Thread: What Next?

    Default What Next?

    Hi All -

Hoping to get some advice/feedback on my next purchase. I know summer is (for some of us) around the corner, but I am hoping to buy something not ONLY geared for summer, but that can be pulled off year round. As you can see... my collection skews pretty light/fresh and I'd like to diversify that a bit.

    What I Have Now:

    L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme
    Creed Original Vetiver
    St. Barts Set Sail
    Banana Republic Neroli Woods
Maison Margiela Jazz Club (Don't love it)
Maison Margiela At the Barbers (Decant)

    Considering:

    Creed Royal Oud
    Chanel Egoiste

Anything else you'd suggest checking out? I am definitely looking for something with more weight/versatility. Suggestions welcome!

    Thanks!

I love Royal Oud, and I think it's a good year round option. It's light and crisp, which works well in warm weather, but it also has lots of spices and a great sandalwood dry down that are nice for cooler temperatures. I know Egoiste has a lot of fans here, but I haven't tried it.

Maybe Terre d'Hermes - it's my go-to scent when I can't decide on anything, and I like it year round - it's got some nice citrus crispness but also some earthy depth with the vetiver.

    Que scay-je?

Egoiste would be a good choice.

Burberry London in addition to those you are considering.

Also seconding Chanel Egoste, while further adding a few of the modern Penhaligon's fragrances, especially Opus 1870, Endymion and/or Sartorial to a possible (re) testing list

It seems to me that you could check out anything, so my advice would be go read the countless reviews here on Basenotes and Fragrantica.

If you're already considering Egoiste, then go for it. It's awesome.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up purchasing a small bottle of Egoiste last night. Hopefully it’s not too overpowering for summer.

If you can find a vintage bottle, that's something worth owning.

How about Opium Pour Homme. I had Egoiste when it launched and a few years ago revisited it along with a few others with similar notes and added the YSL as I felt it was fresher and more versatile.

I think that in general, adding fresh/woody and fresh/green, as well as stronger spicy aqua, will work for you. Some freshness will keep them wearable in summer, but extend them to year round.

    Viking
    Green Irish Tweed
Bleu de Chanel (pick what works best)
    Yohji Homme by Yohji Yamamoto
    Hommage a L'Homme by Lalique
    Bulgari Aqua (Bvlgari Aqva)
    Sel Marin by Heeley
Sel de Vetiver by The Different Company
    Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisée
    Terre d'Hermès
    Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraïche

Just a few I like off the top of my head. These are big classes with lots of great fragrances.

Hey, in this context - have you tried Ormonde Man?

Actually never, but I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of Ormonde samples stashed somewhere. Will check it out if it's in them. Thanks!

Thanks! I appreciate all of those recommendations. I have been eyeing GIT as well - seems fresh enough for summer but versatile. I have been trying to find something that smells a bit more "serious" without compromising that freshness.

Some good recs already. Egoïste is a very good choice.

One of my recent blind-buys, Vera Wang for Men, might be worth considering. It can be had for a pittance, but it's immaculately made, with enough lift and brightness from the citrus elements to be wearable in warmer months (excluding extreme heat), but enough heft to feel luxurious. Like Burberry London, it can do both "office" and "date night" with ease, but I think it's altogether a bit better-made than London is.

Me personally, I could never see wearing Burberry London or anything similar for Summer. But, judging from your current collection I recommend Carolina Herrera 212 Men NYC. Fresh floral metallic musk. Its superb, strong and long lasting, and has plenty of performance for any season. My phone is dying, or I would have more.

I think London wears light and close enough that you can get away with it in most weather conditions, but it doesn't strike me as being particularly summer-friendly.

At any rate, it's a much better "sweet tobacco" scent than the OP's Jazz Club, so it's worth a mention.

Another option worth considering is Histoires de Parfums 1725 Casanova. Wears well in most weather conditions with just enough presence to sustain it in cold weather.

Either of the two, of course if budget is an issue, go Chanel.

So Egoiste is, unfortunately, not at all what I remember from a prior sample. Not sure if I need to give it more time, but I’m considering returning and just buying Royal Oud instead, which I know I love.
