of the few fragrances that garnered me a random compliment in the office from a fellow co-worker who I know also likes fragrances.

The second scent that I have found entirely delightful is Soft Lawn by Imaginary Authors. It just makes me so happy to wear it. It's playful and fun and light and refreshing. It's quirky and comforting at the same time. It's quite a unique green fragrance. Wonderful.

I would also say that I'm delighted by the house of SIXTEEN92. I've been getting most of her sample sets, which she seems to release quarterly. So unique in tone and style. Really out-of-the-box stuff that keeps me fascinated.

I was delighted to meet the original poster during 2018!

I also found a bunch of good deals on vintage fragrances on eBay during the year such as Guerlain Habit Rouge edt 50-ml spray for $65 shipped and Versace L'Homme thin script 100-ml splash for $75 shipped.

All fragrances from The Le Monarque House, The FO'AH house, The 100% Absolute Oils from Clive Christian, The Saint Mariner from PP, and many others.

Two chocolates surprised me: Angel Muse and Guerlain Coquin.
I had smelled Coquin at some earlier point, but this past year I found out it blossomed with my chemistry, which is a rarity.
Of course I knew Angel in a couple iterations, but that Muse is really delish, and DH loves it.
Never would have predicted I'd find anything new I'd like as much in one year, even more of a surprise that they're both chocolatey and yet very different in how the Guerlain is quiet and the Mugler is outgoing.

Well I'm adding both to my test list. Thanks for those. And I agree with you - I'm delighted with the unusually atmospheric yet wearable fragrances of Sixteen92. Need to order more samples.....

    Awwww...thanks

Nice. Doesn't a good deal make a fragrance even more delightful?

Thanks Hednic. I always enjoy the photos of the bottles you post. Especially Le Monarque. Extraordinary.

Oh I love both of those. And I would add Angel Muse to my "surprised" list because I dislike Angel on my skin (chocolate BO--like locker room BO not good skank). But I LOVE Angel Muse.

The one that slapped the biggest smile onto my face last year was Vaninger by Oliver & Co. I'm going to steal LiveJazz's phrase and say it smells like fizzing vanilla-ginger Pop Rocks (even though I still maintain it smells like sarsparilla). Whatever it is, it's one happy scent.

A more serious perfume that delighted me was Corsica Furiosa by Parfum d'Empire. The most bone-dry Mediterranean herbs and grasses imaginable.

    Both warranted immediate FB purchases.

For me it was the opportunity to secure 3 extremely rare Creeds: Scent of Oger, Verveine Narcisse, and Bayrhum Vetiver. Two of the three I enjoy very much!

Ah Vaninger. I have a decant of that. It's really different. Fills a spot in my wardrobe that nothing else comes close to.

Yes: Off the top of my head (and I'm sure there are more): Creed's gorgeous Angelique Encens, discontinued and prohibitively expensive. I treasure the remains of my generously supplied sample. And Tom Ford's Amber Absolute. After it dried down a bit I couldn't take my arm away from my nose and it quickly became my favorite amber. I purchased a hefty decant. It's also discontinued I believe. So two older scents but new to me.

I love that one, too. I'll probably go FB on it by the time late spring rolls around here.

For me in 2018 I was pleased with my discoveries in the designer houses of Lalique and John Varvatos.

More FBs from these are a certainty for 2019.

Biggest delight hands-down has been Cartier. This is a design house that "gets it" and can be both artisinal in design and mainstream in appeal.

    Santos
    Pasha
    Déclaration (and flankers)
    Eau de Cartier
    L'Envol

All fantastic or at least really good, unique, and also dialed in to be very approachable to casual interest folks. Everyone who has smelled them on me and chose to comment had something good to say, and none of them feel like sellouts save maybe Déclaration Parfum, which is the only negative Cartier experience I've had.

Dare I say this house is almost on blind-buy levels of trust with me.

I'd say some of the stuff I've bought and have enjoyed a lot through the year -

Acqua di Gio Profumo (my most worn in 2018)
    Baie de Genievre
    Egoiste
    Paco Rabanne pour Homme vtg.

I've enjoyed Rose Jam and Sleepy shower gels from Lush.

I've also been delighted by a couple of others I've purchased - Tribute Attar and Chypre Palatin, but these haven't been worn as much.

While I've tried a variety of samples, surprisingly nothing has really blown my fume fuse.

This made my day! Nearly everyone that i've shared samples of Angelique Encens to loved it.

