Default Which note is the best friend of Oud?

We’ve been showered with Rose-Oud combo these days. Any other notes fit to go with Oud?

Personally I think osmanthus and Oud has great potential.

Saffron also appears often with oud in arabian perfumery.

But rose-oud seems the perfect marriage, no surprise it reigns supreme.

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.

    Plum, maybe leather?

I'm thinking of Byredo's Accord Oud, of course

Stereotypically for M.E. perfumes you see oud mixed in with amber, sandalwood, rose, saffron and musk notes. Sometimes Jasmine and henna too.

Personally I think other florals like tuberose, champaka, ylang-ylang and gardenia (if the oil has the funky facets) make a great combo with oud. I assume most white florals would pair well with oud. Depending on what you want a softer oud or just a touch of animalic oud might be sufficient.

    Good suggestions!

Yes I agree it depends on what kind of Oud it is. I imagine an indolic Jasmine would be a good pair to slightly animalic Oud. Also some savory spice goes well with leather-y or “oily” Oud.

You tease me. I would love to smell a gardenia with oud.

The chypre accord (and particularly the oakmoss) used to be very well accented by a light, clean oud. Great combination. Had a lot of future - before the Perfume PTB decided no oakmoss for you. Instead, I'm pretty sure that oud was the designated replacement. Oud was pushed in at the same time oakmoss was pushed out.

A bit of a long-term observation - personal opinion. Both oakmoss and oud have a certain type of sharp facet at their center (easiest way I can describe it) that is so memorable and useful in creating things that say "I smell really good, sharp, and strong, but really unnatural - I'm a perfume!" There are not a lot of things that do that and are not threatening (think ammonia, turpentine, etc.)

Chypre's sharpness is cleaner and more useful in a wider variety of classic styles, IMO. Oud drags in a lot of other perfume baggage - not nearly as clean. It has a universe all its own. It's damn near married to rose. I think this limited the reach of oud. It makes a nice addition to French-style perfumery, but it's simply not able to become central.

You can see old threads here documenting the rise of oud and the fall of oakmoss. Interesting criss-cross over about a decade. I'm somewhat surprised that nobody really bucked the oakmoss restrictions until now.

I recall smelling a fragrance that was an oud-patchouli combo, but I can't remember the name. It was pretty good though.

    More Oud.
    Sandalwood.
Jasmine (especially in combination with some rose).
    Tobacco (as in Xerjoff Zanzibar).
    Vanilla.
    Saffron.
    Lemon/bergamot/citrusses.

Rose and oud is great, but you've got to find the right one for you. There are plenty of diverse offerings.
