What was/is the most mysterious fragrance you have ever smelled, good or bad, and your thoughts?

Cedre Du Liban but in a very good way - enticing yet halting.

I'd have to think about this, because there are oddball fragrances I've tried that I subsequently put aside and haven't thought much about since, but of stuff I've actually *liked* Lalique Encre Noire and Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain (or its slightly superior, but less-discussed sibling, Au Coeur du Desert) are up there.

What do you mean by "halting"? Would you please elaborate a bit.

I've heard quite a bit about the Encre Noire.

It's fascinating! I never quite feel like I've wrapped my mind around it. It's more defiantly "niche" than most "niche" releases.

And Tauer's L'Air du Desert Marocain and/or Au Coeur du Desert are must-sample fragrances, art-in-a-bottle releases that sit heavy but are just gorgeously rendered smellscapes that I always find intoxicating. I prefer Au Coeur du Desert just because it's *slightly* more wearable, but they're built around the same fragrance DNA.

It brings to mind kind of an undulating cosmic transparency. If the visual phenomenon of heat wave mirages in the distance had a scent I imagine this is how it would smell.

Interesting about the Desert Marocain. It sounds like an acquired taste.

It was love at first sniff for me, actually!

But it's a very unusual creation, to be sure, and it's so powerfully smoky that I see why folks can find it a bit oppressive (you'd wanna go light on the trigger on this one if you try it). I love its dry, smoky, spicy aura, but I'd never spray it around my chest or neck. It's wrists-only.

S-ex by S-Perfume (pronounced Essex, apparently). Strawberry covered fake-leather, also oceanic somehow. So weird, but brilliant.

I tend to agree with L'Air du Desert Marocain as well.

I have always said that I can't imagine Tauer actually INTENDED to make a fragrance like LDDM. I just don't see how it would be possible to conceive of such a smell. I'd love to know how he came up with it, but I think it's most likely that he was experimenting and simply stumbled upon it.

But whenever threads like most "mysterious" or "unusual" fragrances come up, I always think of LDDM first. It's such an indescribable smell.

The most mysterious fragrances that I 'like' so far that I've smelled are a few of the Clive Christian "Addictives". Specifically Psychedelic. It's definitely a scent of aroma-chemicals that were created to be completely unlike any smells I would equate comparatively to real scents. It's like the fragrance is a mixture of 'fantasy' notes. Really different. I didn't like most of them, but Psychedelic is really good and Hypnotic is 'pretty' good. I have put Psychedelic on my 'future buy' list.

Man, I can only imagine the price tag on a Clive Christian "Addictive"

Lots of great ideas in this thread, giving me a lot of inspiration for sample hunting. I do love dark, damp, cavernous/coniferous foresty scents. Encre Noire definitely falls in that camp for me. Maybe also Tom Ford's Vert d'Encens. Reminds me of a Pagan ritual site deep in a forest, full of incantatory incense.

Can't remember the name but it was sold in Bloom Perfumery London, black bottle with a red 'x'. Nasty but mysterious.
