Default Which Chanel As A Gift? (Please Vote To Help Out)

    Hi everyone!

Need some help picking out a Chanel as a gift for my aunt.

So... which Chanel of the ones listed above would you choose for the following person profile:
    - Woman in her 40s
    - Single, no intention to marry or have kids (might've been married to a surfer in Hawaii before? We don't really know)
    - Smart as a whip, but occasionally seeming scatter-brained
    - Quiet, a little aloof
    - Prolific reader
    - Adventurous, but responsible, won't get too crazy
    - Stylish, but a little eccentric and a little undone
    - Direct, but not rude
    - Secretive (sometimes I think to a fault)
    - Lowkey spiritual
    - Very interested and invested in the arts
    - Brunette with dark brown eyes
    - Writes plays in her free time
    - Drinks a gin and tonic with every meal (except breakfast, I think) but is otherwise quite health-conscious
    - Wears vintage kimonos, but always gets them tailored to suit her beforehand
    - Loves travelling, constantly hopping from place to place (or making new plans to)
    - Favourite colour is yellow
    - Can't decide if her favourite actress is Marilyn Monroe or Lauren Bacall
    - Can't decide if she wants to live in London or Paris next
    - Always on time
    - Takes great care of her skin but couldn't care less about her hair
    - Has a best friend in every country, but I think is a bit lonely in daily life
    - Loves gardening, but is not very good at it
    - Likes watching the same movies over and over
    - Can't swim, but loves the beach
    - Favourite song is "Hey Jude"
    - Will wear espadrilles with a formal dress at a formal occasion
    - Hates "dress-codes" and will disregard them on purpose
    - Is both a liberal democrat and a romantic for other times
    - Won't shop in certain places for ethical reasons (sometimes for genuinely ethical reasons (where are these clothes made? under what conditions? what is the company doing in terms of good for society and the environment?), and sometimes because she thinks ugly clothes are unethical)
    - Is generally very good at accepting people for who they are on an individual level, but is also very sharply critical of "mass mentality"

    Thanks for the help!
(I'm trying to choose Chanel because she once told me she always wanted to grow up to be the kind of woman who had a signature Chanel fragrance, but was too lazy to look into it herself).

I voted for No 19 because it seems to me no 5 would seem a bit too proper and classic (and she seems to be a touch unconventional), but Cristalle would be too cold. No 19 seems to strike a better balance.

The big hair Coco doesn't quite seem like it.

Beige from the Exclusif collection is my recommendation.

Update: Oops that wasn't on your list!

Actually I would also recommend Allure EDT. Sorry, none of the ones you listed seemed to fit her description!

If she is critical of 'mass mentality', then not sure Chanel is the right brand for her?

If Chanel then +1 on No 19.

No. 19 but NOT the eau de parfum you have listed. It's had all the green joy leached out of it, and is too dark. Get the EDT or the parfum. It's definintely a Lauren Bacall scent.

My vote is No. 19 Poudre. Very modern and quirky at the same time. Not too dressy and not too casual. Not a fragrance that is everywhere. I think it's an equivalent to a Jil Sander design.

First of all, you're wonderful for knowing your aunt so precisely and wanting to give her something special.
I vote for the Chanel discovery set. Who wants to wear the same perfume when dressed in a kimono or while sitting at the beach? Give her options. The set runs $250, which might be a bit more than you wanted spend, but perhaps another family member would want to go in on it with you.

This limited-edition Discovery Set features a selection of fifteen exquisite, preciously sized scents from the LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL collection. Presented in this beautiful, signature coffret ideal for the fragrance connoisseur and collector alike. Size: 15 x 0.12 oz.
Composed of rare and intricate ingredients, each fragrance embodies the exceptional art of perfuming and evokes a chapter from the story of Gabrielle Chanel.
    Set includes:
    GARDÉNIA
    BEL RESPIRO
    N°22
    COROMANDEL
    BOIS DES ILES
    SYCOMORE
    CUIR DE RUSSIE
    BEIGE
    31 RUE CAMBON
    JERSEY
    N°18
    1932
    LA PAUSA
    MISIA
    EAU DE COLOGNE

If the cost isn't prohibitive, I must agree with Quarry. That set is the kind of gift no one would ever forget -- especially if "she always wanted to grow up to be the kind of woman who had a signature Chanel fragrance, but was too lazy to look into it herself".

