I would have to disagree. If you have an interview or something you should not wear some loud ridiculous scent. If you are in an office or an airplane you shouldn't wear certain frags or too much. I think it's smart to wear what you like but keep other people in mind too, both to respect them or impress them depending on the situation.

Nice thread. It's a close poll, tied at 12.

I voted for formal: Chanel Pour Monsieur, Antaeus, Dior Homme, Boss No. 1, these are serious, not casual. So formal gets my vote, although I wear these with any kind of clothing, formal or casual - usually slightly formal.

As my previous comment illustrates there are many constructs in fragrance that have little to do with reality as it stands but there is always the underlying vibe of "appropriateness" and this is something we intuitively grok because fragrances are like sprinkles on the ice cream of life. Its cool without them but once you start throwing some on the deliciousness increases exponentially and just as there are certain things you'd throw on top of specific ice creams and not others.

Not because its "bad" because the end result would still be delicious but because it either compliments what is already there or, on the flip side, introduces a contradictory juxtaposition that works to create more than both aspects could alone.

To make a long story long thats the same way I feel about the whole casual/formal thing as all scents work, some just work better in some settings than others hence do what you want. A more interesting perspective is how perfumes and persona come together as we've all encountered scents that are too <insert descriptor> for our particular vibe/style/preference and thats an interesting avenue of introspection and discussion if there ever were one...

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the beach.

It is interesting that this poll seems to be split evenly as it continues to progress.

I find a formal fragrance paired with casual clothing a little more intriguing than a casual fragrance/formal wear combo. But I wonder if everyone’s on the same page with respect to ‘formal’ fragrances.

i definitely perceive some fragrances as more formal and some as more casual, although i couldnt tell you what the differences are. I think when i am at home or doing something recreational i probably prefer the ones the are more casual and when i am out an about, whether it is work or other, i prefer formal.

I think everyone can agree that the fragrance you pick on a day reflects ur mood, and therefore you chose the orange sanguine over roja scandal. And I'm sure ur in a different mindset going into a business meeting vs hitting the beach...

I enjoy formal fragrances more than casual ones, even when I'm not formally dressed.

I tend to wear more casual smelling fragrances. If I'm at work, with friends, on a first date, or just at a regular social event, I just want to smell clean and fresh.

I prefer though to wear more challenging, conspicuous or old school fragrances, but I feel like that's more appropriate for formal events, or romantic evenings.

Personally I enjoy both and have frags that fit either or both of these categories.

If I had to pick one, formal. I've sold fragrances as I considered them as too casual (gourmands, sweet, fruity, youthful club scents, prison yard jog pants/neon coloured budgy smuggler aquatics, for example).

Casual as it fits my clothing and lifestyle however I have scents that can be worn with a suit and tie such as Guerlain Vetiver, or GIT. I'm sure I have a few others but I like something I can feel comfortable in wearing shorts and a t shirt to dressed well.

We all have different senses of what qualifies as formal/informal. To me, Guerlain Vetiver is more of a casual scent; it's earthy and direct without the ornamentation I associate with formality.

In general, "green" scents tend to register as more informal to me than formal. Not that you couldn't wear them in formal situations, but the pictures they paint in my mind don't make me think of black tie attire.

I don't think I own anything that I couldn't wear with a suit (although subjective). That being said, I rarely have the need to wear suits.

It was really widespread when I was a kid. I certainly did, my friends did, pretty sure my dad did. I don't even know when and why it fell out of fashion.

Are we talking about actual contraband birds? Or is this some sly innuendo that's gone over my head?

    I think I'm missing some double-entendre here.
