    Default Perfume Calligraphy by Aramis

    Screen Shot 2019-06-03 at 3.12.04 PM.jpgScreen Shot 2019-06-03 at 3.11.46 PM.jpg

Recently bought Perfume Calligraphy by Aramis based on the comparison with BTV Blue Sapphire. I've got the classical Aramis bottle one but then realized there is another taller bottle. Any differences between the composition between the two different bottles. thanks for any input.

There is a complicated story I covered in my review that I'll recap here.

Aramis Perfume Calligraphy was originally meant as a limited-edition Middle East-only release from Estée Lauder to draw in a new market. It was unisex because the Aramis name had no association with men there and the packaging was the deluxe woodcap that you see. Neiman's, which carries Lauder and at the time also carried the Gentleman's Collection reissues from Aramis, wanted to exclusively carry Perfume Calligraphy for the US. Because of the Aramis association with masculine buyers, Lauder put the US juice in the typical Aramis Gentleman's Collection bottle and marketed it to men.

The scent had some success during the Western oud craze (although it contains very little oud synthetic or otherwise), so the US kept receiving the Aramis Gentleman's Collection bottles long after the woodcap version in the Middle East sold out, and eventually other perfume shops outside of Neiman's could order it (but it was never in a store like Macy's). Technically it's discontinued in any form as it was a niche-level priced limited release to begin with, but if they have started making it again, there wouldn't likely be changes as it didn't have anything like oakmoss in it. The Neiman's chrome cap tester and my woodcap smelled the same to me.

What makes this more confusing is the rose and saffron flankers never got officially launched in the US, so there are no chrome "Gentleman's Collection" bottles of those two, just the Middle East woodcaps, but Neiman's again got to sell some of those here. I guess Lauder didn't feel like doing a separate bottling run of those two since the original never sold completely out and still floods the US grey market discounters in the Aramis bottle. The Woodcap version is more rare and people will swear it smells better, but you're gonna pay stupid prices for it ($145-$199) from fleecers capitalizing on fumies like us having collector's lust.

    Hope that helps.

Hats off to Z.C. for an excellent explanation on this. I have Calligraphy, Rose and Saffron and always wondered why the Calligraphy bottle was different from the other two.

Aramis Life and Aramis Always were also released in the Gentleman's Collection bottles but only in Europe, making it all the more confusing. Aramis as a house seemingly has no direction (or poor direction) and doesn't even have a shoppable website like sister brand Clinique and the standard Estée Lauder line.

Whereas all three perfumes are in the same style bottle for me - a superb trio of scents.

I'm impressed, I have a sample of BTV Blue sapphire and after applying it on one arm and Calligraphy on the other I was blown away by how similar they are.

I certainly enjoy the saffron version, and remember being interested in it when it first came out.

I picked up a bottle on the Bay about six months ago for $44, after going though a 5 mil sample. But at some point it's likely the prices will rise.

One other nice thing - As a limited release that's been discontinued, you don't have to worry about reformulations.

Great info ZC, I had wondered the backstory of these uber niched out compositions and how they ended up being quite so amazing.

I have decants of all three on the way. Looking forward to sampling them.

For the most part it was a failed experiment because Middle East market just ended up buying all the Tom Ford Private Blend stuff which was even higher margin than these were (Lauder owns TF as well), so offering the Aramis nameplate to them ended up being a waste. Seems Western buyers liked these more. I own all three and agree they're great but from the perspective of a culture used to real oud, rose, amber, patchouli, and saffron attars, I can see how these were probably looked upon as the McDonald's version of that. Tom Ford did nothing to earn the Middle East market, and the stuff just sold on the clout of the brand alone. Funny, that.
