My suggestion is Caron Pour Un Homme Sport, $30 from the online discounters.

I second versace eau fraiche, light enough for a new fragrance wearer, universal mass appeal, hard to overspray.

Lots of good suggestions here. I don't know what your budget is, but please don't think that more expensive always means better. There are a ton of very good fragrances out there at a reasonable price point. Most people here have a collection of scents at all price points.

Some I would recommend at the $15-$30 range that are excellent include the following for summer:

Moschino Uomo: Very versatile citrus scent, suitable for daily wear as well as more formal occasions. A lot of summer scents can smell overly casual if you are going out to a nice restaurant or something, but this one works anywhere. Under $20 pretty much anywhere.
New York for Gentlemen, Brooks Brothers: Nice casual scent, currently all over TJ Maxx for $15.
Nautica Voyage: Easy to like fresh scent, constantly in TJ Maxx for $20.
L'Eau Bleue d'Issey Eau Fraîche: I really like this one a lot for summer, it has a lot of character and smells great. In TJ Maxx and online for about $25.

For your "fall leaves, wet forest" category, some suggestions include:
Encre Noir by Lalique: Imagine sitting in a damp forest, writing in a journal with an old fashioned fountain pen. Under $30 anywhere online.
Burberry London: A classic fall/winter scent, warm and cozy. Under $30 all over the place.
John Vavatos Vintage: A spicy, leathery scent with touches of sweetness. Also under $30.

Many of these are available thru Fragrancenet online. If you checkout with Google Express you will automatically get 37% off, instead of the 30% they advertise on their site, along with faster/free shipping.

Definitely a safe suggestion but he has to really like lemon and he has to appreciate fleeting fragrances that do not outstay their welcome. This one's longevity makes a Mayfly seem like an Elephant.

    I get hours of longevity.

Taking into account his line of work and being familiar with it...

    -Chanel platinum egoiste
    -Terre De Hermès Eau Fraiche
    -Dior Eau Suavage edt
    -Hermès Eau Orange verte

Those are all masculine & refreshing citrus fragrances that would be great for work/hanging with the guys. For what you want him to wear with you, I’d let your nose be the judge & pick something YOU like.

All those should be available at your local Sephora.

I concur that these could work well for the man who likes acquatic, fresh type scents with some citruses. It's why I included the Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo line in my suggestions. Those scents would work really well around the beach IMO.

I'd say the following would be easy to find at both Macy's & Sephora, and are also modern, pleasant, easy going fragrances IMO:

    Invictus
    1 Million (& flankers)
    Sauvage EDP
    Bleu De Chanel
    Chanel Allure Homme Sport
    Versace Pour Homme
    Acqua Di Gio Absolu
Just to give more detail to these picks:

I figure you may have smelled one of the first 3 on somebody else catching a whiff. All of those seem to be scents that Women love.

Invictus seems to fill the Aquatic area of those, meanwhile the 1 Millions I see as more adult versions of Axe, in the best way possible.

The 2 Chanel's I included are both the most modern, casual, etc. from Chanel that I've tried. I'd include these even if you didn't mention you like Chanel, they are both good.

The Versace Pour Homme is similar to Allure Homme Sport, maybe a little more airy, not as perfumey. Might be right in the area.

AdG Absolu is a flanker of Acqua Di Gio, that's considerably different yet sort of in the area of Acqua Di Gio and the water vibe your looking for.

All of these are pretty easy to find, hopefully you'll get what your looking for with any of the great recommendations in this thread.

I'd suggest Bleu de Chanel Parfum. My wife likes fragrances like the few you mentioned and this one drives her crazy. It's easy to like, laid back and would probably fit wearing a t-shirt, shorts and sandals as much as it would dressed up for an evening out or special occasion. Additionally, you can find it at the department stores you mentioned for testing.

In no certain order below are my suggestions. I have tried some I tried a lot of different niche and designer scents and honestly the niche ones were obviously too sophisticated for me I guess.
    ADG Profumo
Bleu de Chanel EDP or Parfum either or
    Chanel Platinum Egoiste
    Prada Luna Rossa Carbon

+1 on the bleu de Chanel recommendations , since he seems to like some darker scents on you try the edp or Parfum versions.

I'm seeing a lot of people suggesting old school stuff or niche off the top of their head but here is a beach guy who loves the outdoors and right now loves Axe. I think people are ramping him up into areas he doesn't need to be in.

    Go simple and popular

Tommy Bahama has a line of fresh and beach type scents that are nice and not over the top. I enjoy Maritime...tropical Fierce and Island Life...lime and tropical.

If you are looking at your Macys and Sephora they should have Bleu de Chanel EDT or EDP. I also think Acqua di Gio Profumo would work and Chanel Allure Homme Sport. If they have it the Dior Homme Sport would be nice too. Even Versace Man Eau Fraiche

Just some quick ideas. There are many designers now that have blue/aqua/beach type feels to them that are nice for all occasions.
