Default The inevitable: I need a few fragrances for the boyfriend

    Hey guys!

Well after a few months of exploring for myself, of course I need to try and rope my s.o. into this as well. Or at least help him find a few frags he and I both enjoy... There is a small-ish mall in our town with a Macy's and Sephora, but they're both on the small side, and have pretty limited selections compared to larger cities. And my bf hates shopping... So what I'm hoping to do is get some suggestions of fragrances and/or houses we might enjoy, order him a few sample or discovery sets, and have fun testing them together at home.

He's an EMT/ocean lifeguard instructor, prefers casual dress, competitive swimmer for years, loves snorkeling, diving, and anything water/beach related. Favorite smells are chlorinated water, fall leaves, wet forest, and salt water. He currently uses Axe Phoenix deodorant, ugghhh, and has been for years. Time for something new! I don't know anything at all about male fragrances, except there are one or two notes in them that when I catch a whiff of them my knees go weak and eyes bug out of my head with big hearts all cartoon-style. What ARE those?? I know that wasn't descriptive at all. >.< Anyway. I love Chanel, but I'm not sure my bf is a Chanel guy; he needs something a with a funkier, more laid-back and modern style. I used to love Acqua di Gio years ago, but an ex wore it all the time, so I'd like to stay away from that. Oh, and his favorites of what I wear are YSL Black Opium and Nuit Blanche, Taylor Swift Incredible Things, Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil, and Vera Wang Princess (because I wore it for sooo long!).

Any ideas or advice you all have on good starting places for him would so very appreciated! Thank you, thank you, as always..

Thatís a nice thought and going with samples that he can try out is an excellent idea. It sounds like he may like a salty aquatic like Creed Erolfa. You could also try creed millesime imperial.

The note you like in most colognes is ISO-E super and/or Ambroxan.

This is hard because, on the one hand, it seems a light casual style is more fitting for his style and, on the other hand, the scents he likes on you are a plusher style. There are plenty of options in both camps, "freshies" and ambrox-bombs, but when I think of a hypothetical midpoint between those two I come up with things like the masculines of Hanae Mori, vintage Minotaure, Salvatore Ferragamo pour Homme, Rochas Man ...

I love the classics, so Hermes Equipage and Bel Ami, Dior Fahrenheit and Homme, and there are a bunch from Chanel he would probably like, such as Allure Homme Edition Blanche, Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme, Platinum Egoiste, Egoiste, Bleu de Chanel edt or parfum, Antaeus, and Pour Monsieur edp.

Sephora should let you have a few free samples to try if you ask. Macy's might also, but you can always spray some on the test strips they have and write the name of the cologne on them.

I'd say the following would be easy to find at both Macy's & Sephora, and are also modern, pleasant, easy going fragrances IMO:

    Invictus
    1 Million (& flankers)
    Sauvage EDP
    Bleu De Chanel
    Chanel Allure Homme Sport
    Versace Pour Homme
    Acqua Di Gio Absolu

    My recommendation,

First, since he doesn't like to shop, go and obtain samples of the fragrances on your own. Make sure the samples are clearly labeled and kept separated from each other so that they cannot cross-contaminate on each other. When you obtain fragrances, ask the store associate if you can take a handful of those paper testers home with you. (Those long tester cards that they provide for you to spray fragrances on. You will need these.)

Once you have obtained the samples and have kept them sterile from any other scents, here are your next instructions:

    1. Go into a different room than the room your boyfriend will smell these in. Put on rubber kitchen gloves and carefully spray each tester card and be sure to carefully avoid spraying the fingers of your gloves. If you suspect you accidentally caught your glove, then change gloves before spraying the next tester card in order to avoid cross contamination. These initial cards must sit on a table for at least 20 minutes to dry down. Write a number on each strip and then on a separate piece of paper, which only you can see, write the corresponding fragrance name next to each number so that you know which one it is. All your boyfriend will see is the number. This is done to avoid any bias and so that only his nose will determine what he picks.

