    Default Parfums de Marly Suggestions

I am looking to buy a couple PdM colognes and am looking for a second recommendation. I am getting Carlisle then something else, I was thinking Percival or Layton.

I'm sampling Shagya today. It is quite nice.

You can't go wrong with Layton, theres a reason its such a popular scent. My personal favorite is Herod, but thats because I love tobacco-based frags

My sour recommendation is to buy something far better at half the cost.

I came to say something similar about them being overpriced for what they are, but then I saw that Layton, which is $295 for 125mls on both LuckyScent and Marly's own website, is for sale at WalMart for $145. So I guess they're not quite the exclusive luxe brand I had thought.

Still don't much care for their scents though.

Layton is my favorite from PdM. Seems to appeal to the young ladies as well.

Either one would be fine IMO.

I bought a 125ml brand new bottle of herod for 135 so it isn't like you cannot find these at a good deal like any other mainstream niche out there

I paid $140 for 125ml Herod and I think like $170 for Layton, so yeah, in my opinon, Parfums de Marly offer pretty good value for the money

Layton is an amped-up Pasha de Cartier. Just spray more of the Cartier.

Mr Zealot Crusader, you are hands down my favorite fragrance reviewer here. Maybe the best reviewer of fragrance, PERIOD. I have the utmost respect for you.

That being said. I have to respectfully - and strongly - disagree with your sentiment that Layton is an "amped-up Pasha". I blind-bought Pasha in no small part because of you voicing this sentiment in your Layton review. And now that I have both (and I'm wearing Layton and just sprayed Pasha on cardboard to refresh my memory) I can safely say; these fragrances smell almost NOTHING like each other to my nose.

Layton: Vanilla, tart apple, sweet/spicy Cardamom. I'm not a fragrance reviewer, just a Joe Six Pack and those are main the notes I get from Layton.
Pasha: MINT (and then some more mint) along with Oak Moss and maybe some Anise/spices in there. Pasha has NO Vanilla, NO apple and NO cardamom. In addition, Layton has no Mint and no Oakmoss!

Ok, there are some *minor* similarities down deep, they both have some detectable lavender and sandalwood in there, but Layton is mostly the 3 notes I listed while Pasha contains none of the notes that backbone Layton, and vice versa.

In addition, to me, Pasha smells dated, boring, stodgy. If I wanted to smell like Drakkar, I'd wear Drakkar. Or safari... 1993 called, they want their fragrance back! Layton on the other hand smells fresh, modern, fun. My wife's (equally untrained) nose agrees. When I came down wearing Pasha, she was like ugh are you wearing Drakkar?? while making a decidedly disapproving face. When I came down wearing Layton, she was like MMMMMMM I like that one!

To my nose these are distant, 3rd cousins twice removed if there is any relation at all. Definitely not interchangeable. But I'm happy to swap my 99% full bottle of Pasha for your Layton if you'd like!

I’ve got samples of the three you mentioned. I like Carlisle and you’ve already decided on that one. Between Layton and Percival, I would pick Percival. I haven’t deemed any of the line full bottle worthy. I have a 10ml decant of Herod because I do like that tobacco fragrance.

I ordered Carlisle and ordered a masculine sample set from PdM to get to try Layton, Galloway, Herod, Pegasus, and Percival. So I figure that'll be a good set to choose from.

Samples haven't got here yet, but I'm wondering if I should go for Percival over Layton? I hear Layton is similar to Carlisle.

I'd go for Layton. GORGEOUS scent. My wife and I enjoyed that one. My 16 year old son now has it and loves it.

Carlisle is alright although it has a slightly animalic shitty note under it as it dries down which can be offputting, On the plus side, it's not as in your face as Layton. Layton is far too annoying, it's a synthetic scent that screams out loud out you. Layton Exclusif in my opinion is much better as at least it has some depth underneath it and the overall negative sides of Layton are calmed down just a touch. If it wasn't for the extra cost of Exclusif then I would say it is the better shout of the three, just in my opinion of course.

Got my samples in today. I quite like both Layton and Percival but decided to go with Percival because all I got with Layton was basically what I believe is patchouli. Herod is also quite nice.

This is why it is important to test scents for yourself. Layton is super-hyped and could easily lead someone to believe they'd love it, and you tried it and didn't. Then you go end up going with Percival which not many people were mentioning.

There's also a great many people who are hugely tolerant to scents and tend to like huge amounts of them, and other people will find a far, far less amount of scents that will really appeal to them.

If I had to vote, my vote would go to Percival first, then Herod, and never Layton (easily the most overhyped disappointment in fragrance today)

Right now my favorites are Oajan and Herod. Carlisle is definitely good but it is similar to Oajan and Herod in certain aspects. So I would choose something a bit different like a Layton Exclusif or Percival (although Percival to me is not full bottle worthy unless you can get it for really cheap).
I would also recommend Pegasus. It is a nice clubbing/night out/Vegas strip type of scent.
