Hermès Hermessence Iris Ukiyoe is a wonderful iris but unfortunately it probably would break your budget.

Yardley's Iris might work. I've never tried it, but some say it reminds them of Hiris.

I managed to get my bottle of Hiris at a great discount online wasn't looking for it at the time but a happy accident. Not sure but it was £40 if I remember, I know I bought Eau d'Hermes at around half price from a local department store about 2 years ago at the end of the sale when products really dropped in price.

So just watch online discount retailers like allbeauty etc they change what brands and discounts monthly.

Yardley Iris is uncannily similar to Hiris (I’ve owned and love both). Not a dead ringer but close enough. I don’t pick up any lavender in the Yardley at all. And it’s definitely budget-friendly.

Thank you..if I can find it maybe it is worth a try!As long as it does not have any sharp Lavender smell.

That’s funny, I tried Hermes Iris before my last trip to Greece ages ago! The paper note in it didn’t work for me. Please try / buy Yardley with caution. My recent purchase of Violet was unscented, tinted water!!!!!!! $20. USD wasn’t so big a deal, as it was a disappointment.

I would add Dior Homme to the suggestions. Definitely not expensive and it's enjoyed by both men and women alike.

Aha ! So I'm not the only person to have found the wet cardboard note in Hiris offputting.

Yes, incense+heliotrope, I won’t lie about liking or disliking a fragrance, even if my opinion goes against the ruling majority. In the case of Hermès Hiris, I was able to put my finger on the offending note or nuance. Sometimes, I can pick it out immediately, other times not. I think you stated it better: “wet cardboard”.

scentsamples.uk.com do various-sized samples of Hiris.

But EU delivery outside the UK is quite high ! (but then so is First In Fragrance from Germany to the UK)

Hmm..by the way..are there any other scents by Hermes that have that powdery note??
To my nose Hiris was all a very powdery soft note...but it was intense...maybe I am wrong??I have only smelt it on someone and she said Hermes..Hiris but maybe it was another perfume by Hermes?? Any ideas??

    Iris by Fragonard.

To be honest, you could find the Hiris at e-tailers for about $80.00 USD. I don't know if they are still doing this.

Sorry, came late to the party. You will find a perfectly acceptable alternative with Houbigant's Iris des Champs.