With that set, you'd have done all the work for her, and she can discover her scent on her own.

I also agree with Quarry. I think the gift of choice would be appreciated by the person, and force her to actually engage with the scents she is presented. What a brilliant idea

Also agree with Quarry... The Discovery Set is worth every penny. From those listed, though, I'd have to go with No 5 Eau de Parfum.

    Hi guys.

Thanks for taking the time to help out, I really appreciate it!

I do have a few lingering questions, though, so if anyone feels like chiming in

The discovery set: This looks [I]stunning[I], and is quite tempting, I have to say. I had no idea they made this. And while it looks incredible, I am a little bit concerned with the scenario that she tries them, maybe finds the one or two she loves the most, and then... finds out you can only get them online or at Chanel boutiques and for a pretty penny at that.
My concern is that it being a bit harder (she does not like to shop online) to come across as well as more expensive, she might just shrug and think "oh, well," and I was really hoping to go for something that could be a signature for her to wear and cherish and keep coming back to (not that the regular Chanels aren't expensive, but they're less so and easier to find). So I guess my question is: if you guys have acquaintances who like perfume, want to smell good, but aren't necessarily super into it or fume-heads at all, do you think they would shell out for and seek out one of the Exclusifs (regularly) anyway? I'm worried with the set that she would just "play" with it while it's there, and then it would be forgotten and not really have meant all that much.

No. 19: Some of you guys have pointed out that while it is on the colder side, it's not "cruel" à la Cristalle, and is I guess maybe more unusual than No. 5. My concern here is that I keep reading reviews where it's described as a "mean witch of the forests" scent or a "boardroom bitch" perfume, and that gives me a little pause... I didn't want to give her something that had no warmth to it at all, because she is quite a warm person, albeit at times after her own way. I guess my question is: do you agree with those reviews? If I do go for 19, would you recommend the eau de parfum or the Poudré as I had originally thought or the eau de toilette?

Coco Noir: Some of you guys have said you didn't think Coco would fit the bill, but as I understand it Coco Noir is a bit of a different beast. Any thoughts on this one?

Others from the mainline: Someone recommended Allure. So I guess: outside of those I listed, are there any from the main line you would think better suited to her?

Thank you so much for the help!

Not a particular fan of others in the line (Allure, Coco noir, Coco mademoiselle, gabrielle), they all feel too mainstream-y, in one way or the other.

I wouldn't say no 19 is mean. I think any of the three formulation would do, with the edt being fresher, the edp heavier, and the poudre more casual.

Is your aunt’s name Mame? She sounds terrific!

I also like Quarry’s idea but if you want to stick to more accessible fragrances why not make up a “discovery set” of your own by getting samples of the ones on your list and presenting them to her in a gift box with a card promising to get her a bottle of the one she likes best? I’ll bet she would love exploring them all with you.

If you knew she enjoyed Chanel no 5, you could get her a vintage extrait. This with a Marilyn Monroe print would be an unforgettable gift.

She sounds like an interesting woman! From your list, one more for No 19.

I really do love the idea of the discovery set though... and FiveoaksBouquet’s suggestion is both a cost effective and fun way for her to try and decide what she likes. She sounds like she likes variety and new adventures, so having the choice of minis might actually be more appealing than a single bottle.

Are you set on Chanel? She sounds like someone who would wear Dryad wonderfully.

Wonderful ideas from Quarry and FiveoaksBouquet! Going by your description of your aunt, it sounds like she'd enjoy trying an assortment of perfumes and deciding for herself.

This was my thought as well. She sounds like a very free-spirited person with a clear sense of her individuality.

lf l had to choose a Chanel, it would be Allure. lt's the only Chanel that seems to work on me, & she & l have a lot of ideas in common.

I voted before I read your description. Poor order, I'm sorry. Subtract one vote from Coco and add one to 19.

I'm with Fiveoaks. Do a DIY discovery set, and include a note that you'll buy her a bottle of the one she likes best.

I just did a quick search and found one seller as an example of how you could easily get a variety of scents:
