Default Do you wear challenging fragrances with friends, in public etc?

Sometimes it seems fragrances containing a lot of oud or other difficult challenging notes can be a bit much for other people. Do you ever mind this?

Absolutely! 90% of my collection are challenging scents! If they die, they die!

When you're a night auditor at a cheap motel, all alone dealing with the occasional shitty guests, you sometimes have to.

Well, you ever been crowded and shoved around by Chinese tourists trying to grab from a basket of fruit?

I am never really sure if the fragrance is 'challenging' or not -- until people start to keel over!

No. I don’t really have many “challenging” scents. But the ones that are a little overbearing I do not wear out much.

A scent is only challenging because most people don’t like it. I always select my scent taking where / what I will be doing. Anything you spray on you becomes part of you and is a reflection of yourself and the image you are projecting. just like clothes. When you go out in public, your underwear goes on inside your pants.
    Current Summer Favorites:

    1. Xerjoff - Nio
    2. Tom Ford - Rive d’Ambre
    3. Dior - Homme Cologne 2013
    4. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    5. Armani - Code Sport Athlete
    6. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    7. Dior - Homme Sport 2008
    8. by Kilian - Straight to Heaven
    9. Ermenegildo Zegna - Sicilian Mandarin
    10. Creed - Pure White Cologne

for me, the "natural" fragrances involving ouds and strong rose scents and sandalwood are a bit "challenging."

My solution is to use a smaller amount.

I have a feeling my definition of challenging is not the same as the people I associate with.

I use a spray or two, no more, and small ones at that, for the strong Ouds and similar "challenging" fragrances.

Some of my family members are sensitive to oud, so I try to go particularly light on the trigger when I wear something and know I'll be around them. But I do wear what I want when I want.

At the very least always with the ones among friends and family who already know about even the most challenging fragrance interests, cravings, likings, acquisitions, genres, styles etc.

The Night Auditor returns from the restroom to see a group of Chinese tourists laying on the floor around the front desk, sleeping.
Annoyed, he approaches, as he inhales to yell at them it hits him -- they're not sleeping, they're all dead.
Hands are outstretched towards the fruit basket with desperate yearning.
    The basket is empty.

A BELL JINGLES -- The Night Auditor whips his head towards the front door as A MAN IN A PANDA SUIT flees the scene with the fruit in his mitts.

The Night Auditor gives chase, bursts outside!

    To an empty street.

The only sounds, the pounding of his heart and the buzzing of the hotel's red neon sign as it flickers.

On the far side of the street, an improbably pretty hooker in a blonde wig saunters into view....

    I don’t mind.

There are scents of mine that perform best for a certain occasion, setting, temp and/or time of day to be enjoyed.

If I'm wearing something tricky outside the house I'll just keep it under the shirt and no one seems to mind. The only time I frightened someone away (I think) was while wearing Imitation Man last summer. I was in a waiting room and the guy next to me got up and walked out and I could see him waiting outside the room until his business was finished. Oops.

That is very interesting that you associate oud and strong rose scents, which I can clearly see as "challenging", with sandalwood, which to me is as gentle as a lamb (at least the natural sandalwoods).

well I think because in "attars" and similar perfumes made by people like Areej, Bortnikoff, Ensar, they go together. Pure sandalwood I agree is very gentle...

    Ah, gotcha.

It surprises me that so many feel that sandalwood and rose are a natural pairing --- to me, that combo is like putting caviar on vanilla ice cream. I like caviar, and I like vanilla ice cream, but I would never want the two in my mouth at the same time.

I have been repeatedly groped on the crowded morning trains in Japan, when I went to school in the morning, does that count?

I've worn Leather Oud to work multiple times, with nary a comment, and friends who smell it on me only compliment it; I've never had a negative response. Same with stuff like Absolue Pour Le Soir. Kouros is one where I need more data, though my first wears of it among friends have been no problem at all. I think a lot of these "naughty" or "challenging" fragrances are more challenging sniffed right up close, not so much in their trail, where the animalics usually translate into just sweet and warm.

The two times I've had negative responses to what I'm wearing were recently when I came to work in the morning wearing Amber Absolue -- first time my boss was like, "yeah that one's a little much." The other time was years ago wearing Santal 33 (which I've come to really dislike), and some guys near me at a bar commented on how gross it was when people wear too much cologne. That stuff is REALLY radiant, so I don't blame them.

I wear challenging things out all the time and have never had a negative experience. In fact, I am wearing a dense Hindi Oud oil at work today. I wore D'Ambiguite to a party recently and had people taking deep breaths over me throughout the night.

    A little.
As long as friends switch it up, I don't mind putting up with a challenge once in a while. That's how we find out if they work for us, right?
I like a lot of old school stuff that's considered challenging, Polo for instance. So I might wear it to hang out with a close friend. But not with a group because I'm not trying to offend multiple people at once. If it's just one close friend, they'll tell me if it's good or bad.
