Default Question for 1-3 Sprays Fellas That Can Smell Their Fragrance All Work Day (6-8 hours)

I have a few questions for you lucky guys and ladies out there that are able to smell their fragrance throughout the work day (6-8 hours). Of course, I understand the fragrance itself is a major factor, as well as the strength of our noses, or lack thereof. Another factor obviously is if we can detect certain notes or not. Some of us are anosmic to certain notes. Nonetheless, for the lucky ones that can enjoy their SOTD throughout the work day with just 1-3 sprays, can you be more specific?

Do you get constant whiffs all day like every few minutes or so (scent bubble)?

Random whiffs maybe 2-3 times every hour or so?

Whiffs only when you smell your skin or shirt directly from inches away or closer?

Whiffs via forced sillage such as turning your head or pulling your shirt?

Or do you get just a few whiffs throughout the day?

The point of this thread is to educate myself and others on what most people mean when they say their fragrance lasts all work day. Until recently, Like many others, I use to think a fragrance is suppose to be constantly smelled throughout the day, like almost every time I breath in, or at least dozens of whiffs every hour or so. Of course, that would require me being the cologne guy so I scratched that idea. Still, I think people have a difference of opinion when they indicate their fragrance can be smelled all day. Some people are happy with just a few whiffs, while others want or expect more. Of course, I understand bringing a decanter will ensure all day performance. But the above questions are for those that apply it once in the morning and they don't reapply the entire work day.

    Thanks!
    Rich

If you're thinking you should be able to smell any scent that you wear every time that you breath in then you must be over spraying and wreaking of it. The effect on others of over spraying is usually not good. The beauty in fragrances is picking them faintly and being pleasantly surprised when you tune into them. Even the best of scents over sprayed and too loud create an awful experience for those around you.

When you walk up to a bar and someone's like that most people think "jesus christ, someone here stinks" because it is so invasive, and thus the person comes across all wrong and its like they have no self-awareness of the negative impression they're giving off.

What you're better off doing, particularly in a work day, is wearing something more lightly and taking an atomiser if you want to replenish it after lunch or something, the other approach of just wearing too much to begin with and relying on performance often means the person is over spraying it.

Less is more for so many people.

If you want to smell it more, do your applications where you might smell it more, such as arms or top of chest, but don't use more.

For me, that means that I either get whiffs of it every hour or so, or I can smell it easily when sniffing skin directly. I usually spray 2-4 sprays before work. I do get a pretty robust scent bubble the first hour or two (depending on the frag of course), but after that it's more from smelling my arm (I always spray the top of my left forearm).

I tried to achieve that constant scent-inhalation effect when I was first getting into fragrances, and it resulted in either 1) the aforementioned offensive "cologne guy" problem, and/or 2) the olfactory fatigue that quickly sets in and prevents you from smelling it in either case.

    It doesn't work like that.

Some scents (eg Mancera Hindu Kush) are insanely strong off 1 spray and you'll smell it all day and night whether you want to or not. Going heavier on the trigger here will probably make your first born step onto the scene projecting it strongly due to how their epigenetic factors were influenced by its composition.

Others like Aventus will cause anosmia to kick in with a quickness at anything over 3 sprays and you won't smell a thing whilst everyone else does.

Finally consider something like Endymion where you could literally bathe in it and no one would know you were even wearing a scent 6 hours later.

And all thats before you get into variables like skin chemistry, body temperature, relative humidity, air temperature etc.. as there are loads of factors that influence it hence why there is no one size fits all approach.

Having a scent you can smell at full blast, all the time, all day and all night is an absolutely horrendous experience as fresh air is what makes the body run, not a selection of aroma chemicals!

A much more salient avenue of thought (or should that be over thought?) for you would be where to spray as differing places have differing effects due to how they hold/project the scent. Try behind the ears, chest possibly on clothes and that will easily get you through the day. Have fun, play, experiment.

Depends a lot on the fragrance. Some stuff sits heavy, some stuff sits light. But on average I'm a 2-4 spray guy, 2 for heavier stuff, 4 for lighter.

I generally apply scent to the back of my forearms so the scent will hang on to the hair, spraying close to the skin so the juice is concentrated in a small area. I get nice, occasional whiffs (four or five times an hour) throughout the fragrance's lifespan.

As previously mentioned, it depends on the fragrance.

A fragrance like Creed Royal Oud is exemplary in this regard. It creates a plentiful scent bubble that isn't invasive to those close by but the wearer will enjoy for most of the day through regular wafts before becoming a skin scent late in the day. Meanwhile it allows those close by to catch an occasional intriguing whiff. I find about 3 sprays are best for me with RO but not all fragrances will perform this ideally.

A single spray of Antaeus to the chest under a shirt can work just as well in the right conditions. One difference would be that without spraying your arms others may notice your fragrance less because the fragrance molecules would have less movement.

The more you experiment with how you wear them, where you spray and how many sprays the more satisfied you will be with your scent of choice.