Also Tom Ford is releasing Amber Absolute again. $320 for 50ml bottle very expensive! That's more than what I paid for when I purchased the 100ml during the rerelease back in 2015.

None of these came out this past year but they are fairly recent. Of the few I tried that did come out this past year nothing intrigued me, but I have several things on my to-sample list.

Things I'd like to sample from 2018 are Mona di Orio Santal Nabataea, Commodity Nectar, Cartier Carat, and A Lab on Fire And The World Is Yours. It might be a while before I can afford to do so.

Good to know. I wonder if it will smell the same.... I will stick with decants for now. (My next full bottle will likely be a Tihota backup. That one still thrills me!)

I added quite a few lovely fragrances to my collection in 2018, but nothing surprised and/or delighted me more than my discovery of the house of Amouage in late December, particularly Memoir and Lyric. So impressed am I with Amouage that in less than a month's time, I have collected six Amouages. I have been in perfume heaven these last couple of weeks or so!

No house has impressed me this much since Guerlain. I like CHANEL, too, but I like Amouage a lot more. For the first time ever, if I were forced to pare down my collection, I know what I would keep without hesitation: my Guerlains and my Amouages.

    Hi Hazel5 and all-

This year, I was perfectly delighted by these three vintage perfumes, when I was able to get well-preserved bottles of them in extrait form:

    Schiaparelli Shocking (1937)

    Givenchy L'Interdit (1957)

    Revillon Carnet du Bal (1937)

I also enjoyed two new releases very much (still testing and getting to know them, wondering if they are going to be FBW for me):

    Bianchi The Lover's Tale (2018)

    Auphorie Mayura (2018)

l bought & loved And the World is Yours, a creamy, voluptuous & radiant orange blossom that feels incredibly glamorous to wear.

New-to-me perfumes that made a big impression:

OSA by Note di Profumum, a beautiful Carnal Flower-style ylang ylang.
Khol de Bahrein by Stephane Humbert Lucas, like being pampered, preened & powdered at a luxurious spa.

l have yet to try my sample of Amouage Love Tuberose, but l have high hopes for this one.
Dusita's Fleur de Lalita is also now on my test list.

    Oh, that's an easy one.

Etat Libre d'Orange's Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes. Shalimar EdT with a Thai food twist. Perfectly wearable sunshine in a bottle. Instead of Shalimar's bergamot you get lemongrass, lime and limeleaf, and instead of vanilla you get coconut and steamed rice.

Hmm. Now I'm tempted. I've been sampling Cartier lately (Pasha and Pasha Noire yesterday, for example) and am rather impressed with the line too. Only downside is that I can't seem to find Roadster anywhere. Looks like it's been pulled off the shelves in my neck of the woods.

What delighted me last year? Quite a lot. I was happy to plow through some of the samples I've had laying around awhile. I acquired a massive amount of decants - too many to list.

For full bottles... Al Oudh by L'AP was new to me. I blind-bought a full bottle as I knew I would love it. It was a wise choice. I acquired many bottles, some vintage, at various flea markets, antique stores, and thrift stores last year. The best has to be my vintage Eau d'Orange Verte by Hermes. The more I wear it the more I love it. There were many blind buys, Ones that stand out as marvelous discoveries are Floral by Micallef, Genny Noir, and Noa Noa by Otto Kern. The latter two being somewhat older in their release but fine juice nonetheless.

I procured a few Crabtree & Evelyn scents before they become gone with the wind, as they are becoming hard to find. All blind buys as well that turned out delightful. My Christmas gifts from my husband, Jardins de Bagatelle and Valentina Poudre were as expected - glorious! The former, JdB was an old love from the early 90's that I knew I had to obtain again. The latter, VP had been on my radar since its release in 2016. La Vaniglia by Bois 1920 was another, new to me, that I had to have this year. Vanilla scents are catnip for me. This one, a bit spicy, filled a void in my wardrobe.

I was thrilled to find a vintage bottle of Nueva Maja even if the stopper gave me troubles. Once it was opened I wasn't disappointed. Maja, was my first perfume love, my first "mature" perfume acquisition as a teenager. I also found an older bottle of No Regrets by Alexandra de Markoff. It was wonderful to find it again, after only ever owning a miniature way back when. And finally, Purple Heart by Map of the Heart. I splurged heavily on this one. I had to have it after sampling. The bottle itself is a work of art.

I'm sure there are more "delights". I've rambled on more than I usually do - out of character, for me.
