    Default Aromatics Elixir vs. Cabocard

    You're thoughts!?
I have experience with AE, but not Cabochard Gres.

They are quite different from what I recall of both, though they share a number of elements.

Cabochard is a green floral leather, quite smooth in the base and reminiscent of the original Aramis, while Aromatics Elixir is a dry herbal feeling rosey-floral with a straight up mossy cyphre base. Much more soapy and austere.

Cabochard is extreme green leather chypre while Aromatics Elixir is a green rose chypre with some orris and oakmoss for a bit of soapiness.

The talk is about vintage Cabochard, because the latest iterations, at least the ones I know, are not worth it.

but it's as others said. Cabochard was a floral leather chypre, the mother of Aramis and Azuree, to which it bears resemblances. But while Aramis and Azuree are, so to speak, Americanized (bolder, brassier), Cabochard is more European (softer, more floral).
Aromatics Elixir is full of resins, spices, patch and what not, bolder and confident.

I actually dislike both of these scents. I find they both share an
element of harshness and lack beauty in the way they are constructed.
Cabochard is very butch and leathery whilst AE is full of herbal notes that jar
and scratch. Austere is a good word for it, LiveJazz.

I would only wear either of these if I wanted to kick some ass or repel an unwanted
    admirer!

Sorry to rain on your parade but that's just how I feel.

Not same. No desire to kick anybody’s ass. :-(

But I do want to sample Gres Cabochard.

I have some vintage and fairly old, if more recent ‘Cabochard’. The vintage parfum, when available is a delight if you like oak moss. Very earthy, snappy green leather scent. The more recent EDP I have (with a frosted glass bow) is also good but it is more sharp compared to the deep, mellow parfum.

‘Aromatics Elixir’ has never done it for me. There are a few wrong notes that really pop out. I suspect it is that particular type of rose and orris that sticks out and ruins it for me

kumquat, based on your tempting description, it sounds to me like vintage Gres Cabochard parfum is the way to go!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Indeed, if you like a moss-based vintage scent, ‘Cabochard’ is one of the best. It does stay pretty close to the skin- not a lot of projection but adding vintage EDP helps with silage. I sometimes wear both together. EDP first, then a bit of parfum to really make it sing.

The original parfum to look for is in a black & white striped box and has a gray velvet bow on the bottle. I used to run across these on EBay frequently. I always try for unopened bottles. They hold up well in storage but once opened you never know what condition it may be in.

Oh well, so much for that. Really, all I wanted was to sample the vintage parfum, but if that’s not possible, I understand, as these things are dicey. (I’m heavily focused on older vintage Guerlain.) Thank you, kumquat, for the helpful information!!!!