    2. After 20 minutes, get your boyfriend to sit in the testing room separate from where you sprayed the fragrances. Then quickly spray a new set of tester cards. Again, keep them separate. These cards are for your boyfriend to smell the opening. Let these air out for at least 3 minutes, preferably around 5 minutes. Same thing. Write the numbers on the strips.

    3. Let your boyfriend FIRST smell the 20 minute dry down as these will be less potent and will not knock out his sense of smell yet. Tell him to only handle each one separately so they don't contaminate each other. Let him smell each one as long as he wants.

    4. Let him smell the more recently sprayed opening of each fragrance. This step could impair his sense of smell, so that's why this one is done last.

    5. Have him pick his favorite top 3.

    6. Have him test each of the favorites on a different day on his skin for a full wearing. Skin can change the way a scent is perceived and this final step is critical in choosing.

That's pretty much it. That is how I developed a strategy to audition multiple fragrances for a person in a single sitting.

My recommendation is to try designer scents as they are the most mass-appealing and a good start. If you are going to try any expensive niche brands straight away, then Creed and Parfums de Marly are two very nose-friendly niche brands.

    Designers:
    Calvin Klein - Escape
    Nautica Voyage
Acqua di Parma - Blu Mediterraneo line - Fico di Amalfi
Acqua di Parma - Blu Mediterraneo line - Arancia di Capri
Acqua di Parma - Blu Mediterraneo line - Cedro di Taormina
    Tommy Hilfiger Cologne

    Niche:
Xerxoff - Nio from the Shooting Stars Collection
    Creed - Millesime Imperial
    Creed - Silver Mountain Water
    Creed - Green Irish Tweed
    Parfums de Marly - Galloway
    Parfums de Marly - Percival

When you see what the niche fragrances cost, even at discounted prices, don't freak out, you've been warned, but you can order small samples of these online if you cannot find them locally. I have provided clickable links to on this for each fragrance where you can order a sample. All of these could suit someone who likes aquatics or fresh scents. This is just off the top of my head. I can't find a link to obtain a sample of Tommy Hilfiger Cologne, but most malls and designer stores have this fragrance available to sample and you could likely get a sample of it easily. Those are just off the top of my head. The other suggestions you get in this thread could very well be at the website where most of my links go. It might take a little money and effort, but when you find a scent that is really enjoyed it is well worth the effort.

    Welcome!

I'm going to go a different route with my advice, but I hope it's helpful.

Go to the grocery store or amazon, etc, and buy tiny ziplock bags. The kind I bought were called Snack Bags. I'm talking about the ones too small for sandwiches. TINY!

Go to places like Sephora or Nordstrom and bring a pen. Smell lots of men's fragrances (unisex stuff too!). Whenever you find one you'd like to smell on your boyfriend, jot down the name on the strip of paper you sprayed and pop it in one of those little baggies. Only put one piece of paper in a baggie, obviously, because the point is to be able to smell the ones you're considering again later when you get home. Have your boyfriend smell them too... but the real goal here is for you to narrow down the options to stuff you know you'd love so it'll be easier for him to pick a winner.

    Here are a few recommendations:

    YSL L'homme
    Prada L'Homme
Dior Homme Sport or Dior Homme Cologne
    Gucci Pour Homme II

Hhhmmmm... As I type this, I realize I'd end up giving you a long list, but what you really should do is go to a store and start figuring out what appeals to you an what you think you'd enjoy on him.

If you're at a Sephora that carries Atelier Cologne, I'd highly recommend you check out their line. Bergamote Soleil & Grand Neroli could be winners.

    Good luck! And have fun!

Macys and Sephora, huh? Let's see...

For funky, maybe Replica Jazz Club, Gucci Guilty Absolute, or Tom Ford Ombre Leather.

