Regardless of what you make of it, Voyageur has virtually nothing in common with the original Hommage and feels more related to Encre Noire.

Tobacco Vanille, Noir de Noir, and the other original lineup have been watered down so much, I wonder why they're still in production? Some of them should've been retired if the quality couldn't be reached.

I gave A*Men another try on Saturday, and my lack of enjoyment was palpable (had to scrub it). Truly a headache in a bottle for me.

Still sold because they still sell. And that's the bottom line for perfumery.

My 2016 bottle of Noir de Noir is strong as hell and smells fantastic.

But the truffle note is toned way down. The colour is also noticeably different.

Portrait of a Lady. I absolutely loved it when I first smelled it, but now I just feel suffocated by the enormous woody amber base that sucks all the air out of the room.

Franck Boclet's Tobacco. Just testing from a sample, but this is embarrassingly bad. Defitnitely in Tobacco Vanille territory, in other words, low on tobacco and high on candle-like smell. But it's like a candle on steroids because this stuff is potent! I can't believe so many people like and recommend this. I also tried the house's Leather. Not bad, but nothing special and much weaker than Tobacco.

Black Rose Lomani, though that was a few days ago; I recognized that there's ambroxan after a few hours. Not sure if that makes it unwearable for me, but I'll have to be in the mood the next time I spray some on.

If you like 2016 then you will love 2011 even more, that's something I own. The earlier bottles will amaze you if you haven't tried them already. There's a day and night difference between what was then and what is now.

As of now, my favorite tobacco heavy fragrances are Baque (Slumberhouse), Journey Man (Amouage), and Cuir Cuba Intense (Nicolai.)

    Thanks!

I have long been on the search for the "perfect" tobacco fragrance (deep, smoky, not too sugary, with a dominant cigar tobacco accord; most fragrances seem to be afraid to really push the tobacco and end up submerging it in vanilla or some other more palatable note).

The Nicolai is on my to-try list (as is the Boclet you hate so much).

I (maybe unfairly) wrote off the Amouage because my experiences with that house have tended to result in headaches. Journey Man also doesn't sound quite as tobacco-forward as I'd like.

I know nothing about the Slumberhouse offering.

    Eternity Air.
Seems a Sauvage type dupe, sense original Eternity way far down about 7hrs later when it's run out off puff. I stay away from this type of modern freshie, not often I want to scrub off something. This unfortunately is one such case!
I now know why it was thrown in as a freebie.

PdM Layton. Had a sample a while, didn't 'get' it. Thought I'd try wearing it. No, no, no. Loud, cloying, artificial, and tried to wash it off. I don't get it.

(Had a better experience a few days with Carlisle, but then after an hour or so it started to smell animalic in a shitty way, so that sample is another no no. I've got one other sample here, Layton Exclusif, will try that, but I don't really get this house, it's all so artificial).

Not enjoying anything. My allergies have kicked in and even the slightest whiff of scent, even from hand wash and soap, floods my face with my eyes watering and nose running. The antihistamines do nothing.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

Acqua di Parma Fico di Amalfi

I think AdP is a fairly mediocre house overall and this scent serves as a fair example as to why.

If you're going to build something with a delicate composition, you have to make sure the individual components have the definition and clarity to build a conversation between them. This is just a fuzzy, mildly pleasant nothing where you occasionally get hints of something interesting but nothing comes out enough to register. Maybe with a higher balance of naturals to synthetics this would click, but as it stands it falls short of the mark.

But, yes, my wife is very smart and very creative. The Tobacco Vanille/Jacomo de Jacomo combination was so excellent (like a very luxurious and spicy riff on a vanilla-flavored clove cigarette) that I'm tempted to replace my 4 ml TV samples just so I can keep wearing it.
Good call and nice description. I was wondering if it might be a good idea to layer Eau Sauvage EDT with the vintage, to have the best of both worlds ?

    Serge Lutens Chergui.

This is a good example of why you don't really know a fragrance until you spend time with it. I thought it was love at first sniff, but this is so sweet and linear that, when wearing it for an extended period, it becomes cloying and tiresome. There's some nice stuff in there, but the sugar content is just too high.
