Default For Those Who Bought And Enjoyed The Original Angel Men....How Do You Feel About It Today??

Just curious to see if this one has stood the test of time. Up until the mid 00's it still had a massive following but the flankers seem to get more attention these day.

    Do you still enjoy it?

I actually disliked it back in the day but today I really enjoy it and am considering buying a new bottle.

    Thanks in advance.

I liked it and still would consider it one of the more interesting gourmands but it's just not a style I enjoy wearing much. Probably also didn't help that Angel/A*Men and similar Mugler scents seem to have been popular with oversprayers, even in summer.

I have an early bottle of this but because of its tenacity I almost never wear it except on some of the coldest days in winter when I'm outdoors and the crisp cold air gives a more muted projection. Scentwise it’s nice enough but just not my bag.

I never really liked the original A*Men. I did track down and purchase a few of the flankers when the A*Men craze was at it's height. I remember paying quite a bit for half a bottle of Pure Coffee...I have soured on gourmand fragrances over time and find them pretty much unwearable at this point. But, I did really enjoy Havane, Malt, and Coffee for a time.

Default Re: For Those Who Bought And Enjoyed The Original Angel Men....How Do You Feel About It Today??

It was my first signature scent, dating all the way back to high school in the late '90s, so it brings me back. Being that A*Men and Aventus are the only two in my wardrobe of almost 30 bottles that my wife actually likes on me, it still gets plenty of use.

I don't think it's particularly dated, unless men's gourmands are being perceived as dated nowadays, but I will say I don't care for the Angel Men to A*Men name change and simultaneous reformulation that happened that toned down the patchouli and overall quality (this stuff used to have such a niche-quality gourmand coffee/chocolate aroma). I suppose that's the natural marketing lifecycle of a fragrance - gradually cheapen the product as the years go on. I've bought a few vintage Angel Men bottles to re-capture that magic, but sadly the juice in them had turned a bit. That really sucks, considering just a month ago I bought a 1987 new old stock bottle of Drakkar Noir and it smelled perfect, but for some reason the late 90s/early 2000s bottles of Angel Men don't keep.

Also, I think the rubber flask is the worst sprayer in all of the fragrance world. The metal flasks were great, but the rubber flask makes the sprayer difficult to spray down with enough force, so unless I pretend like I'm in a hand squeezing contest every time, the sprayer will let out a half-assed squirt instead of a proper spray. The smaller size rubber flasks are easier for me to get my hand around the vertical height of the bottle and squeeze down better, so for that reason alone I won't be getting a large bottle of this.

Still, I enjoy this scent and probably always will - I've never cared for any of the flankers, and I think Thierry Mugler's really milked this whole line, which just turns me off further to the rest of the line. But here's a glass to Angel Men, its beautiful metal flask, and its continued application of being one of the only two scents my wife won't say "ewww, what are you wearing? It smells like baby powder" when I wear it.

I bought a bottle of Angel Men from Target dot com two years ago for $28 delivered. It was cheap enough so I pulled the trigger. I found this way too sweet for me and ended up giving it away last Christmas to my friend's young son.

I own just about all the flankers and the original. I generally prefer the flankers, namely Ultra Zest, Pure Havane and Kryptomint, above the original. I do get a hankering to wear the original, but just occasionally.

When I first smelled it, I was amazed that it was ever as popular as it was. Still am, I mean, patchouli birthday cake in a bottle? Really? I don't ever remember smelling it anywhere out in the wild to be honest, but those years I was hardly ever a bar or club guy.. (I do now own and enjoy Pure Coffee, same DNA just toned down a bit)

I still love this one, and to me it still outshines all the flankers. It's one of my most worn fragrances every year. When the temperatures get very cold here, I always reach for this one when I'll be outdoors. I haven't found another fragrance that I enjoy as much when temperatures are below freezing. I like most of the flankers, but this one has really stood up over the years for me.

I wore Amen for nearly 20 years. I had two disappointing customer services experiences, the first in the USA, the second in the UK. I wrote a letter to Mugler in Paris, they never replied. I don't buy anything from Mugler now, the smell brings back bad memories.

Used to rock the A*men, but not so much anymore. Still own a bottle but haven't reached for it in what feels like months. I do still enjoy Pure Havane and Pure Malt though.

This was the first scent to offend my nose back in ?2004? Fast forward, bought a bottle couple months ago. Really like it. It is only a 3 star frag for me, but it occupies a very specific niche in my wardrobe. Happy to have it.

I agree. I never used to but really like it today. It's presence is so obvious in the flankers. It's a very ostentatious fragrance but sometimes you just feel like a bit of indulgence!!

I actually disliked it back in the day but today I really enjoy it and am considering buying a new bottle.

    Thanks in advance.
I have a 1 oz A*Men with a serial code that is from 99. The fragrance is notably strong, very potent. Very noticeable tar accord, then dries down to a caramel like base that lasts for freakin' ever. I mean like 2 days on skin, and several weeks on clothes. I only have about half of this bottle left, so I rarely use it; usually only for comparisons or reference to original A*Men. It is so old that there are particles floating in it. I have been meaning to get a current bottle of A*Men so I can have it in my collection, and wear it more often. I have tried several samples of the current stuff, and I do admit it is much less potent, and the tar note is quite dialed down, if even prevalent at all.

Maybe your tastes have changed though, or your nose has become more refined as they say. For example, I used to hate Polo for Men. I thought it was disgusting, and didn't understand why anyone would wanna smell like that! It just smelled horrible to me. Now, I absolutely love it. Both vintage, and current.. well vintage more, it is much more smooth, and you can tell there is less use of chemicals.

I feel like the more frags I try, the more notes and compositions I am exposed to, the more I get a liking for different things. A lot of stuff used to be out of my comfort zone. I didn't try A*Men until maybe 2010 I wanna say. I wasn't too keen on it then. I thought it smelled feminine at one point, and sickly sweet at another. I think it's just one of those frags that really has to grow on you. Or as you suggest, after several reformulations, maybe it's just more mass appealing than ever now.

I agree that the original juice is not as potent but when something started as a 10 in the strength department being pegged back to say an 8 is not the end of the world and can almost be seen as an improvement. I think you have a problem when something starts as a 7 and then becomes a 5. If you get my point??

Anyway....I'm not sure if I enjoy Amen more now because of the reform or because my tastes have changed??

I have a tester of the original A Men and full bottles of Kryptomint, Pure Malt, and Pure Havane. My order of preference is the same. I am not sure where I would rank the original, but fears of it being reformulated to being weak are what have kept me from a full bottle purchase. Fears of discontinuation made me jump on the flankers I have. I do want a full bottle of the original though, as I enjoy it quite a bit.

My GF LOVES Kryptomint, but isn't a fan of the original, and seems dismissive of Pure Malt/Havane, with no strong feelings either way.
