If I understand your problem, what you're looking for is an unadulterated oud odour (synthetic or not) unencumbered by, for example, lots of rose or other smells - however lovely.

I've had the same urge, and to that end I've ordered a bottle of Montale 'Original Aoud'. It may be synthetic, but I'll get the smell without the expense of a pure oud oil.

Another cheap way in would be a bottle of Rasasi 'Faqat Lal Rijal', which will give you a lovely hit of funky oud for not much money. I love it.

Look up agar aura on web and Facebook, he sells small samples of real top grade oud that you can try to see what the smell is. If you follow him on FB you can also learn about oud and the many differences of types of oud.

I would think if I was looking for authentic oud (same with musk, as that is more my forte) to try these brands far before something from Gucci, Polo, or Versace. If you want the real deal there is no cheap way to do it.

Ive tried some ALD and Bortnikoffs and the oudiest thing so far has been Mysterious Oud. And it seemed that Bortnikoffs were a bit oudier than the ALDs. Caveat, this is not my domain, I've only tried a few and it could have just been my selections.

Check out Original Aoud by Montale for an inexpensive French style oud that's only oud and nothing else mixed in.

Why don't you just buy the real thing? Most of the mass-produced offerings will not contain any real oud whatsoever.

Are you looking for real oud in a perfume or pure oud oil?
For pure oud oil Agar Aura is my favorite.
For a perfume with real oud that you can smell I suggest Ilm by Kemi. Also the Oud Caravan series from La Via Del Profumo.

    Just buy some oud.

Very few fragrances use oud, as others have noted.

How about getting a sample of Frederic Malle 'The Night'?

When you smell it you'll certainly know what the 'authentic oud odour' is.

I have an idea, walk into a horse stable and take a long hard inhalation. When you smell it you'll certainly know what the 'authentic oud odour' is!

All jokes aside, oud is such a complex natural material that no two ouds smell exactly the same. The smell can range from fecal to a vinyl paint-like smell to woody to green to medicinal to herbal etc. That is the beautiful thing about oud, it's molecules are so complex that it can't be totally synthesised, syjthetic oud will only capture one facet of natural oud. It takes time to appreciate and accustom your sense of smell to the beauty of oud, occidental perfumery since the 1960s maybe has mostly been focused on producing that "fresh" clean smell, so you find little oud or a very refined more mass-appealing note of oud in Western perfumery. Only a few of the larger brands (Xerjoff, Roja, Frederic Malle, MFK etc.) are starting to be bolder with the use of oud, but their target audience is usually people in the Middle East and they come with a hefty price tag.

Funny how OPs search for authentic oud scents led him to the likes of Versace Oud and Polo Supreme Oud. Their SEOs must be pretty strong. Have you at least tried a genuine oud distillate? And which Indian and Middle Eastern oud brands did you sample from? Quite a number of them use adulterated oud oils of poor quality, as reflected in their low prices. If you truly want the genuine oud, know that these are rare tedious-to-process raw materials; you must be willing to pay its true price.

No doubt, fleecingly priced in petro-dollars.

+1. 'ILM is fantastic. It is droves of oud.

Also worthwhile checking out the Oud Lovers' section of this site. There's plenty of talk and direction on what ouds have what facets, where is good to get them for your area and some description on how to use attars too.
For Oud attars, I have a couple by Ensar Oud, a couple from Agarwood Assam and a portion of Xerjoff Kampuchea Noir (2.5mL). All are worlds apart from each other and have unique facets.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'd have even an approximate view of oud from the fragrances mentioned.

There's no secret, to get real oud, you have to get the big bucks outta the pocket. This list is basically what my suggestions would have been. I would suggest to go with
Rania J - Oud Assam since it's the best bang-for-the-buck imo (real strong oud, for "just" ~$130/50ml).

Should you have the possiblity, to the previous list, i would add

    Gucci - A Nocturnal Whisper
Gucci - The Voice Of The Snake (musk with strong oud support)
    Frederic Malle - The Night
Roja - Musk Aoud (Round Oud - not pungent - with strong musk support)
Montale - Aoud musk (the poor man's version of the Roja's. I own both and tested them side-by-side: Montale's is more musk with oud support than the opposite, but still they are very similar, and not sure if it is worth the price difference imho)

I would also suggest MFK Oud (extrait), and the currently cheap Elie Saab Essence n.4 Oud, that both clearly "smell of oud". Both blended by Kurkdjian, and he states he uses real oud oil. I could believe such statement, but obviously there are many qualities of oud (buaya oud is the cheapest, aka "white oud", and often just cited as "oud"), and just a drop of cheap oud oil per gallon of perfume would made this statement true, so...

Anyways, what is important, is to find an oud perfume meeting your expectations, not to know precisely what is in, because even at very high prices (Bortnikoff, Areej...), we'll never have any clue of that (aside of the perfume houses statements, of course).
