Default Do You Prefer Casual Or Formal Fragrances, Why?

I myself prefer formal fragrances because they usually stand out and smell very nice. I don’t like to blend in with smells that are regularly worn by others, and most formal fragrances can be quite versatile as well.

I don't think there is a such thing; just as there is no such things with clothes, for the most part. Ask a random sample of people and they'll tell you a suit is formal wear, but this is not true. You can wear linen, seersucker, light wools, hell you can even wear a black suit and tie and if it is you then it is not formal it is just you.

To the extent I recognize the distinction at all, it depends on the time and place.

In the fragrance world, I've never thought of the distinction in literal terms of casual versus formal. I think a lot of scents are mostly interchangeable, unlike clothing.
A niche scent would wear well with a nice suit or tux, but it also goes well with jeans and a t-shirt.
I suppose from a marketing perspective, you can categorize fragrances based on their what attire or function they should be worn with.

I voted Formal because that’s what I’m heavily into. Formal for all occasions. Formal for casual wear. Formal for when I’m feeling formal or informal and for any formalities or informalities that may materialize. There’s that one Hallmark saying, “Life is a special occasion”.

Casual. All my scents are casual wears. Suits are for funerals and weddings, and cross my fingers will have none of those for at least 20 years.

In many cases, an even mix of both, however voted in favor of the formal fragrances just by a tiny, almost negligible margin since (at least so far) they seem to have covered all or most of the personal curiosity for daring, opulent, challenging, artistically and technically accomplished notes a slight bit better.

    Formal.

I'm just not a casual guy. Not even when I'm home chillin' in my lazy wear or out and about wearing jeans.

My style is very casual (think H&M/Uniqlo basics), and I usually wear whatever fragrance I feel like. Although I think it's funny to wear really over the top, luxurious, formal scents in diametrically opposing clothing; i.e. Royal Oud in gym shorts and a tank top. But honestly, even that doesn't feel like toooo much of a stretch to me. I also think that the Bay Area, where I live, and Seattle, where I grew up, are very casual places in general, so formality just isn't my vibe.

My tastes skew "formal," but I like some stuff that feels "casual," too. I just want to wear whatever adds a sparkle to the day and its activities.

It may be difficult to define "casual" and "formal" with regard to fragrances, but my impression is that casual tends to be fresh or sporty, or an "everyday" scent, whereas formal tends to be a little more unique and elegant. An example of casual vs. formal, in my mind, might be Acqua di Gio vs. Jubilation XXV, respectively (I know there is a big difference between the two). That being said, I tend to prefer formal fragrances, as casual fragrances tend to be more generic and forgettable. However, many fragrances can easily be considered casual AND formal. Take Aventus, for example. Ultimately, just wear whatever you enjoy!

Unless I’m in a formal mood; then it’s formally casual.

I'm glad I don't worry about whether the fucking things are casual or formal. Some pretentious crap. Such limited thinking. Boxing yourself in. Perfume is boundaryless.

Got on a bunch of vintage Patou pour Homme on today. Wearing sweatpants, no shirt and a pair of Crocs. Last time I wore an Armani suit I wore three sprays of Lapidus pour Homme. I could switch either one and never care as long as I like it.

Casual and formal are subjective inasmuch as what you feel qualifies the former but not the latter.

For me, something sweet and fruity like YSL L'Homme (2006) could only be casual while something stiffly woody like Salvatore Ferragamo Pour Homme (1999) is formal. Aquatics can go either way for me (eg: 1988's Cool Water feels casual with it's minty profile while 2002's Ralph Lauren Polo Blue feels formal with its chypre-like dry down), as can tobacco (eg. Versace Man from 2003 is sweet and casual while Eau des Baux from 2006 is peppery and formal).

Musky, rounded, heady, gourmand, oriental or animalic scents all belong in romantic settings. Just the way my mind sees them, and many ultra-masculine powerhouses are comical in their assertion of male prowess that they don't "rightly" fit anywhere. My point is, versatility and ease of replenishment matter most in what I reach for, so if you ignore the aftershave and Avon skewing in my wardrobe, you'll see that my answer is really "neither and/or both".

The only reason you should wear a fragrance is because you like it.

A little from column A and a little from column B.

I dont think theres really really such a strict dichotomy, and it’s very much down to individual perceptions so, just find what you like and go wild.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.
