Thread: Leathers..

  1. #1

    Default Leathers..

I own and like Knize Ten, Tom Ford Ombre Leather 18 and Bel Ami Vetiver.

I have had multiple bottles of K10 over the past decade, am on my 3rd bottle of TFOL and have just purchased BAV.

All very different. TFOL is the most leathe like and I suspect the most appealing to others. K10is very much one for my personal enjoyment as too polarising for general consumption. Initial thoughts are the BAV seems to be a happy conpromise betweent the two...

Curious as to the forums views on

    1. Best for work
    2. Best for "date night"
    3. Best overall

Consider trying Floris Leather Oud. A very different leather fragrance in that it's very light, very fresh, very clean. Of any of the "leather" fragrances I've tried, it'd probably be the most appealing in an office setting.

I don’t know what is best for what, but I do love leathers.

Tom Ford Tuscan Leather is for me the king of leathers. Not so easy to wear, but it gives a real kick.

Ombre Leather is good and much more wearable than Tuscan Leather, but it doesn’t have the same wow-factor. I have a decant of Ombre Leather 16, and I will buy a bottle of Ombre Leather 18 later.

L'Artisan Dzing! is one of my other favourites. This one can be challenging, but if you get what it is all about, it is just fantastic. Leather heaven.

Acqua di Parma Colonia Leather is also very good. It has some similarities with Tuscan Leather, but tamer and a citrus base. It is worth testing.

Tom of Finland is a fun Leather fragrance, if you can ignore the image it paints. It is a little synthetic and sweet, but fun to play with.

Laurent Mazzone Hard Leather is another of my favourites. The smell of black oily leather boots. It’s intoxication and sexy, with a hint of animalic.

Puredistance M is supposed to be the ultimate leather fragrance, but it did not quite click with me. It is far too expensive for what it is, but some people really love the M.

Clive Christian C for Men is for me a better version of Tuscan Leather. I really love this one. It is too expensive for me to buy, but I did enjoy the sample I bought a lot.

    Edit: I forgot a couple.

Montale Aoud Cuir d’Arabie is a leather fragrance that smells like a freshly ridden stallion with saddle and everything. It’s really good if you can handle the animalic.

Dior Privée Leather Oud is the most challenging leather fragrance ever made. It was way too much for me, but I see where they are going with this one. I heard the later reformulations are less challenging as they have softened the animalics, but I haven’t sampled it.

Etro Gomma. Similar style of leather to Knize Ten, but drier and with artemisia and jasmine instead of all the Knize florals.
Gucci Guilty Absolute; rough and unsubtle, but in a good way.
So far, April has delivered snow, hail and sleet : Hermes Equipage and Equipage Geranium; Dior Fahrenheit, Jacomo Jacomo de Jacomo, Gucci Guilty Absolute pour Homme; Knize Knize Ten, Etro Gomma; Knize Knize Sec, Piguet Casbah. Celebrating the arrival of Spring with Penhaligon's Ostara and Piguet Futur.

I'm not sure what the question is? Are you asking the best from among your list? If so, I'd say -

    #1 - Knize Ten
    #2 - Bel Ami Vetiver
    #3 - Knize Ten

If you're just looking for suggestions for leather scents (there are so many of them, and so many different styles), then I'd say -

#1 - Eau d'Hermes, Equipage, Moschino pour Homme, Bel Ami, Derby vtg., Declaration, Davidoff, M, Christopher Street
#2 - Cuir Mauresque, Cuir Cannage, Leather Oud, Tuscan Leather, Antaeus, Cuir d'Ange
#3 - Declaration, Moschino pour Homme, Bel Ami (vtg.) / Bel Ami Vetiver, Derby (vtg.), Christopher Street, Antaeus, M, Tuscan Leather, Fahrenheit, Cuir Mauresque

RD's Fetish pH and Fetish Parfum are in the same ballpark as M, but I find M to be more versatile. I don't care a lot for Chanel's Cuir de Russie or Knize Ten, though I like the Knize Ten Golden Edition.

However, this is just scrathing the tip of the iceberg.

We've also completely left suede out of the equation, there are some nice stuff like Cuiron or Daim Blond.

Yeah, I forgot Cuir Cannage. The smell of a beautiful leather bag. Cuir Mauresque is also very good, but they have tripled the price out of my reach. I really hate Serge Lutens now.

Among the three you have, Knize Ten is my favorite in all circumstances so far. Not sure whether it is more polarizing that the Tom Ford, the TF is quite sharp.

More broadly: 1. Chanel Cuir de Russie 2. ELdO Rien 3. Bandit and Rien.

Knize is superb. I worry about the impact is has on others though. I have bought it consistently over the past ten years and jeep coming back to it...

I totally forgot about Cuir Cannage, too, and I really love that one. I'm treasuring my bottle since once it's gone, it'll be difficult to get another.

One I enjoy is Cuir Sacre by Atelier Des Ors.

You are lucky to have a bottle. I have never been close to a Dior boutique where they sell these, so I only have a tiny decant that I ordered online together with Fève Délicieuse. And now they are discontinued, and that sucks.

Would also suggest Regent Leather by Thameen for a refined leather scent.

Youve burned through 3 bottled of Ombre Leather 18 already?! Dang!
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

Good work. It's definitely worthy of being a signature scent (I break from frag-lover consensus; as far as I'm concerned, it's much better than Tuscan Leather).

I'm still working on my Ombre Leather 16, which I got not long after release. I only wear it on special occasions.

Out of curiosity, why did you choose Bel Ami Vetiver over Bel Ami? Especially in vintage, Bel Ami is far and away better (i.e. more leathery) than the later flanker.
Very clearly a case for corn flakes and classics

Also adding a few options with more limited leather notes that might still be worth considering:

Cuir Veitiver-almost a leather in name only combined with powdery vetiver,

Habit Rouge EDP- the EDP flanker/concentration bringing out a stronger leathery note than usual in addition to the trademark sweet development of this fragrance,

vintage Givehcy Gentleman-an abundance of patchouli and some of the more sensual, even provocative leather types,

Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir-this particular Eau Sauvage flanker combines the citrus-floral-woody main theme with a leather tone just perceptible enough to justify what its name hints at and also remaining fresh, again in accordance to its name

while the first one is quite versatile for every day and work, the other three, perhaps the Fraicheur Cuir flanker to a lesser extent, are far more appropriate in formal/evening settings and only quite limited circumstances for work, unless with fewer sprays/applications and for date night, unless dating someone with whom there is not only a certain familiarity and openness about their fragrance tastes but also these very fragrance tastes are on the more classic, even powerhouse side
