Default Suggestions To Add to a Beginner's "Collection"?

    Hi everyone,

I just recently got sucked into the "hobby" of fragrances. In the past I always had A fragrance, but it was simply just like Polo Red, when that ran out then Polo Black. Never really more than one scent at a time. A couple years ago I bought myself ADG (the normal one...sigh) and then got La Male as a Christmas gift a year later. Those have been the two I've had up until recently when I got sucked in. I enjoy them both, but wanted to expand, and particularly get a few good summer scents (I live in Michigan and it is FINALLY summer here). So, that's a bit of my history up until now.

Over the past month or two I picked up:
    Aqua Amara
    Light Blue Sun
Gucci Pour Homme II (absolutely love)
Uomo Casual Life (regrettable blind buy, but it was cheap)

I have also been buying quite a few decants. In decants I have:
    Prada L'homme
    Prada Luna Rosa Carbon
    Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche
    Mugler Cologne
    Coach for Men
    Dunhill Icon
    John Varvatos Artisan Pure
Parfums de Marly Layton (just had to give it a sniff).

I enjoy most of these. Out of all of them however, the two I like the most are the two Prada's, however I feel they are almost too similar to warrant purchasing both (am I wrong?). Artisan Pure and Edition Blanche seem fairly close to Aqua Amara (Artisan Pure more than Edition Blanche, as Edition Blanche smells more fresh than either), so for this year I think I will pass. I really like Coach for Men, but I sort of compare it a bit to Luna Rosa Carbon in terms of where it would sit in a smaller collection, and if I had to buy one I would lean towards Carbon. Mugler Cologne, while good, I don't like it enough to need it, and I would put Dunhill Icon in that same category. And, Layton...amazing, but out of my price range at the moment.

So, if you couldn't tell, I was basing my buys off what was suggested from various YouTubers (good way to cure work boredom). They all seem very safe. I am coming here to see if there is a fragrance I am missing for a summer collection, or even a great all season all occasion fragrance that would compliment what I have already purchased. I would love something that isn't going to smell like anyone else. Also something that can sit in my small "collection" that can work differently than what I have already.

Like I said before, I am very new to this game. I am only assuming there are "areas" of scents that I am missing for Summer. However, if you feel that I have covered my bases with what I already have, or could fill with purchasing a big bottle of one of the decants I have, please do feel free to say that as well.

Some info about my self that may help:
    I'm 28
Work in a temperature controlled office setting
Not your typical 'hipster' but I do like to be a bit different or bold with clothing/hair styles
I don't go out to clubs or bars often, but will hang out with friends on the weekends.
My budget would be under $100 (unless I got a decant of something that I absolutely must have, I could splurge a little, just not like $200+)

Sorry for the long winded post. I really appreciate anyone whose given the time to read it and give any suggestions!

I suggest boldly stepping outside the norm of men wearing “men’s” fragrances. In spring and summer I like to wear clean, fresh, greenish light florals. My favorite is Tommy Girl. Another direction that screams summer is Bronze Goddess by Estée Lauder (a beach tropical vacation scent). I think everybody should have a large bottle of 4711 even if the moment only lasts a moment. And Ferrari Bright Neroli always puts a smile on my face.

Given your price range and age, all of these would be good options that don't duplicate anything you already own:

    Bvlgari Man Black Orient
    Cartier L'Envol EDP
    West Third Brand Tobacco 1812

Prada l'homme has a touch of iris (which Luna Rossa doesn't) so perhaps you can try other perfumes that have a touch of iris, like the Dior Homme range. For the summer, you can check Dior Homme l'eau and dior homme cologne, both rather fresh.

Good startup collection! For summer, go sample Dior Homme, Homme Intense, and Eau Sauvage!

Im gonna go outside the box on suggestion, but keep it inside the box for fragrance type.

Go to Maison Francis Kurdjian online. Buy a 4 pack of samples. It will be like 15 bucks. These are nice big 2ml i believe samples. Try:
    Aqua universalis
    Aqua celeste
    APOM
    and something else.
Best 15 bucks spent in the game.

Edit: I picked those scents based on your stated tastes. Not necesarily my favvorites of the line.

+1 on the Dior Homme range. Seems to fit both your profile and your taste. If you are still in the process of learning your likes, then I thoroughly recommend Atelier’s discovery set. It’s no longer the steal it used to be, but it is still a good deal. You get to try out a bunch of different fragrances and it’s free of charge if you decide to spring for a full bottle. Might be a bit out of budget, but worth considering.

Try buying a decants of Creed Virgin Island Water, Millesime Imperial or Silver Mountain Water, even if full bottles are out of your price range, you still can get decants at a very affordable price here, on BaseNotes.
Alternatively you can get Bleu de Chanel, test all of them - EdT, EdP and Perfum to see which one you like the most, since there are no general consensus on which one is better. Personally I prefer EdP

If you like L'Homme, try these from Prada - Amber pour Homme, Amber pour Homme Intense and Infusion d'Iris Cedre.
Try a couple of Narciso Rodriguez scents - for Him EdT and for Him EdP.

For something different and all-purpose but great in summers - Kiehl's Musk, if you like musk. Aqua Amara and Gucci pour Homme II are two good ones.

For something different, try Egoiste, Antaeus, Dior Homme Intense, Le 3me Homme de Caron and Fahrenheit.

A lot of great suggestions here. I'll add on to the recommendations for Bleu de Chanel and the Dior Homme line. There is nothing in the Dior Homme lineup that I do not like, and I have more from this house than any other designer.

    Good luck and happy sniffing.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions! I definitely have a lot to look into and will probably be looking to get decants of some of those, and I will for sure look into the discovery sets mentioned above as well.

Can you point me to where to buy decants here? I have been buying mainly from Decant Boutique.

Based on what you have I think you would probably like Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme or LaNuit as well. Both good scents.

Get a bottle each of Layton, Oajan, Herod, Carlisle, and perhaps Pegasus.

I was thinking about trying their discovery set after getting my decant of Layton. But, unfortunately I don't have a grand just lying around to drop on cologne lol.

(Prada L'Homme & Luna Rossa Carbon)

You are wrong about them being quite similar. Only you can say what you would like and purchase.

Then you've said "Artisan Pure and Edition Blanche seem fairly close to Aqua Amara" and those three all are different, I think people will have trouble recommending things to you as it's not clear that you see much difference when there clearly is. Perhaps though you aren't too choosy and hence will like lots of things.

Well, that's why I am here asking. I know that they are all different. I guess would a similar "DNA" be a better way to describe L'homme and Luna Rosa Carbon? They just seem close to me, but L'homme being more sweet and powdery. After wearing both this week, I definitely like L'homme more for the office.

I should have said Artisan Pure is close to Aqua Amara to me in that they are both more creative citrus cents, while Edition Blanche and Light Blue Sun are closer in a more fresh citrus cent.

I have just started out diving deeper into this world of fragrances. I don't really know what to look for when smelling different notes in various fragrances. So yeah, I don't really know what I like or dislike right now, and I am not too choosy. That is what brought me here, to get recommendations on what to try to get a more diverse taste of fragrances. I just thought that adding what scents I have right now, and which ones of those I liked best would maybe help a bit.

I agree with those who've suggested the Dior Homme line and I'll add Amouage is a house worth exploring.
