Default New Poll - Most Divisive Male Scent of All-time

On the heels of the Sauvage thread, I want to know. What is the most divisive?

I'm going all-time with Kouros, with Sauvage a close second. They both seem to hit people in the "divisive" sweet spot of love or hate.

    This is tough

I voted for Fahrenheit -- it seems to polarise the most people. Personally, I think it is incredible

I suppose Kouros isn't far behind though

    I picked Aventus.

The scent is not very polarizing, but the discussion around it sure is.

Sauvage is the most divisive based on scent alone.

    Kouros from the list.

I want to think Dior Homme Intense should be on the list because all of the reformulation discussions here.

I voted Kouros too, but as others pointed out, Creed is divisive in a different way. Sauvage doesn't feel divisive in this forum, though probably it would be in a mainstream user/basenoter way.

I voted Kouros. If anything, the Creed's are "divisive" because they are too mainstream, meaning that by and large they appeal too much to the masses. Sauvage is another scent that is geared towards being accepted by the majority. I think anything with prominent civet or cumin notes should be at the top of the list; for every person that enjoys it there is a person that thinks it smells like a bodily function.

I think there should be a distinction between:

    • most polarising scent
    • scent generating most polarising discussion

I would say most of the 'animalics' for the former, and Aventus/Creed/Sauvage for the latter.

    Didn't vote.

    Of all time - Kouros
I have rarely come across a woman that likes Kouros. Most have an involuntary response of the ‘squished screwface’.

The aversion to Sauvage though seems to be based more on how screechy and cheap it feels compared to the stink factor.

And the divisiveness of Aventus is linked more to the users than the scent. Talking about Aventus on Basenotes is akin to having leprosy in ancient times. It will get you banished to Spinalonga and anyone that so much as speaks to you will be stagmatised....until the end of their days.

Some fab pineapple and smoke smelling lepers though...

I voted Kouros for smell overall due to the animalic component combined with its proliferation in all but the most recent years. Joop Homme is close behind because of its thermonuclear sillage.

I think the divisive nature of both Sauvage and Aventus is limited to male hobbyists.

    1) Sauvage is the smash hit that nobody can avoid, combined with its very abstract composition that untrained noses don't seem to mind, leads to the frustration among the male side of the fragrance community that amounts to "Why does everyone love this shit so much? It's a totally valid frustration when there are thousands of alternatives but like Acqua di Giò in the late 90's, the hype and marketing is just too strong. This isn't the first hotly-contested and wildly-divisive Dior masculine we've seen, just the newest.

    2) Aventus is basically Sauvage for Colognoisseurs at this point, and is almost ubiquitous among male users, who get it in their head that it's more ubiquitous and successful outside the fragrance community than it actually is, combined with the insane culture around it, Creed's notorious retconned history, and implied class warfare arguments because of price point. All told, most arguments over Aventus are about what it means to be into fragrance itself, hence all the projections and internalizations in fighting.

I didn't even realize Geir Ness was a controversial fragrance.

Arguably the first Trump fragrance because it copies the Lauder for Men bottle shape (1985) unashamedly

See, that's the thing - the original fragrance generates light, rather than heat, because (a) it's vintage, and vintage people are (generally) civil, or at least civilized in their displeasures, and (b) people argue about the fragrance itself (or the bottle), in comparison to a respected classic. As a mod doing thread cleanup, it never got "ratioed" near as badly as Success or Empire.

What is divisive? Ah, there's the rub division!

Kouros from this list, but I feel Aramis deserves a slot too.

Creed really isn't relevant enough from the perspective of the fragrance industry for any of its scents to be considered divisive, or 'most' anything really.

A low-key, toned-down, oriental-leaning version of 1 Million. Once The_Cologneist helped me see that view of it, I really felt like I had gotten what was going on there.

"What is divisive?" can be catalogued with "What is niche?", "What is vintage?", and "What is a Unicorn/G.O.A.T.?" in the category of "Things never to ask male Basenoters if you don't want a thread lock".

Moral of the story: never ask us to define our own terms.

I agree, but I also add that big-picture thinking usually isn't the strong suit of intensely-invested hobbyists. That whole "you make your own reality" thing really screws with perspective. I'm guilty of it too even though I go out of my way to avoid being boxed in.

I'm wondering if there's a generation gap involved regarding Kouros ? I remember clearly when it was first released almost 40 years ago and to be honest there wasn't any particular fuss about it. It was extremely popular and got a lot of love. I don't remember it being at all devisive.
At the time most people thought of it as a very "clean" smelling fragrance, (perhaps a little induced by the advertising of the whitewashed/ deep blue imaging)...with the clean cut athletic guy.
Interestingly, at that time, cards carrying the tester vials showed an olfactory pyramid with the base notes listed as patchouly and vetiver, (no mention of civet or musk).
It was was not considered 'dirty', but rather a clean smelling fragrance for the modern sporty male.
