Question Clean Rose Contest: YSL L'Homme Ultime VS Cartier Déclaration d'Un Soir

Cartier Déclaration d'Un Soir (2012) is a surprising rose-focused scent in the Déclaration line that dials down most of the cumin funk and leather of the original, keeping the citrus and cardamom but replacing the "dirt" with a "clean" Damask rose with dry woods. Cartier Déclaration d'Un Soir is something of a dark horse champion among modern masculines and even earned an "Intense" flanker of a flanker later on. I've seen this flanker turn up more than any other Déclaration version, so despite a lack of advertising, it seems to do well.

Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Ultime (2016) would show up 4 years later, on the 10th anniversary of the original Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme (2006), and showcased much the same formula, with a less-prominent rose and greater focus on woods to tie in with the DNA of L'Homme. Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Ultime is also eau de parfum strength but uses noticeable amounts of ambroxan and norlimbanol "karmawood", making it seem more "pop music" and less artsy compared to the classy Cartier.

Similar concepts a few years apart... who did it better and why?

I'll give my opinion a little later on, but for now, let the battle begin!

Declaration d'Un Soir EdT, without any hesitation.

Why? Because the entire L'Homme line is uninspired and insipid.

Declaration d'Un Soir EdT on the other hand is not only nice, but evocative. Dry, dusty with an airiness that makes it very attractive; I really like the character of that scent. The only gripe could be the base is less exciting, and synthetic woods - but I feel here is one example where the synthetics keep it contemporary in a good way, makes it radiant (I bet this one has quite a healthy dose of Iso-E), while the weightlessness adds to the allure. The cut is slim and sleek, no ambrox-laden 2010s alpha male bro baggage, and the rose adds a nice androgynous appeal.

I probably make it sound bigger than it is, but it ain't big. It's beautiful. It also suits me in spades, so maybe I'm biased. It isn't substantial, but it is memorable, to me, anyway.

Rose with a squeaky-clean base around it, as opposed to a rose with a dirty oriental base or barnyard oud base.

Personally, I much prefer the Cartier, and I believe it can be had for about half the price of the YSL?

I just noticed the 'clean rose' part; FWIW, it's among my favourite fresh roses together with La Fille de Berlin and Rossy de Palma.

Love Declaration d’un Soir. Often heard it described as clean rose + pepper. Always gives me a mental boost when I wear.

I like and own the regular and Intense versions of YSL L’Homme, but never particularly liked Ultime.

Personally liking Declaration d'un Soir more-mainly thanks to a very smooth yet also very nuanced rose rendition, while also combined with the distinctive spiciness of the Declaration line

    Declaration d'un Soir easily.
I love the chamaeleon'ish Cashmeran backbone that's at the same time minty, peppery, airy, bone-dry, sand-like, turpentine, wet paint.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, I find both pretty repulsive. I love rose too, but not in either of these. D'Un Soir literally smells like Raid roach spray to me, and Ultime.. wow what a let down.. it's so sour! Sour as hell, with that fake woods smell. I heard the Intense version of d'Un Soir is much better though... I have not tried it. I still have a small bottle of d'Un Soir left, maybe I should give it another try. I know Ultime is just flat out bad. The only positive to it is that it lasts forever.

I actually prefer the Cartier Déclaration d'Un Soir myself but I do like the L'Homme Ultime too. Looks like the Cartier is winning by a landslide, and is proof that Mathilde Laurent is a very capable house perfumer for Cartier, while YSL -who is still commissioning out to the big chem firms like they always have - is experiencing diminishing creative returns.

You might want to add the disclaimer that the conclusion is based on a Basenotes poll (sample selection bias, anyone?) with N=9.

Declaration d'Un Soir has one of the best openings of designer releases from last decade and that is not a small thing because in modern designer perfumery opening is only thing that counts. Unfortunately, the rest is rather uninspiring but I have Intense version on my to do list.

The YSL received some interest in previous threads, Some even commented it was good. I tried it and it was laughably bad. In the same "nice try, but next time don't try" category like Tommy Hilfiger Loud.
Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Pomegranate Noir, Midnight in Paris EDP, Feeling Man, Essence of John Galliano, Azzaro pour Homme (vintage),...etc.

Seeking decant/sample of Aramis Calligraphy Rose, Penhaligon's Esprit de Roi, PdE Ambre Russe, Jil Sander Feeling Man ....etc. I have samples to swap.

The Cartier is real tidy. Clean, alluring, keep sniffing your self good. Cardamom is a winner here with the rose.

The YSL is good while the Cartier is excellent, perhaps in my top 10 designer fragrances ever when I consider how much I use it.

My mind was made up before I created this poll, as I had already sampled, reviewed, and purchased both before making it. However, knowing little about if anyone else saw these two scents as comparable, I wanted to see where everyone else was in this regard. But thanks for being passive-aggressive.

I'm probably in the minority then, but I enjoyed my sample of Ultime much more than the Cartier. The Cartier had a weird floral smell to my nose. YSL was spicier and more masculine. I'd argue that it would be a good cheaper alternative to something like Rose 31, but that might not fly with the basenoter crowd. To each their own.

As usual I find myself disagreeing with the majority on here. For me it’s easily Ultime, however I did a complete flip on both after owning them and getting through about 10-15ml, I went from liking the Cartier to disliking it and being indifferent towards the Ultime to really enjoying it

I'm also going against the grain here, but only because I love L'Homme Ultime. I wonder how many people have tried L'Homme but not L'Homme Ultime and lump them together. I've tried both and find them very different. I will tell you though, that I've never tried the Cartier. So how can I defend L'Homme Ultime against it? Only because it is the very fragrance that hooked me on the fragrance world and exploring new scents. I actually get very little rose from it. Here is my review:

L'Homme Ultime is the first cologne that I purchased since high school, and it made me fall in love with the world of fragrance. Or, less generously, it was the drug that hooked me. L'Homme Ultime is elegant and sophisticated while presenting unabashed confidence. It gives me a vibe of James Bond in a crisp dark blue suit. This L'Homme flanker finds a perfect balance between the freshness of the fruit notes and the warmth and sexiness of its vetiver and cedarwood. Be careful spraying on though, it's STRONG. On my skin, it has potent sillage and longevity. I find just a small spritz in two areas will do. I consider it more of an evening cologne than work cologne due to the strength. My 6 yo daughter finds it too strong on me for her young sensibilities, as a reference, so I save it for date nights.
