Default What fragrance(s) did you never think you would like, but for whatever reason, you do?!

I'm always sampling fragrances. Most I order because I think they look interesting after reading about them on Basenotes, but many of them are free throw-ins after ordering something.

We all have expectations about fragrances, where we have preconceived notions about fragrances before we even smell them. What we expect might be due to the house, the name of the fragrance, the ingredients, other things you've read about the fragrance, or who knows what!

Many times, I find that I'm completely surprised by something after sampling it. I may not have expected to like it, didn't think it would be my style, and didn't really even WANT to like it, but then I'll find that for whatever reason, I DO like it and I can't stop thinking about it and looking for the best price online.

This most recently happened with Montale Orange Aoud. I knew nothing about it before sampling it and I didn't expect to like it because I typically don't like ouds/aouds, especially if they are really strong. But I found myself really liking this fragrance. I sampled it again last night just to make sure I like it, and yep, I DO! What a surprise!

Any fragrances you're surprised by and never expected (or even wanted) to like, much less buy?

Midnight In Paris EDT. Years ago, before I purchased a bottle, I kept hearing it was too powdery. I expected a powder bomb. Glad I was wrong about that gem.

A couple I immediately think of are: "Flowerbomb Bloom" Eau de Toilette by Viktor & Rolf and "Amo Ferragamo Flowerful" by Salvatore Ferragamo. In both cases mostly just because I really disliked the original version of each fragrance. But with both "Flowerbomb Bloom" and "Amo Ferragamo Flowerful" I smelled them and was immediately like, "oh, this is actually really nice!" And was genuinely surprised by how much I actually enjoyed them! XD
I was also really surprised at how much I like "Aura" by Thierry Mugler, again, because I mostly dislike a lot of the fragrances in that whole house/brand.
Another one is "Gucci Rush" for women, because, once again, I find I often dislike fragrances from Gucci. But I smelled that one and was immediately like, "oh! I would wear this actually!"
Also, honestly, "Liz Claiborne" by Liz Claiborne, that retro '80's scent in the colourful triangles! (That some people say look like tacky 1980s jewelry, lol.) I wasn't expecting to like that one at all before I tried it, and then recently I actually did try it, and I immediately thought, "that's actually a really nice perfume!" And I sort of wondered why you don't really see it in stores here in Canada, like, hardly ever!
And..finally, for now, an honourable mention to "Love's Baby Soft." Like seriously...just the idea of baby powder scented perfume seems horrendous to me! But, I swear, the first time I actually smelled "Love's Baby Soft" I was just immediately hooked! It's a really great scent, and i would recommend it highly to anyone!

Another one I just remembered that I feel I need to add is Chanel Chance Eau Tendre!
This one surprised me because I hate the original Chance by Chanel (again lol.) And..I hated some other versions of it that I'd smelled too.
I only just very recently tried "Eau Tendre" though, which is ridiculous because I just realized it was released in 2010! (lol, I thought it was recent!) I was really pleasantly surprised, and thought it was a very beautiful perfume actually! I wish I'd known about it earlier!

Original Aoud - thought it would be too harsh, but was just the opposite.

Chanel - Bleu de Chanel: First try was not impressed at all. A few years later, I tried it again and loved it.

Based on notes and the house, I didn't expect to like Roja Dove's UAE Aoud - but that was an instant love.

Chanel Antaeus. The opening is off-putting to me but once I’m past that phase it smells great!

Traversee du Bosphore. I really can’t stand the taste of loukhoum/Turkish delight, so I didn’t think I would enjoy the fragrance. I was happily wrong.
My only regrets in life are the people I haven't stood up for,

Wardasina....given the rest of the sospiro line up and heavy reliance on loud synthetics and that rose is a note that is hard to impress me with as I've got a few unbelievable rose frags already and been underwhelmed by so many others but loved it.

Guerlain Shalimar took a while for me to get used to. The trick was trying the lower concentration EdTs and L'Eau.

I never thought I'd love Bois des Iles Parfum based on my dislike of the old EdT, and even stronger dislike of the EdP, but the extrait is heaven in a bottle.

Chanel Egoiste, Antaeus, an Pour Monsieur. I first tried the latest formulations back in 2011-12 and recalled not liking them. Initially repulsed, I almost gave up on them. It wasn't until I sampled the vintage formulations of all three did I discover my appreciation for these classic Chanels.

Drakkar Noir. I purposely avoided it after it's heyday in the '80s and thought that there was no way that I'd be able to sniff it again without going into apoplexy, but I bought a bottle, and it's fun to wear again (in infrequent occurrences, of course). The newer formulation is certainly neutered as compared to the original, but I don't mind it.

Several oud fragrances- from mass market to designer and even some niche options did not expect to enjoy this much ultimately.

While not necessarily 100% against this particular note/ingredient, considered it too much of a fad to attract any serious perfumers/houses/otherwise fragrance manufacturing or distributing companies dwelling on and using this to ever be able to provide anything even remotely interesting behind a passing and underwhelming trend, yet ultimately was lucky to find several Middle Eastern houses as well as European designer/niche houses that managed to both spoil the regular, average customer with a quite diverse and permissive oud choice, along with consistent, fairly priced and decent performance quality standards.

Hear, hear. I'm fortunate to have a nearly-full bottle of the EdP. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

Generally, 'skanky' fragrances. I never thought, when starting out, that I would be into barnyard, fecal, civet'ed, animalic fragrances but I love them; oud oils which fit this description are a very welcome part of my collection.

I also didn't think I'd get into rose as much as I have, or sandalwood.

Creed Aventus, because the egotism and solipsism surrounding a vocal minority of it's fans runs antithetical to my values as a Human being, but after cutting through the psychobabble filth of those strange and obsessed few, the actual perfume itself is very worthy of the actual objective praise that it gets from critics and collectors outside the weird hivemind.

    Kouros.

Oh, how my eyes would roll at the hyperbolic praise I would see for this scent in the forums. Then there were the negative reviews. Urinal cakes? (And worse?) Between those two extremes, I was intrigued, but sure that Kouros would not be for me.

Long story short, after first picking up Kouros Fraicheur and loving that, I got a bottle of original Kouros dating to the end of the "metal shoulders" era. The scent didn't really grab me, and I had kind of reached a "been there, done that" with Kouros. Not terrible, but not for me. But then I got an early 80s bottle as part of a set purchased via auction, and I did a near 180°. And to think, there was a time when I wanted to dislike Kouros. It now sits atop the list of my Most Worn (All Time), and by a wide margin.

Exactly. I can't reach for a bottle without my hand passing a couple in this category.

Curiously, I cannot think of a single instance where I "unliked" a fragrance. Once I find they appeal to me, it seems permanent.

I have yet to give up on one. I may send it to the back of the rotation or may not even see it for a year, but experience tells me to just keep trying. I recently bought a bottle of Declaration d'Un Soir that has not yet worked for me, but I just know that I am missing something. I think that a good analogy is those magic eye pictures where it comes across as just a random pattern of colors, but if you stare at them and your eyes are relaxed and focused just right, you see an quasi 3-D image of a flying horse or something, and once you're in that zone you can even look away for a moment and still come back to it.
