    Default Underwhelmed by M7

Ok ok I hear ya it's a shadow of its former self!
I recently picked one up to see what all the fuss is about.
Quite underwhelmed honestly! Ive been trying it the last few days. Seems quite paltry? Thin ? Feels very generic, unless it's the one that kicked off this style ? I'm getting warmth for sure, amber orangey , not enough peppery ness or bite to make any impact. The 'oud' part is the kinda cheap smelling roll on oil white and musky?

I think I read somewhere that "Dirty English is what M7 should a been".

    Sacrilege - in a blind test I'm 90+% certain I'd pick DE.

    What have you're experiences been?

My experiences with the original release have been nothing but positive.

Never smelt the current version or any of the reformulations. Love love love the original 4 ingredient version.

I haven't smelled the recent version so I'm surprised that it is thin.

In general, though, even regarding the first version, it was innovative back then. But with about 1500 ouds in western perfumery right now, M7 doesn't seem as interesting as it once was when it first appeared.

I think you have to have the original version to truly appreciate this fragrance. YSL had no fear then -- there was a noticeable medicinal aspect to it.

I had original one before and that one is pretty good. Not an, "OMG I LOVE IT", but it's pretty good.

Later on the gf bought me a bottle of the Oud Absolu flanker, and... well... it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't the same. Either my nose evolved and/or it is different. Got rid of it soon after.

Try the original if you haven't.

Did you read this in Mad Magazine or something? :P

But seriously, I hated M7 when it first came out. Got samples by the dozen from Nordstrom. Then one day, I blind bough M7 Fresh and it clicked. I then decided to purchase a bottle of the original and was a convert. The original is not thin at all. It's quite potent, has quite a bit of depth to it, rich and flamboyant to some extent. I have not tried any iterations since the clear bottle Absolu with the black encasing and found that to be about 90% there, but lacking in some of the top notes that gave it that unmistakable kick.

Interestingly enough, Helmut Lang Cuiron was released about the same time. That particular fragrance disappeared, then reappeared with a relaunch several years ago, but since has fallen out of discussion completely as far as I can tell, so much so I don't recall if the relaunch ever lived up to the original, either.

I'm fortunate to have a bottle of the four ingredient M7 and I really enjoy it although it took me a few wearings finally "get it". I also have a bottle of Oud Absolu and it's sits closer to Tom Ford's Oud Wood- with these later two being lighter iterations of the same theme. All three are essentially "good" with the original being the heaviest/darkest and also having that "cherry coke" accord while Oud Wood seems the creamiest of the three. Also for me, each of these scents tend to pull the disappear/reappear act quite a bit while wearing; I'll think it has disappeared entirely only to get a nice waft later on.

M7 suffers the same fate as many often-copied fragrances: You've already smelled it over and over with millions of copycats and done much better by things that came after long before you finally trace your way back to the origin of the species. In it's day M7 was hot @#$% on a silver plate, but now it's just "oh yeah this where Oud Wood came from" etc.

This, especially when M7 is seated on such a high pedestal. I personally like it and have been getting good use from my decant of the oud absolu version

Ok, my understanding is you’ve tried M7 Oud Absolu , which has now been renamed M7 to add to the confusion.
Personally I think this version is a pretty nice designer. Not particularly oudy and nothing especially unusual.

Part of M7’s reputation is for being one of the originators, while the current iteration is generally just regarded as a pleasant designer oud out of dozens or hundreds currently available. I think you need to sample a vintage version of M7 and also take into account it’s historical/market context at the time of release.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

Is this the newest current version of M7 (once again called simply "M7" on the bottle, apparently they dropped the oud absolute part) that is being referenced when talking about "current" M7 and how it compares to the original vintage?

    My thoughts exactly on everything.

I had M7 a long time ago but decided to sell it. I then tried the reformulated version and didn't care for it at all.

I wound up buying a small bottle of M7 back! I dunno....

Being only familiar with the vintage (or at least chronologically close to the initial release) formulation plus at least one flanker of this one from a fairly similar time interval, should the chance arise to test/sample the current formulation will be eager to share any impressions. Both how it stands out on its own, almost like a standalone if never having tested vintage M7 and in comparison to this very initial release.

For a mainstream scent designed to be for the masses, M7 isn't bad I suppose in any form. Not my cup of tea but I am not a fan of oud or sweet scents.

That said, oud is a love/hate note. So, depending on which side of the fence you are:

You're right but I don't think the choice applies to M7, i.e. personally I don't find it 'oudy' as most of us perceive 'oud' to be -- it's more of a resinous woody with both sweet and sharp facets imo

Quite right and you did well to point this out. M7 and Royal Oud are both scents that are not very 'oudy'. The latter being about woods as well (sandalwood and cedar) among other well crafted notes (angelica, galbanum).

Owning and loving both (and they're old bottles), I do not really feel like Dirty English and M7 are very similar.

The reason I'm not a big fan of M7 is that it pales in comparison to Kerosene R'Oud Elements in the same fruity medicinal light oud genre, as long as you are willing to accept orange bitters instead of cherry cough syrup as the fruity accord. R'oud is very similar but ten times stronger.

Lol I'm getting that now. Possibly an uber version of DE is what I wanted M7 to be like!! Like usual and not following my own rules(!) should give things around a good 3-4 weeks to 'get' them.

Never owned M7, but it was kinda deja-vu experience when I first smelled M7OA.
I don't think of it as a quality oud scent, it isn't edgy or "Avantgarde" or whatever. But to me it is one of the best budget masculine amber scents around. In fact I prefer it to many (if not most) current niche ambery-spicy faux ouds around. Just my two cents.

You never know! Sometimes people discover remarkable perceptive similarities, and all that is needed to experience them is the suggestion. I will be trying these side-by-side to try to get it!

I had the original back in 2002 my god this was incredibly strong-one spray was enough.
Just tried the new clear bottle version, and I have to say that M7 is an incredible fragrance.
I think it's so good that it blows away most of The Tom ford exclusive line in my opinion.
It's a classic for me up there with egoiste.
I also wanted to add that I cannot tell any difference between the old and the new bottles.
They both smell exactly the same to me.
