    Default Earthiest patchouli

I adore patchouli, but I seem to not have much in my wardrobe. ATM, Coromandel is $240 CAD for the little bottle.

What else can I get? Nothing too masculine.

    Ideas?

I don't know about "earthiest", but the ones from Reminiscense (Patchouli, L'Incroyable, Elixir) all manage to have a not too masculine but realistic earthy patchouli going on. You can usually find them online at fairly low prices too, far below what their quality is. I especially like their original version of Patchouli but current is very good if a bit powdery.

I haven’t tried all the patchoulis but Frederic Malle Monsieur is one of the earthiest I’ve tried. Maybe also Zino Davidoff if you’re on a budget.

Patchouly Indonesiano by S.S. Farmacia Annunciata. Too bad the scent turned into mildew and more mildew on me. I like mildew as a facet of patchouli, not as its entirety. My favorite patch used to be by Oriza L. Legrand. I haven’t repurchased after discovering it was diluted. My favorite patch now is SMN Patchouly. This one smells exactly like the patch incense sticks I remember being burned and sold in small packs in some of the odd shops in the East Village way back when. (Splurging on much loved vinteez. No can do the SMN patch.)

I second the nomination of Santa Maria Novella Patchouli. I tested many at Scent Bar and it was by far the most earthy.

I have to mention Tauerville's Patch Flash. It's earthy, but also leathery, boozy, and dark. About as far away from Coromandel as you can get. I don't think it's what you are looking for, but if you're interested in patchouli, it's a must try.

I forgot how much I used to love this. I wonder if it smells the same?

Many thanks to all who answered, all have been added to my smell-list.

Nothing too masculine? Try Histoires de Parfums Noir Patchouli. It has a delightful touch of florals.

I've been searching to find a good patchouli fragrance recently - something that shines the spotlight on the Patchouli without too much else blended in.
    My favourites so far are

Patchouli -Oud - Affinessence : Wonderful earthy Patchouli with a lovely sour note, with a faintly woody base
Mitti - Arte Profumi : Earthy and slightly bitter patchouli. Also a touch of sourness, but with an ambery base.
Patchouly - Profumum Roma : Very earthy. Not as singular as the first two. Has an amber base, and a sweetness from the incense that gradually builds
Psychedelique - Jovoy : Most blended of the 4, so the patchouli doesn't stand out as much. Ambery with a light sweetness from Vanilla. Nice but the patchouli didn't stand out enough for me.

    Santa Maria Novella Patchouli
    Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli
    Patchouli Nobile by Nobile 1492

...are probably my favourite 'straight' patchoulis. The Viloresi is the most severe and uncompromisiing, the Nobile is probably the most accessible.

If you like Coromandel then try Prada Amber (the women's one). It came before the Chanel and it's definitely in the same groove, with a very healthy dose of patchouli.

Apart from the great options already mentioned, perhaps also to a certain extent G-Man by Gainsboro, most of the Marbert masculines, especially the powerhouse ones first released in the 80s (though their current formulation will do), Prince Classic EDT, vintage Givenchy Gentleman, worlds apart from its current version, Caractere by Daniel Hechter, among the often inexpensive options, perhaps apart from vintage Givenchy Gentleman

In my experience with patchoulis, Santa Maria Novella's most closely resembles a freshly dug pit of earth and roots.

I remember being somewhere in the middle of California where I stumbled upon a clothing store that specializes in authentic Victorian attire. My eyeballs popped out of my skull, while my fingers did their dirty work on the garments. I exchanged a brief word with the owner who recognized me as a regular customer at NYC’s Reminiscence, her old workplace. She was so kind as to gift me a black lace capelet. I remember the smell of the store, and it is SMN Patchouli, with its slight ambery base. The capelet smelled of this.

    Thanks again everyone.

    1. I did not care for Histoire des Parfum's patchouli - it smelled great at first, then turned into something else.
    2. SMN Patchouli is something I've not tried in a long time, I'll have to look out for this one (seems like their distribution has diminished)
    3. Prada's amber-patchouli thing is nice, but HEAVY.
    4. I used to own Dior's Patchouli Imperial, but it had a weird fresh note that really bothered me.

Going to look for Patchouli Nobile and Ramon Monagle.

For the 'not too masculine' patcholi's - I agree with the recommendations of Patcholi Nobile. A great scent.

Also suggest trying Micallef's Patcholi - last a long time on me and always makes me smile.

Edit: Wanted to add Parfumerie Generale's Intrigant Patchouli - another not too masculine patchouli that I love - though Coromandel is maybe my fav.

Specifying vintage for the Etro is necessary. Current edt is fairly light and non-earthy. The earlier version from the 90s was much more robust. I have no idea what the Etro Patchouly edp released in 2016 actually smells like, though it's described as a 'woody oriental'.

The Santa Maria Novella of any time is excellent.