For non-funky, D&G The One, Azzaro Wanted, Azzaro Wanted by Night, La Nuit de L'Homme, Armani Stronger with You, or YSL Y (EDP).

Two fragrances that don't smell like typical cologne, are very mass appealing and safe, but also aren't likely to be attractive or masculine to you are Dior Homme Cologne and Replica By the Fireplace.

Millesime Imperial and EROLFA are great choice from Creed. From the same house I recommend Green Irish Tweed.

I will third the Set Marin suggestion.
It's Nautical without screaming "I am trying my best to smell like the oceans".
It's subtle but in a commanding way. It is inoffensive but does not lack character.
Suitable for daily wear (even at the gym), or a night out.
Someone here is selling a partial bottle at a good price but may be good to smell it first.
Will not be available at Macys or Sephora. It's tres niche.

Can't go wrong with something citrus, especilly grapefruit. I'd suggest:
Cartier Declration L'eau (quite under-rated here)
Hermes Concenree pamplemousse Rose (he at least seems to enjoy your Hermes and my go with the theme)
Hermes - TDH or the Eau Tre Fresh variant,

Bahaha, I sure hope it doesn't come to that!

Thank you all SO MUCH for the amazing recommendations!! As always, this group has really come through. I'm very intrigued by this Sel Marin, definitely will try that one, as well as many of these other suggestions! Not sure about the Creed though -- I have yet to try any out myself because I'm afraid I won't settle for anything else afterwards haha. And my boyfriend has been doing a little balking at the $200 price tags of a few of my bottles, so he probably won't want something more expensive for himself, at least not to wear frequently. Still might have to order a sample set though...

Thank you L'Homme Blanc Individuel and tspencer for the detailed ideas of how to sample the fragrances, those are great. And thanks papillo for telling what those notes are! Will let you all know how it goes... <3

I think Montblanc Legend would be a good shoe-in for somebody who likes the rounded fruity casual fougŤre style like your BF seems to enjoy with his choice of Axe.

For Chanel, definitely Bleu de Chanel (2010), and also look into Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue (2017). A lot of our "tastemakers" here won't recommend that latter one because it's blatantly a "pop tune" in olfactive terms, but I feel it is also your BF's vibe. Since he likes some of your plusher scents, I'd also recommend Chanel Allure Homme (1999) for a nice sweet sandalwood semi-oriental he will dig for evening wear (and you'll dig too), plus Dior Homme Cologne (2014) and Calvin Klein Reveal Men (2014) for something with more outdoorsy flexibility. If the BF wants to smell like the ocean, Versace Man Eau Fr‚iche (2006) is a great alternative to Acqua di GiÚ Pour Homme, as is the tried-but-true L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake (1994).

Bvlgari Aqva and Kenzo Pour Homme the original.

Read through your description of bf and see the mention of forest and leaves and think these would be good. Your ex wore AdG along with millions of other men and my personal opinion is it's time to retire that scent. If you haven't smelled my recos I bet you will both enjoy the experience.

I wouldn't hesitate from exploring the men's Chanel line. Bleu, Allure, Allure Homme Sport, AHS Eau Extreme; these are all very versatile, and the only thing that will make them 'serious' is what he chooses to wear on the day. Any of them will bury a task in jeans and a t-shirt, or a 3-piece suit, no contest!

I'm currently really enjoying Mancera Cedrat Boise and Bond no 9 Scent of Peace for him with the weather transitioning into 70+. Also, there are numerous Facebook groups with reputable sellers who sell/swap niche as well as designer fragrance partial bottles, decants, or full bottles, and at unbeatable prices, should you decide to stray away from the designer side.

Since he's used to wear Axe, the suggestions for $200-$300 perfumes seem rather pointless and misguided here.

Start off easy, go to a Sephora or equivalent and try stuff like Acqua di Gio or Bulgari Aqua and see if he actually likes them, or something similar. You won't be spending a lot and he might even wear it on a daily basis.
