Default Help needed: Guerlain Vetiver or Tsar VC&A?

    Hello,
The thing is: I have the opportunity to buy one of them at a very good price (current formulation, brand new, sealed, etc). My budget not allows to buy booth.
I always follow my taste in these cases; I decide for what I really like.
So, where is the problem? No chance to test the Tsar. Close box and no tester. And i´m not finding it in any place.
I tried the Guerlain and I loved it.
But: Could I be missing something special with VC&A?
    Thanks!
    Best,
    BruceB

I'd go with the Guerlain. You've tried it and you loved it.

The Tsar is discontinued so if you're afraid to miss out, that would be your only driving force to buy. Otherwise, the vetiver is a better option.

    Very true. Guerlain is winning...
I just read your great Tsar review and I guess (just guessing) it would probably be a scent not so far away of Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, wich I own two bottles. Correct me if Im wrong.
    Thank you!

Guerlain Vetiver is the better choice of the two.

Tsar (which I'm wearing right now) is more interesting, but Vetiver is just plain good and very versatile. Getting both is the best option, but since that isn't possible for you, then I'd go with the Guerlain since you've tried in and love it.

Also wearing Tsar today, almost had forgotten how good it is.

I'd say you should get both but if you really only can get one, get the one that you've already tried.

The Guerlain is a staple, which may be more relevant in your situation, but, to me, the Tsar has more personality, particularly if you can find the older formulation in the opaque bottle.

I haven't paid attention recently, and now see it going for around $100 on eBay when only a few years ago it was under $30 online. Vintage versions are fetching upwards of $200.

Since the Guerlain can be found for $30 online it's no contest.

Personally happening to enjoy both and likely to at some point own both, would recommend (in spite of currently owning and using Guerlain Vetiver or maybe because of it) by a minimal margin Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels, perhaps due to being slightly fresher, less powdery and formalized, less conservatively Old School, though both are timelessly classic, somewhat easier to fit into an everyday/office wear fragrance selection

Tsar personally hasn't enthralled me - spiky ice cool green.

Tsar is much greener and sportier than Paco Rabanne, replacing the soap factor with a more-complex aromatic subset. It's nice but also a bit loud. Now that it's discontinued, the hype train will make it out to be a legendary masterpiece lost to the tragedy of changing styles, violins and clenched fists. In reality, it's a good fougère, but if you're armed up on fougères like Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, you won't 100% need Tsar. Calvin Klein Truth for Men sorta does a similar trick but with 2000's transparency in place of 80's density, for what it's worth. Guerlain Vetiver is the reference for all modern vetivers on the other hand, being only a bit "dated" compared to something like Tom Ford Grey Vetiver or Encre Noir by Lalique for using a dry bergamot and tobacco treatment. Otherwise, it's still more relevant than most other vetivers on the market even after almost 60 years in production, it's that good.

It's rising to unicorn status rather quickly because its discontinuation had less to do with popularity and more to do with VC&A repositioning their perfumes in the prestige/niche tier and needing to axe all vestiges of their old designer standing.

Finally, I went to the shop decided to buy both and eat rice and bread for 10 days...
The Tsar: Triple price. Guerlain: no more in stock.

The good news: I´ll buy only one (Guerlain) and eat properly.

Thanks again for the time and the advices.

    Very possible!
But, you know? I´ll keep posting this questions because destiny put in my hands Opium instead one of those other two.
Don´t mind the unicorns (Tsar). GV? Some other day.

I'm a Tsar man, I love all the Tsar versions, 1st and 3rd formulations and also the flanker Eau Tsar, now Tsar might not be around much longer and the longer u wanna wait might be pricey, I never tried the other cologne u said u love, but I assure , Tsar is a very lovely smell, if u wanna try a sample of them , they sell em on ebay a 7ml splash bottle for like 10$ or less or more depending, some of them are selling 2 bottles at a time ,so if u wanna try and not spend the money , u can buy it cheap and u decide , 7ml bottle are boxed and sealed so that's a good thing and it's the 1st version, not if u decide to buy the big bottles the 1st version and 3rd versions are going anywhere from 60-100$ that's on the decent price on ebay and Amazon are just Robbin ppl selling them 150-500$ 50-100ml bottle , which is ridiculously pricey, i never shop on Amazon I don't know I'm more older smelling guy, Aramis is also my favorite and I'm tryna get the Aramis Tabacoo reserve , which I heard is better then Tom ford Tabacoo Vanille for less money paco rabanne I don't think is better but it's similar, polo green is also similar to tsar , I like layer my polo with tsar very good smell, I'm gonna research on your cologne and see what I think maybe I'll give it a shot
