Default Does transferring fragrances from bottles to atomizers do anything to the juice?

    Hi there

Pretty new to fragrances and just had a quick question about transferring juice from bottles to atomizers. I bought a few bottle of fragrances that I like, but don't like enough to use the entire bottle or don't encounter as many situations to use them. I have a few 100mL bottles of fragrances that I am thinking of transferring maybe 15-20 mL from each and sell the remaining bottles of craigslist and use that money to buy fragrance that I REALLY like. Dumb question but I am curious if transferring to smaller atomizer will do anything to the juice itself or affect the smell of it?

    Thanks!

    In my experience, no.

The obvious points apply about not contaminating the liquid in the process, using sterilised atomisers.

Your most likely issues will come from cheap atomisers allowing evaporation and/or exposure to light/heat due to the thin glass (avoid plastic). I think it's probably better to pour and/our use a pipette to transfer, but spraying 'in' to the new atomiser isn't the worst thing in the world. I'd probably look to minimise oxidizing the scent in this way if you're planning on keeping it in a decent quantity for any serious length of time, however.

The less exposure - to air, heat, and light - the longer the fragrance will last...i.e. the longer it'll be its best 'self'...

Try it out with a small quantity first. Trial and error, always a good way to test something.

Not if you make sure the atomizer you transfer to has a good seal. Evaporation during storage is the greatest danger to decants.

Spraying into a new container or a funnel and from there into a new container does nothing significant to a fragrance. After the first spray, the air in the new container or funnel is effectively saturated, so any minor relatively greater losses of more volatile stuff is effectively nil after a couple of sprays, and it typically takes a good number of sprays even for a 1-mL sample.

    No worries.

l've never found that it changes the scent in any way, but like others here, l'd urge you to avoid plastic atomisers. l have had precious fragrances evaporate alarmingly quickly from these. The same goes for Travalos. Use a good quality glass atomiser with a decent seal.

Avoid using plastic atomizers as they are more prone to leakage, evaporation, oxidation, and possible contamination by the plastic material. Glass atomizers are the way to go. Be sure to use parafilm and or plumber tape around both the neck of the atomizer and the spray head. This will help in reducing evaporation, leakage, and oxidation from occurring.

This is a practical thread that makes me love my little Guerlain buzz bottle atomizer even more.

A good quality atomizer would seem to be the thing, but it's hard to identify a good one. I've had plastic ones that held up just fine, but others that evaporated quickly.

Folks tend to believe it's a bad seal at the threads, and while that may be true on occasion, I'm convinced that the issue often lies with the atomizer mechanism itself . That little steel ball in there…if it doesn't sit just right in it's seat, I think that's where the juice slowly pumps itself out, in response to changes in temperature.

Yes! Creed atomizers also have almost bottle-quality seals. Stuff lasts forever in them with only bottle-level changes.

Good thinking. Probably both, sometimes. Some dry very quickly.. Think I might start parafilming my plastic sample atomizers that remain. That will block both routes.

In agreement with the advice above to use glass atomizers. Over time the juice can interact with plastic and create a chemical soup.

This. I transfer the contents of almost all of my splash bottles to glass atomizers, as needed, and they all smell wonderful.

Make sure that the bottle and atomizer is sealed tightly and you'll be fine.

No, unless you're storing plastic containers in warm climates, in the sun etc.
No, unless your atomisers are grossly unclean.
No, unless you spill it on the floor, mop it up and wring the resulting melange into your atomiser.

Good atomisers are key, typically glass ones are decent. You might suffer more evaporative loss with cheaper atomisers.

Parafilm is great stuff. The one I swear by is 'plumbers' tape/PTFE tape. Light wrapping on the threads before screwing the atomiser head on, et voila. Not encountered any issues, yet.

Likely doesn't do much unless not treated well as is the same with your fb's (light + heat).
I use glass atomisers for pretty much all the frags barthe ones I've not got round to filling up.
In fact I feel it seems to help development - maybe I'm perceiving what I want to here(!), But I feel they 'mature/macerate' quicker better. Sorta like ripening em up - less liquid , more light air and heat will reach it = quicker maturation. Ha sounds like stoner science!!
Opted for glass for its inertness and have recently got some heavy duty plastic ones. Will see if the plastic makes a big difference, as 5-10ml in there I feel won't stay in there long enough to have a discernible impact.

Anyway, atomiser people... you are MY people😂

To answer your question: YES, its volume drops.

I transfer 5-10ml of all my fragrances into atomisers so I can have a ready to go top up of my scent if heading out. I’ve been doing this for many years and never noticed any difference in scent. I personally prefer plastic in case I ever drop one (which I have on many occasions)

I haven’t found the plastic to affect the scent in any way but minimal leakage can occur over time, not enough to bother me
