Cool Fragrances With a Free Gift

Who among us has been lured into or been talked into buying by way of a free gift with purchase? I'm not talking about gift sets that include a shower gel or lotion. I mean like a free bag, or an extra sample kit, beach towel, bowling ball, t-shirt, etc.
I must raise my hand! I wouldn't say I've fallen victim as I have taken advantage of them. Just last month, I bought my son a fragrance which came with a free duffel bag, which he also needed. So I killed two birds, in a scents. haha

So far, have had fairly decent experiences with the following free gifts (most, if not all of these in the affordable price category):

    - a free envelope/ ase for IPad (possibly also non Apple) tablets with Mugler Cologne

    - free deo spray with Caractere by Daniel Hechter

    - a free scent miniature and a full sized shower gel with Roberto Capucci pour Homme

    - free wristwatches (shockingly plural, however admittedly also in the inexpensive price categories ) with several Yves Rocher perfumes

    - free bar soaps with Je Reviens by Worth

    - finally but definitely not least, free perfume and/or cosmetic product samples with most and also steadily frequent/increasing both online and offline retailers did buy full sized fragrances from, if and while increasingly becoming a fairly increasing turnover and steady customer

Have been tempted on occassion when I wanted something that ALSO had a free holdall.
BTW are they any good - holdalls are often gifted with certain products from certain retailers?

As a matter of fact, I have. I’m such a sucker for smart, preppy looking leather/canvas holdalls and have in the past got them with fragrance purchases from Ralph Lauren, Bvlgari and Zegna. Only 1 condition however: I must like the fragrance.

I've done it with a couple of Estee Lauders-I would have got them anyway but waited for the gift with purchase.

If I ever buy a fragrance at full price at a dept store, I will ask them to load up on the samples of my choice. I mean , really load up.

Oy vey, this reminds me of being in high school and having my charmingly "simple" father take me to Macy's and hearing him tell the sales associate "I only buy fragrances that come with a free bag"

If they don't cost any more than just purchasing the bottle itself then sure. Haven't made any of these purchases in a long time.

I havent been able to. Nordstrom or Neiman's usually just stuffs the bag with whatever before I say anything. Got a wool throw for the couch that way.

I have never bought fragrances at retail just to get a free gift, but I do have several free bags from purchases I would have made anyway. I think it's a nice touch.

Never been tempted. Now I have bought and did not realize I would get something free. I just give away as no interest in them.

Only if I was going to make a purchase anyway. Last week I got an e-mail ad - "a free case for a purchase", and I planed to do a purchase at the end of the month any way, so I went for it

I bought a bottle of A*Men once, the Mugler toiletry bag that came with it certainly seemed like a good idea. It looked alright and was quite large alas the quality was terrible and the zipper broke very quickly. Which reminds me, I also bought a Bulgari (pour Homme or something similar) that came with a toiletry bag. Wasn't very nice or too small, can't remember. Think I gave it away. Oh, and I've got (yeah, there seems to be a pattern here) this slightly weird, white, leathery toiletry bag that I believe came with a bottle of Oscar de la Renta.

All just e-bay purchases though and items that I was interested in anyway.

I would imagine most of the free gifts are pretty low quality, especially nowadays. However, back in 94 or 95, my Polo Sport came with a very large gym bag. I used it regularly all the way till two years ago. The material finally started to tear so I had to throw it out.

Yes, not very appealing at all.

And another things I've noticed is these 'free items' are going on sale on ebay as designer bags and whatnot. I'm guessing the bags that are made as free giveaways are not of the same quality as the bags that are actually on the shelf, though I could be wrong.

I bought Explorer at Macy's and the sales lady was very cool, included a handful of carded samples and what looked like a nice stadium blanket.
I didn't like the fragrance and returned it a day or two later, along with the blanket. I could have kept it but just didn't feel right since I was returning my purchase...

I've seen the towel giveaway. Mont Blanc should be giving away something more evocative of the word Explorer, rather than a beach towel/or blanket. I expected their free gift to be something more tactical or rugged/outdoor related.

I love skincare so if the perfume has a skincare/makeup line - I'm all for it. Chanel is great for this, plus throwing loads of free makeup samples in the bag too. Estee Lauder and Sisley too. You know what I love MORE? Perfume samples!

When I shopped at Selfridges I made one perfume purchase and walked out with five really great sized samples. Help that I chatted with the SA and he was happy I knew what I wanted and researched before coming.

I don't care for makeup bags or pouches, got loads of those.

Me too. If I am making a purchase, I feel much more entitled to ask for a plethora of samples.

    A long time ago...
I used to buy Aramis when you would receive a free umbrella with purchase! I still have two of them and they still work. They were quality gifts.

I used to buy Mugler, but Russel is right, the quality of their gifts can be terrible. The ‘leather’ bags are plastic and cheap. I’m very disappointed by Mugler these days.

Gaultier. I love his gifts, but unfortunately Le Male has suffered and doesn’t smell anything like it used to. The last gift I had was a duffel/gym bag, and I love it.

I don’t tend to like the fragrances that offer other gifts, but I thought the towels (were they Armani?) were a nice idea, for the gym again.

Niche fragrances, regrettably, don’t offer gifts. But some stores will give you a generous number of samples.
