It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

I'll do ones I've owned full bottles of, rather than just smelled.

Brut - forgot I owned this until thinking about it now but I did, briefly, when I was like 14 as an aftershave splash hahaha. Must have worn it at least a few times, don't really remember enjoying it, but it's probably up there. Don't remember what happened to it, definitely didnt finish it. Probably smashed the bottle as I don't think I threw it away. Not something I'd wish to buy now...or probably ever.
Trumper Spanish Leather - wonderful, classic, masculine cologne. Bought when 19/20, so again, a solid masculine old school scent at a young age. There's rose in there but, as a whole, smells like a masculine man.
Tom Ford Tobacco Oud - it's too easy to pick vintage scents and I could keep going down that aftershave-esque route so here's something more modern. Whisky opening, tobacco heart, a touch of oud, some spice, lots of heat, a bit of amber. Smells like a man.
Lalique Encre Noire - purely for the dirt and depth of this fragrance, it's the empitome of an aspect of masculinity. No idea how some women say they wear this. Apparently reformulated to be much brighter but the bottle I owned was dank, dark, and dirty-soily woods. Nothing feminine about that whatsoever.
Cipresso di Toscana - again, too easy to go down the dark, deep, musty route of TO and EN. So for a masculine 'bright' scent, I could have gone for Caron Sport, which smells incredibly masculine in a bright way to me. But I went with bright woods instead. The counerpoint to EN, and with some old school appeal as well.

One thing I think that comes from this - and is actually something I, and surely a lot of people, would recognise is mirrored in wider society - is that a sense of masculinity is rooted in the past. As in, for modern men, masculinity is actually absent. Sometimes, it's barely catered to in the slightest, with all the gourmands that litter the male fragrance world. Likewise, work and professions, socialisation and communal values, clothing and appearance, and perhaps wider things like ethics and morals on a personal basis; all of these notions of what is deemed masculine seem absent. And I think that's echoed through perfumery.

To add a modern take on masculinity, which isn't heavily inspired by either masculine 'things' or old school scents, I'd go for a few obvious ones:

Sauvage and its synthetic blue scents that lean on the aquatics of yesteryear with their freshness.
I'd also say Aventus and it's similar, but more retro cousin, TdHermes.

All of these I have owned and, in their way, are unambiguously masculine as well. Just not in the same way.

I'm not saying it's my favorite, but this thing is a bracing, explosive blast of aromatic masculinity.

Some great lists here, has made good reading so far. Here’s a list avoiding overlaps:

Tom Ford for Men, deliberately formulated for this question.

Roja Fetish Pour Homme or it’s friendlier designer equivalent, Hermes Bel Ami

    Bottega Venetta Pour Homme

    Nasomatto Duro

    Frederic Malle Monsieur

It's relatively cheap and accessible here in the UK, but not sure for the USA.

If you want to try them out, I believe they sell small 30ml packs of their fragrances, but they're quite dear. Maybe try ebay for those.

However, they sell 50ml of their fragrances in glass bottles for £41, and 500ml in a plastic bottle for £61. Needless to say, if you want to get value for money, I'd recommend the latter...!

TF Extreme is an interesting, original answer. I remember the first time I smelled it it immediately reminded me of a very wealthy businessman, in a suit, on a private jet reading The Atlantic with one leg crossed over the other, showing off some very expensive, highly polished Oxfords. The image or thought or whatever it was was instantaneous and precise. I haven’t smelled it since. Good choice.
