Default Perfume Critics (outside of Basenotes)

Who are the most reputable perfume critics on the Internet, outside the basenotes community? What are some of the best blogs? I googled it but could not get through commercial noise.

Some of my favorite blogs and sites are Raiders of the Lost Scent, Bois de Jasmin, Perfume Shrine, Kafkaesque, Now Smell This, Perfume Posse, Non-Blonde, CaFleureBon, MimiFrouFrou, Perfume-Smellin' Things and (for vintage lovers) Yesterday's Perfume.

    Persefume and Persolaise.
Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticize the content of a post - criticizing the poster is not.
Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals on Basenotes don't warrant or deserve my or other Basenoters' acknowledgement or respect.

+1 on all the aforementioned blogs/critics. Luca Turin's guide is very interesting and useful, although he does REALLY seem to have it out for Roja Dove haha.

Youtube is full of dubious options (see above: Jeremy lol), but I learned a LOT and got a lot of good info/insight from Sebastian at Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews. Lots of good videos on his channel, and I generally trust his nose:

ClaireV's blog is really great, but she hasn't been active there in about six months.

Lest we forget our own Shamu1, online at,

    https://pourmonsieurblog.blogspot.com/?m=1

He's been idle a while, but has a quite deep catalog of reviews still very relevant. get-to-the-point style of his reviews. And we share similar tastes, which is often useful to the interested reader.

Also, his BN reviews are here,

I'm surprised perfume critic isn't a more popular thing. There are several 'pro' critics in several categories. Film, music, TV, fashion, food, auto critics.....but perfume critic isn't on the same tier as all of them. Seems odd.

Not so difficult to understand. Why would a site or a magazine pay someone with every chance that person will piss off their advertisers with scathing reviews of their products? One thing for a Luca Turin to write reviews about obscure niche perfumes with limited distribution for Style.com, quite another to write about more mainstream offerings from Dior, Chanel, etc (though he did do a few on Guerlain).

And conversely, why pay someone to basically write ad copy for the fragrance industry when they will do that for free themselves with phony "reviews"? Though I realize some sites do exactly that, even among mass market magazines. And of course there are plenty of YouTube whores who will do that also, to keep the free stuff coming in.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. That's part of my point. Every other category I mentioned can suffer from the same issues. I forgot to add alcohol to the mix, though it could be included with food. lol
But yeah, the large websites, magazines, news programs have critics for.....TONS of items. Most I've listed. But never perfume. Everything in any type of business can fall victim to fake reviews, scams people getting paid off. It happens all the time.

http://scenthurdle.com/ - I believe the author of this blog is either a current or former member of BN. At any rate, fantastic reviews and analyses.

https://parfumieren.blogspot.com/ - I stumbled on this one a few months ago. Sadly, the author stopped writing in 2017 due to a brain tumor, but the several years' worth of reviews she wrote before then are simply excellent.

In both cases, the author is 1) a great writer, and 2) passionate and knowledgeable about scent. In that order.

Luca Turin definitely, Trebor's blog (I think he's no active really, apart from posting about vetiver essential oils), jtd's blog.

Trebor's blog is the best if you want to 'get through the commercial noise', but unfortunately he isn't really active anymore.
