Default 1/2 Gallon of Nina Ricci Farouche!!! What??!!

Hello, I’m wondering if anyone can help me solve this mystery. A friend of mine recently took ownership of a very old drugstore that came with new old stock of many perfumes and cosmetics. Knowing I’m a perfume nerd, he let me have some behind-the-counter items, including 3 Lanvin dummy factices and a HALF GALLON jug of ACTUAL Nina Ricci perfume!

(sorry for yelling-- just a leeeeetle excited)

Anyway, we think the jug was intended for filling customers’ refillable bottles of “Farouche”. Based on the store history and other display items, it seems likely it’s the original formula. It smells amazing, too!
The problem is I can’t find a single thing about this online. Does anyone have any info or ideas or know where I might find info about this?

I’m also wondering about the best way to preserve it. I don’t think it had ever been opened before we opened it. I have sealed it with parafilm and was planning to keep it in a dark closet. If anyone has any other recommendations, I’d love to hear them!

I’ve included a photo of the bottle/jug. I can add more if needed.

That should last you a good long time!

Some info about the scent - (1973) A soft crisp green floral aldehyde parfum created by Michel Hy with top notes of galbanum, mandarin and bergamot, heart notes of ylang-ylang, clary sage, cardamom, honeysuckle, Indian carnation and orange blossom, on base notes of oak moss, broom, sandalwood and orris, classified B5f.
Presented in a heart shaped bottle the centre of clear glass, the ‘wings’ frosted like the rounded stopper; designed by Marc Lalique and made by René Lalique et Cie., Utt # NR-108. Discontinued.

Wow. Every Basenoter's wet dream. And based on the notes Hednic posted, it sounds fantastic. Hope you'll give us a full report when you get around to trying it, and of any others you come across in the stash.

    Yes, it’s unbelievable!
Isn’t it weird I can’t find a single other bottle like this? That’s what’s really got me stumped. I can find photos of regular bottles for sale, but I can’t even find mention of anything like this. I’ve never even heard of a 1/2 gallon jug of perfume!
Maybe that was a normal thing? Does anyone know if this is how perfume companies commonly packaged refills for stores in the 1970s?

Thank you! Do you know when it was discontinued and if it was common for perfumes to be sent to stores in 1/2 gallon bottles? I haven’t been able to find that info.

Not sure it was definitively discontinued. Looks like it was re-introduced in 2006 in a pure parfum concentration:

I thought this online review of Farouche was quite colorful: “It’s very dated; cranky like it’s wearing polyester, and shy because it’s older than everyone else at the party and wants to go home; put comfy shoes on and be wild in the only way it knows how: dancing alone to Neil Diamond”. Needless to say, most available commentary is more promising than that. BTW/ reading up about Jacqueline Cochran (from the label) is interesting - an aviation pioneer who when into cosmetics.

So, you guys won’t beleive this... my friend just found another 1/2 gallon jug! It looks like label fell off at some point, but I can tell it’s a different scent. I’d say it must be another Nina Ricci because it’s the exact same type container, but I’m not sure how to identify the scent.
Any tips on how I might go about finding out?

try looking here. Same marks would indicate same perfumer to me. Maybe traceable to exact contents through glass jug markings.

I can’t find any difference at all between the bottle markings... bummer.
    Thank you, though!

I’m pretty new on here, so I don’t know, but I wonder if anyone here is specifically a Nina Ricci collector. Would that be a different forum? New thread? Maybe a NR aficionado might be able to identify it by smell.

How about initiating a sample pass from both half gallons among a dozen or so Basenoters who have good noses and experience with/own Nina Ricci scents? You could ask their opinion. Sounds like a fun mystery to be solved and I think the community would have high interest in the event.

That would make 20 3.3oz bottles, not much for a reseller.

Yes, I was thinking maybe I could do some swaps with some people who know vintage NR scents. I’m not sure how to find them.

I would be EXTREMELY interested to find out if the other enormous bottle contains Fille d'Eve!!!!

(But with my luck it'll be L'air du Temps.)

    Hahaha

Well, let me know which ones of you know your Nina Ricci and are interested in helping solve this mystery! I haven’t even done sample swaps before, so I’m a total newbie to all this business. Is it all private messaging from here or...?
Maybe it isn’t an issue in this community, but how do I ensure I’m not sending perfume to someone I won’t hear from again?
    Basically, how does this work?

I apologize if he’d questions are in the wrong forum.

Me too! Is that one that you own? Are you able to identify vintage NR scents by smell?
I’m not sure how many samples I’ll send out, but I am planning on getting a small sleuth group together from the community!

A sample pass, to my knowledge, is a single mailing of a sample(s) to an individual who then tries the scent(s), reports her or his impressions on a dedicated Basenotes Thread, and repackaging the remaining sample(s) sends the package on to the next name and address on the list included with th e mailing. Of course one can send multiple samples to multiple addresses at the same time if the initiator wishes to conduct the event that way.

That would be my plan. I would vet choices for expertise in Nina Ricci Farouche in particular and other Nina Ricci fragrances in general as your second jug is still an unknown.

I would suggest you post your sample pass thread and call for Nina Ricci specialists in the Female Fragrance Discussion forum rather than the Vintage Forum. You'll get more female fragrance enthusiasts seeing it that way.
