    Default Commodity Shuttered

Apologies if this is old news, but this is the first I’ve heard of Commodity’s demise:

    https://www.beautyindependent.com/fr...ty-shuttering/

    From the article:

In an astonishing turn of events, once-promising niche fragrance brand Commodity appears to have shuttered.

On April 12, employees at the brand’s branches in the United States and United Kingdom, which operated under the corporate entities Commodity Inc. and Commodity Europe Limited, were let go. Commodity’s products at Sephora in the U.S. are being sold at a discount to clear remaining inventory.

Financial distress seems to have been a factor in Commodity’s demise. Ash Huzenlaub, former CEO and managing director of Commodity, detailed in an Instagram post that he had attempted to acquire the brand and restructure it as a “more strategically distributed and focused entity from London” to save it from ruin. He wrote, “I have learned much and am sorry that the brand’s life was cut abruptly short. I and our ops team made every effort possible to carry on, to serve our vendors that we owed our best efforts.”

I have never seen this range in any of the stores or fragrance outlets in London --- not likely to now either

I reviewed one very unimpressive fragrance from them. Can't wait to see people put them on pedestals as misunderstood genius and hock them on eBay for $500 a pop.

We had their stuff at the Sephorae around here¹.

I'll be interested to see what replaces the shelf space. They were usually on one half of a partitioned table with what seemed to be the whole fragrance line available for testing; around nine bottles or so, IIRC.

The irony of a brand called "Commodity" being subject to actual scarcity is just too delicious to ignore.

I only ever tried one, of their scents. I almost purchased a sample set. I'd add it to "a cart" then leave it sit. Read numerous reviews, of many of their scents, and decided not to follow through with a purchase. Too many other houses seemed more interesting for discovering...

We had them here, and still do. I was shocked at the prices ($162) for what I considered really lame, innocuous, vapid....you get my drift. The bottles looked like niche though, sort of like Byredo.

Still sold, but prices are now slashed and I think still overpriced at around $97.

I'm disappointed as Book was a favorite of my son (he's 11). Otherwise, the house was somewhat interesting but nothing to write home about.

Check your local TJ Maxx and Marshall's locations. Quite a few of the stores have been getting these in at $39.99 for 100 ML bottles and $9.99 for the 10 ML Travel atomizers, some locations have also been getting the scented candles and bar soaps as well.

I wish I could find ANY decent scents at our local TJ Max/Marshalls!

OK, so thanks to the discounters I've got to sample a few Commodity scents and "lame, innocuous, vapid" is a bit too harsh and unjustified, as well as "waste of materials and space".

I think the proper term is just "average to good, but also sometimes boring". Nothing ever smelled like it was cheap, just also extremely safe and not much above what designers offered. In other words, the house lacked personality, but this seemed almost by design, so I'm not if any other outcome was possible. This stuff reminded me of the dour personality of Daria from Mtv, and inadvertently comes off cynical.

The pale Ikea monochrome pragmatist aesthetic works with furniture because you can add color, but this is perfume. Layering was encouraged with the line, but layering neutral with neutral just makes more neutral. This line needed some jazzy florals or truly provocative spices to diversify the "Book, Wool, and Depression" themes. I liked the Leather perfume from the Platinum Collection, but they were batting 1000 outside that.

I was in a Sephora a few days ago and was surprised at how few Replicas and Ateliers were there, as they used to have seemingly the entire lines. Atelier now reduced to a few citrusy ones, their Vanilla one, Rose Anonyme, Iris something or other, Cedre Atlas, Cafe Tuberosa, and that was about it. Sephora seems to be giving shelf space only to big sellers and ignore the rest. Their online store has more, but I go to their store to try new stuff, not buy online.

Anthracite by Tom Ford is no longer put on the shelves either, which is one of the reasons I went into the store.

If anyone is interested SpaceNK summer sale online should be starting later this month. I was told that the Commodity range had been called back from the stores to the warehouse and should be in the sale so half price or even less. I have no interest so won't be tempted to buy even at any price.

Huh... mine still has a lot of Atelier scents and Replica too. They even stock original Dior Homme, which is the only place I've seen it in person here.
