Default Sephora to close all its US stores June 5th

    ....for "diversity training".

The Sephora beauty chain will close all its US stores, distribution centers and corporate offices on Wednesday to conduct diversity training for employees, after a racial incident involving a Grammy-nominated singer.

R&B singer SZA, who is black, said in April she was racially profiled at a Sephora store in Calabasas, California.

“We have been informed of an incident at our Calabasas store and in addition to reaching out to SZA directly, we are gathering more information about the incident in order to take the proper next steps,” Emily Shapiro, a spokeswoman for Sephora, told Reuters in an email. “We take complaints like this very seriously, profiling on the basis of race is not tolerated at Sephora.“

SZA said a Sephora employee she identified as “Sandy” called security to make sure the singer was not stealing from the store. “We had a long talk. U have a blessed day Sandy,” SZA said in a Twitter post.

In all seriousness, they could easily tackle this matter just by doing some training hours before opening or spread it out over a few weeks. But they do the store close as more of a publicity thing to make themselves look better.

They are intentionally making it public that they are doing "diversity training" because they think it will get them more business.

It might just bring them less business. When will companies ever learn to stay out of politics.

Why would learning to make customers more comfortable bring a company less business? Why is learning good customer service political?

Remember when Starbucks did the exact same thing exactly a year ago? Yeah, me neither.
This is just an exercise in corporate damage control PR bullshit, nothing's gonna change by shutting down a bunch of stores once in a lifetime for a couple of hours of pep talk.

Sephora ought to address the issue of avoiding to place their fragrance bottles on those warms rack stands with light shining directly at it.

I find this very shameful on their part.

We used to have stand downs base-wide or ship-wide to address a serious problem once in a while when I was in the Navy 40 years ago, so the idea isn't novel to me at all that companies would use a similar method to address a problem.

I suspect it is easier to agree with a star's claim of racial profiling ("the customer is always right"), than to admit a bad case of mostly behavioral profiling. Former employee and star is going to be extremely casual with the merch. Poorly trained employee sees it and jumps the gun, assumes the worst. "AND SHE HAD BIG HAIR!" Company goes with the media flow rather than getting picky about the error. Cover the employee legally to bind them and shut them up, mea culpa to the star, sign them to some deal as a win-win, instead of a legal drama. Media clergy fawns over socially proper moves, everybody is happy again in Beautyville, where nothing bad happens, or if it does, a massive infusion of hugs leads to a happier ending with even more hugs.

Sorry, I would be cynical, except Beauty remains like some weirdly innocent eye in the massive storm of everything else. The gentle winds of "whatever - we'll admit to it - let's have a hug" are almost refreshing.

Agree, they are ruining the fragrances you don’t need shiny lights to show off a fragrance box. One Ulta by me doesn’t have lighting on their shelves the other two Ulta’s near me do not sure why the big craze for it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sephora did close all its locations in the near future because the chain feels outdated to me with the online shopping I’ve done from various sites, for fragrance and other. I feel like its time has passed, but that could be me. I understand my shopping habits may not reflect the shopping habits of the general public, although I’ve noticed there is a growing sector of people with my tastes.
Yeah, I think one of the people (at the top) in charge of the Sephora corporation (not sure if it was their CEO or not..might have been) once said something like they don't really want their customers only shopping online on their website, the reason being that in order to keep physical store locations in malls open, people actually have to be making purchases from those stores as well. Of course..maybe they should have good customer service in store in that case! XD

Could be, but whenever I hear about things like this, I figure it's mostly a defensive action.

So that if someone tries to sue them, they can trot out the fact that hey; they did all this training, so how could they ( the company itself ) possibly be at fault ?

And here I assumed that Sephora practiced equal-opportunity lousy and utterly uninformed customer service. (That said, its brand of incompetence often represents a step up from the insolence that serves as customer service in the astral plane of many boutiques.) Would I whip myself into a merengue of indignation of someone called security on me? I rather hope that I calmly would take the opportunity to make fools of the store and its personnel -- which is precisely what SZA did exceedingly well. Chapeau!

So are stores no longer allowed to safeguard their merchandise? If a store watches a suspicious looking person that is racist?

Remember when Winona Ryder was caught shoplifting? There have been others. It is obvious that wealthy celebrities aren't immune to being thieves.

You never know what any particular employee is going to do, but if you make it clear they were trained properly, the burden of responsibility shifts to the employee if he/she does something inappropriate, presumably. That is my guess as to why it might make sense for big companies to do this sort of thing.

Yes, this makes sense. Lose the battle, win the war. Future attempts to cast behavioral profiling as racial, whether honest mistakes or alibis, will have much less chance of getting past the initial accusation. Even employees will learn they need to stay on behavior, which is where the law protects them, and where management and customers want them. Arguments return to facts, not prejudices or mantras. Overall, smart, if played correctly. The key point is playing the stronger hand in the future and winning - not folding automatically on an accusation.

Every corporate company has diversity training. Probably some 15 minute video or something. Probably gets glossed over without major focus, until things like this happen. Then they have to make a show of it to try to save face and show ethical growth.

Our human resources rep comes to my facility once a year and we watch the same video every year.

This is a good point too! I am acquainted with at least one guy who once said he suspected Sephora employees are really racist too, because he didn't like the way they treated his wife (who is Asian) when she went in one of their stores. Or something like that supposedly. What I said to him at the time was, "yeah, but they hire a lot of people who aren't white!" (As sales associates and makeup artists, etc., not as shelf stockers or cleaners or people who work in some dark warehouse somewhere!) So, yeah..the argument that their "front line" staff need all this "diversity training" just doesn't hold water to me either! I feel the same way about Starbucks, and the whole fiasco where they called the cops on some African American guy too because they thought he seemed shifty. They closed down for one whole day for diversity training too!
