Default Bois du Portugal or Divorce?

My wife gave me the ultimatum last night. Her, or BdP by Creed. Hmmmmmmmm

Bois du Portugal: Smells amazing. Expensive, but a one-time cost that lasts a long time due to strong projection. Always uplifting. One of the best frags in existence. Not in love with the opening but the drydown is always sublime.

Wife: Smells pretty good too usually. Expensive, and continually expensive. Can be uplifting, can be a downer. Opening can be harsh. Drydown can also be pretty harsh in my experience, or can be warm and inviting, you never know which.

    What do I go with????

Marriage of course, but doesn't mean you can't enjoy the fragrance when you're on a trip or to yourself.

A good wife improves with age faster than BdP, and keeps improving, whereas BdP plateaus. I hardly touch BdP these days, but wife is still my go-to spray.

Also, a new BdP will set you back a few hundred. A new wife - don't even think about it - the sticker shock is massive! Stick with wife!

On me, BDP was a bit lame - with none of the projection you describe.

Marriage is all about give and take, and compromise - though not caving in to unreasonable demands.
I suggest that you suggest only wearing BDP for work, when she won't be around.

It's sort of like when my wife wanted Chanel No.5 - I said I'd only get it for her on condition she never wear it around me.
Similarly, I've acceded to her request that I don't wear Yatagan or Versace Black Jeans around her.

If there are no children in play then BdP wins outright.

If otherwise, stay and wear New-York or Heritage as a substitute. (Tell her she cannot nix *everything* you want to wear!)

Have you tried Royal Oud? I feel like it's a modern spin on the woody aspects of Bois Du Portugal. BdP is fantastic... but I don't enjoy wearing it. It smells too vintage for my tastes.

Royal Oud is fantastic too. It's my favorite Creed, and the fact that it's been a major compliment getter for me is a really nice bonus.

As a side note: I realize the poll is meant in jest, so no worries... but I'd feel bad for anyone who actually thinks that way. If fragrance takes over one's life to the point that they'd choose a scent over a relationship... wow. That's a very unhealthy addiction.

I voted for BdP, but if you go the other way just make sure you make her give up something (anything) that she loves. Just to be fair. People love fairness.

A spouse who is so picky as to dictate which fragrances you may wear? No thank you. But that's her choice. Wear what you like but remain otherwise a good spouse. If your spouse decides to leave you over this, she is the petty one, not you.

My wife really liked BDP about 20 years ago, but when I had it a couple of years ago, she thought it smelled too "old mannish" for me. So for my wife's tastes, the time of BDP has passed.

My wife likes 99% of my scents, so no big loss.

Seems like a cunning trap to get you to file for divorce. When the judge hears your reasons, he laughs out loud, and awards her everything, and further damages for mental cruelty. And recommends you seek immediate treatment for your addiction.

Best to set your own timebomb trap for her, lest you end up homeless and out on the street.

You can always see if you can get away with something in a similar vein, like New York Intense or Lalique Pour Homme Lion EDP (I enjoy wearing the Lalique more than I enjoy wearing BdP, to be honest).

But otherwise I follow a strict relationships-are-more-important-than-things rule and recommend others do the same.

As expected almost every answer to my question has been truly excellent. Thank you guys for brightening my morning with funny, snide, smart and rational replies. Surprisingly (or perhaps not?) in the poll, BdP is winning 15-11!

This is an excellent point I did not take into consideration. Plus the cost of the divorce!

No children in the equation, and not in a community property state, but there is shared equity in a house we jointly own.

Royal Oud is my favorite fragrance, period. Luckily she tolerates that or this might be a serious question.. I do love Bois du Portugal too, for different reasons, but not as much as R.O.

Thats fair. Although I think actually posting pictures of her might cross some imaginary line, I'll try to draw you a mental image. Shes 36, about 5'2" and weighs maybe 115 lbs. Fantastic a$$ and legs that wont quit. Dirty blond/hazel eyes. Celebrity comparison is Heather Graham. She is objectively an attractive woman.

I didnt quote it but I like the reply to make her give up something she loves - its all about fairness!