It will waft up every once and awhile, and I can smell it on my arms of course if I spray there. However, I do not want to smell it often; there is an elegance in simplicity and overpowering, huge compositions are not that. Plus, say I wore Tuscan Leather. It smells fantastic, but it overpowers the smells of everything else. How can I enjoy the subtle fragrance of a nice wine, or the smell of my charcoal pencils and paint if I have this huge cloud of smell wafting into my nose that smells like someone's interpretation of raspberry and leather chemicals? That goes for most heavy scents in my general day to day life. Essentially I you could say I enjoy a fragrance that allows to me keep as close to a clean palate as possible in order to enjoy the smells of life.

Depends. I hope to not smell it constantly. Dont particularily enjoy that. 10 wafts an hour seems heavy. Say 4-5 wafts seems about right. And if you search it out it should be present.

On workdays I also spray my left arm above the watch so I can explicitly sniff. I don't expect (and shouldn't) smell myself after the morning dosing but I'm glad if it comes back to me when I get a little warm (climb stairs, run for the bus) or when I take off my jacket, etc. That's all a guy can ask for, I think.

And as much as most folks like to get noticed I still am a little freaked out when some one at work mentions my SoTD. I usually will take that one out of the work rotation after that happens, depending on the nuance of the interaction.

Constant whiffs make me conscious that I have overapplied and might be offending others. I don’t count the whiffs but they remain random and decrease in frequency as the day passes. I usually do 1-2 sprays.

Absolutely agree with this. I usually wear vintage perfumes that were made of sturdy stuff, and I'm a light sprayer - one spray on each forearm close to the wrist. I catch wafts of fragrance all day long (I've never timed them, LOL). By evening, I can still smell the perfume when I breathe on my skin. Now, if I were to do two sprays of Casbah (Piguet), six showers wouldn't budge them! So it just depends, and the variables are many.

Sung Homme and Aventus are two easily, easily overdone fragrances. One of Aventus just below the adam's apple or a little lower for the Sung so it's partially covered by shirt, and I'll get whiffs of it here and there until at least mid afternoon.

No matter what it is, the fact that I cannot smell it before I leave the house is never a reason to apply more. I'll see how it plays out that day or evening and make any adjustments next time.

Underdoing it is simply a minor lost opportunity. Overdoing it does damage - to yourself and/or to others. Pro-tip: many "compliments" are in reality a passive aggressive message that you are wearing too much.

Wafts all day long, but I also spray the back of my left hand to sniff as I work.

There are some things that are both insanely strong and linear, like Tuscan Leather. If I wear something like that, it's usually 1 or maybe 2 sprays, and that's it. I don't want to be "trapped" by a fragance, and things like that will do that.
    Most worn:

Black Comme des Garçons, Borneo 1834 Serge Lutens, Patchouli Santa Maria Novella

I have four sprays of POLO and I've been here at work for 9 hours. If I shift around in my seat I can pick up faint wafts of it. It's perfect, because it's juuust noticeable and not cloying or harsh at all.

To me, some fragrances that are incredibly good smell bad when overdone. For instance Kolonya by Rasei Fort. Or Dior Homme Intense.

I get random whiffs and that seems perfect.

One of the strange things about wearing fragrance is that you don’t smell it as much as someone right next to you often does.

I wear all fragrances on my undershirt, never my skin.

It's like spraying clothing to enhance longevity. It will revolutionize your fragrance analysis. The reason that spraying the backs of your hands works, IMO, is that it maximizes both the range of the values of momentary olfactory strength, and the steepness of changes in that value in time, repeatedly, all day long.

I wash my hands multiple times a day. What then? And nobody say not to wash the tops of your hands. lol
Eliminate that drawback and yeah, I'd say it's an ideal scent location.

Depends on the scent for me. I will NOT wear something I can not smell on myself throughout the day. I have tested many many different ones till I found the ones that worked and smelled amazing on me. I vary rarely use less than 2 sprays or more than 4, and I know each of mine intimately enogh to know exactly where and how I can spray to get the desired perfect performance. Like with Sauvage I spray right behind my ears, and Bleue Dissey I spray right under my ear lobes. Narciso Rodriguez, it's under my shirt on top of my shoulders, where Acqua Di Gio Profumo can be a 5 hour strong performer under and slightly behind the ears, or a subtle 12 hour laster with two sprays under the shirt on the shoulders. May seem silly to some, but a few inches and some clothes can change how it performs drastically in relation to how I smell them on myself. It's worth tediously testing.

    This +1

I know I sound a little crazy but the spraying my forearms thing was a real game changer. If you have particularly hairy arms - as I do, luckily - it holds the scent really well. And since your arms are the most active body part in your upper body, it does a nice job of spreading the scent around and giving you more little whiffs throughout the day.

I usually hit my biceps instead of the forearm. I worry that the forearm or wrists might project my scent too much. I agree, the wrist/forearm is definitely the best location for projection.
