Default The absolute weirdest fragrance love ever (a Maison Margiela and hotel story)

Right now, I am in Chicago for a much needed break. I decided to stay at the St. Jane, a relatively new hotel (more on that in a moment). I expected a slick room, with Art Deco decor. And the customer service wowed me.

What I didn’t expect were Maison Margiela toiletries in the slick marble-tiled bathroom. In Replica: Jazz Club, a longtime Basenotes favorite. First, I used the body cream last night to counter rough winter hands. Then, I took a shower with the shampoo and soap this morning. Afterwards, I thought “did I just discover my next fragrance?”.

26 years ago, this would have never happened. I remember a hotel in Tulsa having just one thing in the bathroom: a bar of Safeguard. But over time, I rejoiced as hotel toiletries improved in quality and fragrance. I remember jumping for joy five years ago when Cedar Point switched to Bath & Body Works, a quantum leap from what they had used previously. And I had seen other hotels up their game.

But Maison Margiela was the first case study that made me want a matching eau de toilette just as much. I really loved the smell of Replica: Jazz Club just based on the smell of the toiletries at the St. Jane. (I will also add that the St. Jane has exclusivity in Chicago for the Maison Margiela brand in hotel toiletries). Replica: Jazz Club was stocked in the usual shampoo, conditioner, body cream, shower gel, and bath soap. Frette towels accompanied the Maison Margiela products. All smelled great - I’ve been looking for a workplace-safe yet edgy woody oriental for an upcoming transition. This is it.

Even weirder, I went to a nearby Apple Store to play around with an iPad Pro that I am seriously considering. While testing out iPad features and comparing screen size choices, I did a guessing game with an Apple employee about where I found Replica: Jazz Club. The guy was stumped, then shocked when I showed him that it was the St. Jane on a demo iPad. And I told a friend of mine that is also into the hobby. He was shocked because he loves Replica: Jazz Club. It shows that even powerful brands can do unexpected collaborations.

As for the St. Jane itself: It’s located on the 200 block of North Michigan Avenue where the Hard Rock Hotel used to be. FWIW, the Hard Rock used a house brand of toiletries - while decent, they definitely weren’t Maison Margiela.

Tomorrow, before heading back home, I plan to buy a full bottle of Replica: Jazz Club eau de toilette at a nearby Nordstrom. And I plan to tell the Nordstrom SA the reason why I want this: a hotel room. The funniest part? By going off peak, the EDT will cost more than what I spent for one night at the St. Jane.

The hotel is great in other ways too. But this isn’t my last visit: I’m already planning my second visit to the St. Jane. And I have never said that about a hotel before, either. Guess it has something in common with stink water.

Sounds like a fun experience. I appreciate you sharing this story. I do enjoy the hotel soap/shower products they provide and they've definitely got better over the years. They're fun to collect sometimes.

What kind of iPad pro are you getting? 12.9?

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful narrative. Made me want to revisit Jazz Club all over again.

I agree that a collaboration with a suitable hospitality partner could do wonders for a brand. A memorably pleasant stay would indeed induce me to purchase memorabilia especially of the scented kind. Some years ago I discovered Fragrance du Bois when I was staying at The Fullerton and ran into Zegna Essenza line at the Ritz Carlton. I bought these fragrances as scented reminders of the wonderful time spent with loved ones at these establishments. Another favorite hotel The Fullerton Bay complimented my existing Bottega Veneta fragrance collection with toiletries from the same brand.

11”. The 12.9” isn’t worth $200 more for 1.9 extra inches of screen space on an otherwise identical iPad. I would rather use that extra $200 on a keyboard folio or more fragrances.

I have the 12.9'' , I thought it was a good investment, great for traveling and for work purposes.

Apple does get everyone with the keyboard and pencil. It's a good $330 additional investment.

Glad you are enjoying it so much. Frette linen? That must be quite luxury.
If you're paying more for the perfume than for the room, it must have been a spectacular deal.

I wonder who's in charge of the perfume/beauty contract of Maison Margiela. The brand is now controlled by Italian entrepreneur Renzo Rosso (of Diesel and other brands).

