Default How bad have I messed up?

    Good Evening All,

It's been quite a while since I last logged in 2012 or so according to my activity log.

I have a humble scent wardrobe and due to life circumstances and sheer complacency on my part, my entire collection ended up in the fridge when the wine chiller died.....The scents have been tucked in the back corner at about 38 degrees fahrenheit give or take a few degrees for roughly 7 or 8 years. Some things smell okay.....some not so okay. I am wondering how much damage I have done? It's a little hard to tell for sure right now as I got a little trigger happy trying to inspect each one and my kitchen now smells like someone spilled A LOT of perfume.

    Thank you for your assistance!!

    Bobby

They might be fine. Let 'em sit at room temp for a few days, shake the bottles a bit, and test.

I think you're fine. Nothing to worry about

Those would be my thoughts, as well.

Thank you all for the replies. If they do end up being okay, would it be best to just keep them chilled? In other words, since they have lived in the fridge for so long, would it be detrimental to start storing them at room temperature? Maintaining a constant temp and humidity level would be an issue. My lovely wife hates A/C and I very much enjoy it, lol.

I can't think of any reason why that would be the case.

It's easy to overthink this stuff. As long as your home isn't excessively warm, you'll probably be fine.

Thank you. I have a tendency to overthink a lot of stuff.....it's been an interesting ride to say the least. Just so I am clear, would the recommendation be to start storing them at room temp or just leave well enough alone and leave them in the fridge?

Store at room temp, in a dark space away from direct sunlight.

This! You have nothing to fear from ambient room temperature, AC or no. Sunlight is their biggest threat.

You did good storing them in a cool place, the opposite would have been detrimental.

Thank you. I knew heat was not a friend to most scents. I just wasn't sure if it was detrimental to be in the fridge for so long.

In many (more or less similar) situations/cases mentioned and discussed here on BN, room temperature is usually just enough and fairly suitable for unproblematic long term fragrance storage, even with no additional refrigeration and/or air conditioning.

Would only worry if the bottled would have been exposed to any further and more radical factors of outer damage, that would affect fragrances even without the wine chiller/fridge breaking down or failing, including especially but not limited to heat, strong mechanical shocks, lack of even minimal ventilation, extreme fluctuations of moisture and/or temperature (but only if so strong, up to being able to harm more sturdy, shock resistant materials/items almost instantly - which can be highly unlikely).

But other than most or all these happening AND happening (nearly) at the same time, tending to agree-as previous posters have correctly pointed out-that your fragrances are quite likely unharmed and just fine.

Thank you all very much. I broke out the Creed Original Vetiver today and it seemed to have survived unscathed! Only way to find out is to try them on.

Right, just try them and allow your nose time to "recover" between each one (several hours, or even a full day, if you want to be extra sure). I'm glad to hear that your Creed Original Vetiver is fine, and I'll bet the others are, too.

Yeah, cold storage is okay, but make sure things return to normal before use.

Thank you everyone! So far so good on everything. I was a little concerned about the Chergui, but it seems to have survived as well. Will keep testing!

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) used to come to our house and there was perspiration upon his body. My mother brought a bottle and began to pour the sweat in that. When Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) got up he said:

Umm Sulaim, what is this that you are doing? Thereupon she said: That is your sweat which we mix in our perfume and it becomes the most fragrant perfume.
