Default Just tried Aventus for the first time and....

I've smelt it on people and loved it, I mean really loved it.
I've read about it and it seems to be universally respected if not universally loved.
It's been cloned copied and lusted after by many.
Yet I had not tried it on my own skin...until yesterday!
Well I was in John Lewis and didn't even realise they had a Creed franchise until I was on top of it.
Naturally I couldn't believe I was finally about to try a spray of the King Aventus....
The sales lady sprayed a card first and yes there it was, that unmistakable awesome smell of Aventus.
I then with a beating heart received a few decent sprays on my arm, waited a few seconds and....
....nothing...well yes something but not the Aventus smell, not even close!
It smelt less like Aventus than my A&F 'Authentic' in fact it smelt a little...well...odd, off if you like?
Now as I left the shop with my tattered expectations trailing behind me I wondered...why?
Ok it did start to morph a little more like Aventus as time went on but to be honest not by much and the projection and silage was rubbish to, in fact it was weak!

    What's going on here?
I know it was genuine so why did it fall flat on my skin!
At least I had a lucky escape as I'd have been gutted to have spent £250 gbp on that crap.
Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of Aventus but it appears only on others and sadly not me

Perhaps your expectations were too high?

Post-IFRA Aventus is not nearly as good. New Avenuts smells much like a cheap clone of the 2012-era Aventus.

Oh well. Hopefully the new Aventus Cologne will be a hit!

Yeah the first time I smelled it I was let down too. It just is not anything special.

They say that Aventus changed due to IFRA as of start of 2014.

May be olfactory fatigue. Unfortunately that's why I experience with Aventus - it smells heavenly initially, but then I don't smell a thing, and others would tell you that you smell amazingly

If you are wearing it for yourself, then you have your answer. If you are wearing it for others, then you have to spray it on, walk by the kinds of people you are seeking to impress, and then ask them what they think.

    Likely the case.

Well, that sucks. Sounds like you have uncooperative skin.

If you really like the way Aventus smells and want to be able to wear it (and still smell good), you might want to try again and this time spray plenty of it on your clothes. Also try places like on your chest under your undershirt, and the same spot but on the other side on your upper back.?

If that doesn’t work then give up.

This and......your individual skin can alter a scent. Each person is different. Try spraying it on your clothes instead next time and maybe it will be better.

I was disappointed too at first. I thought it smelled like farts to be honest. I even made a thread about it, and it brought out a lot of like-minded people. Not that agreed it smelled like farts, but that it was nothing special. Fast forward a couple years, and I tried a few more samples from different batches and was pleasantly surprised. The better batches are quite nice. Although the pineapple heavy ones are particularly sought after, imo the even and well balanced ones are the best. You're gonna have to get into Aventus batch searching to find the right ones. From what I've seen there are hundreds of different batches.

That's why I prefer Cedrat Boise from Mancera, because it takes the overall Aventus concept, without the inconsistency, and makes an incredible fragrance that is good quality and well performing, and it costs less than half the price. I recommend checking out this one, if you wind up getting tired of looking for the perfect Aventus.

The chances of this living up to the hype are about the same as dropping a rose petal into the grand canyon and hearing the echo. Welcome to the ranks of those puzzled and bemused by the fact that this this perfectly decent, garden-variety fragrance managed to secure a totalitarian grip on the psychic cajones of its fans.

I mean, the market was different when Aventus first hit. Now, it's kind of old hat.

    The letdown is real.
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

Agreed - I don't find it extraordinary by any means. In fact, the first portion of the stuff I had I sold on. Now, I'm finding myself tending to it more as it's easy to wear, not too in my face, mass-appealing and lasts decently on my skin.
It's by no means my favourite fragrance but it's so easy for me to reach for, I'm tempted to sell other 'daily drivers' in favour of this, which will help me whittle down my collection.

Seems like a classic case of anosmia to me. Why on earth would you put a "few decent sprays" to your arm? One is all you need with this stuff and you are better off giving the sprays to somewhere like the back of your head where your nose won't turn a blind... eye... to the aromachemicals in this.

Any more than literally two sprays on you and this will literally disappear.

My advice (and it is meant literally), is to go back to the store, fresh after a shower and with clean clothes, then do two sprays only of this on you, away from the nose (so no chest spraying). Make sure you wear no other scent on you at all. Then make up your mind

I find the arm to be one of the worst places to fire up a fragrance -- somehow it just flattens it out

It's still dynamite to me and I love it as much as the week it was launched -- can't wait to get the Cologne

It can be quite likely a combination between the often mentioned batch variations and skin variables.
Personally never had this experience with this fragrance (uncertain about the batch and its release year) after first having it, at least so far. Both the scent, as much as its performance standing out as excellent.

The store was a long way from where I live so returning is not really an option and it was an unexpected sampling as I had a bit of time on my hands after a meeting and decided to call in at a large mall on my way home.
I already had fragrance on my chest/neck and just wanted to see how Avntus smelt on my skin, I didn't have anything on my arm so it was the best place to put the sample spray.
I should have explained the scenario better I think.
I initially had a single spray but there was literally nothing so that's when I put a couple more on...still nothing.
