It’s been awhile since I wore a Tauer. This is reminiscent of Le Coeur or Marocain but a bit more rubbery and makes you think of the long dusty road in New Mexico...

Glad I picked up a couple bottles dirt cheap at Gordman's a good while back, the prices are totally ridiculous now - I always wonder WHO pays that sort of money for something that was common and never expensive? I like it, but would I spend 135+ bucks for a bottle? No way.

The reason is Trophyism: an unpopular word officially undefined by dictionary authorities, that is a psychological condition of self-aggrandizement through either people or possessions that convey status through conquest of said "trophies". Usually this phenomenon is limited to athletic medals or people marrying into wealth or celebrity for status boosts, but can apply to collection hobbies like cards, figurines, and perfume as well.

It doesn't so much matter if it was a drugstore brand or a designer brand in life, just so long as enough popular consensus within the relevant group (in our case the fragrance community) dictates that scarcity equals value and status, ergo the rarer something becomes, the more desirable it is regardless of its retail worth or availability when produced. Hype within the community after discontinuation affects this, and the buyers/resellers of old stock in gray markets can also just sometimes "create" a shortage by monopolizing remaining supply within a few hands to dictate price vis-a-vis arbitration, which then affects rarity and price like a feedback loop.

Perfume has an added facet of trophyism just like collectable wine and spirits in that the item being being "trophied" (transitive verb) is also exhaustible, and with discontinued perfumes also being non-replenishable, their usage infers a kind of additional layer of status because your enjoying of something only makes it more scarce over time, and will one day cease to exist altogether with said enjoyment, adding another layer of appreciation on remaining stock.

In short, if enough people talk about it after it's gone, or enough resellers make speculative purchases on a discontinued scent to invest in its value, even something like an IZOD perfume can become a "unicorn" to collectors within the hobby. I've seen discontinued L'Occitane scents go for more than vaulted Creeds, and it's pretty silly, but apparently the bragging rights of ownership make it all the more worth it, while people who just miss the scent itself are mostly left out in the cold unless they have the cash to blow.

Thank you, that was an excellent explanation better than my "Oh well, some people just have more money than sense" observation.