L’Oreal is the fragrance licensee, and La Bottega is the hotel toiletries partner of Maison Margiela.

And yes, it was a massive deal via Hotwire, largely due to January being an overall slow month for tourism in Chicago. It doesn’t pick up again until the Auto Show in February. Still, $77 per night before taxes for the St. Jane is cheaper than the $120 MSRP for a 100 ml Replica: Jazz Club - and a great way to discover a fragrance.

I recall reading that the reason Le Labo Santal 33 became so ubiquitous was due to them partnering with huge numbers of hotels to provide toiletries.

Wow, $77 for a hotel swanky enough to use Frette linens? You could have made your money back just by stealing a towel or a sheet!

I don't see so what's so weird about any of this. Just seems like some clever marketing that other hotels and perfume brands have used for years.

Not really a fan of that scent or the brand itself, but they do use clever marketing to get their stuff on the shelves and draw attention to their products. That's an accomplishment in itself these days.

True to my word, I did buy Replica: Jazz Club at Nordstrom today. All three SAs that I talked to had seen an uptick in sales of the scent recently. They did not, however, know that the answer was the St. Jane two blocks down the street stocking bath products in the fragrance. Other than that, I had an excellent conversation with the SAs about the line when buying a bottle. They all loved Replica: Jazz Club as well.

I also spoke to a rep for Malin + Goetz (itself no slouch in hotel partnerships) and mentioned my late boss loving their body wash. He felt my, and the Fort Wayne ad community’s, loss seventeen months ago. As I have become very partial to Caswell-Massey Number Six bar soap as of late (the ingredients list mentions oakmoss!), I have no current plans to try it.

Then again, I said the same thing about my MBA exactly two years ago. One month later, everything changed. Times change, right down to hotels and the stink water business.

    Great story, thanks.

I didn't like Jazz Club when I tried it a while ago but when I was staying in DC with a friend (who is starting to get into fragrances) he had a half-used sample of it and I took it with the intent to re-sample it. So I will based on this thread.

Like you, I was 'introduced' to a fragrance in a hotel myself - many years ago my ex-partner and I stayed at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Puerto Rico and they had Bvlgari body products in the bathrooms - specifically the Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc soap, shower gel, lotion, etc. I had never smelled it but wow just that one night smelling it won me over as a fan. It's not a very special fragrance, but the white musk/tea notes paired perfectly with sun-tanned skin, beach, etc. I will never quite forget that memory and every time I see a bottle of that Bvlgari fragrance I think about that trip.

One time I was staying in my former boss' apartment in New York (Midtown) and his apartment he co-owned with a French couple. I guess they left some of their personal toiletries in the apartment and I stumbled upon Kelly Caleche Body Cream by Hermes and of course I just *had* to try it on after a shower. Same thing as above - I was really impressed. I was already familiar with the smell of KC but the Cream really gave me a new insight into the fragrance - the leather notes were more prominent, so was the rose. I couldn't stop smelling my arms. I never looked at Kelly Caleche quite the same way again.

I might, and I would love to, but a big portion of my life is awaiting a major development. It's been a very rough past two years for me with too much uncertainty that I've been trying to escape, and only now have I been able to find a potential escape path. I won't know about it until late next week, and I will not be able to make any commitment until at least two weeks after the development unfolds.

Fun story. I picked up a bottle of Jazz Club in 2018. It's a gem imo and deceptively complex. It's a scent to easy disregard at first. I certainly did. I smelled it on a buddy some time later was blown away by it.

You’ll probably get better performance from the shampoo than the EDT, Jazz Club for me was just coloured water and I bought 2 bottles a year apart to try and give it another go. Thankfully By The Fireplace has great performance.

It is nice though to get a little fragrance gift when staying at hotels or travelling, I’m currently on holidays and flying Etihad, have been receiving & collecting gifts from Acqua Di Parma on each flight

I get 12+ hours out of one spray of Jazz Club. But to be fair, the body cream of the same scent lasts longer than many EDTs.

Then again, fragrance longevity is strange. For some, Eau Sauvage lasts all day and for me it lasts two hours. For me, L’Humaniste lasts all day, but many complain about the longevity.
