Default Beau de Jour to become part of Tom Ford's signature line?

Read this in another thread, so although these topics can be anathema to the website when lacking any robust evidence, I'm on the cusp of buying a bottle so would quite like to know if there's any validity behind this?

I really don't know so I will check back on this thread with interest. All I can say it is a great scent.

This rumor came from someone posting on reddit claiming they've heard it from a sales associate. All I can say is every rumor I have read about Tom Ford's fragrances in the last two years has come true; it does not appear that the Tom Ford brand cares about being tight lipped on future plays. I personally believe it is very likely.

I would've considered this to extremely unlikely, if not impossible; but I wouldn't, given how it all played out with Ombre Leather.

    Thanks, interesting stuff.

I've yet to try either Ombre Leather but is the general consensus they're 'the same'?

If so, and if the signature line manages to capture the beautiful herbal-amber drydown of Beau de Jour, I'll hang back on buying a bottle now in the hope it'll be coming out at a better price.

I wonder if the decision to release it is due to sales (good or bad) or simply TF himself. I read a recent-ish interview with him and it stated he was wearing BdJ, so presumably it's one he enjoys personally. Maybe this is part of his crusade to add another proper masculine scent to his more affordable fragrances, which didn't really happen between the original Tom Fords and TFExtreme and Noir Anthracite. BdJ basically sums Tom Ford up - 70s and 80s with a modern sexiness. Makes sense he'd make it a flagship in that case.

And totally agree about TF's direction as a marketing/sales dept, which seems to not give a shit about rumours: if anything, the rumours help fuel the interest. Likewise, it seems they don't really care about concision either - so many scents, so little time.

Nevertheless, an odd decision to have so many green scents - from Fougere to Vert. If this decision has been made so soon after release, I think they just need to slow down. Were they anticipating disruption with Brexit? Did they rush to market? God knows, but I'd happily see the Private Blend stuff slow down so they're able to focus on scents like this becoming signature line scents from the off...if that is what's about to happen.

I really hope this is true. I have not tested Beau de Jour yet, but it would be great to have more choices in the Signature line.

The only thing I notice that's different between Private Blend and Signature is the lack of a certain kind of DNA in the latter which is in many of the PBs.

Which, if the Ombre Leathers are so similar, begs the question: what are they doing to justify the extra cost? And yeah, that's a rhetorical question haha...

The PBs are generally designed to be BIG CENTRAL ACCORD with a bit of background ornamentation to give it some uplift. The Signature releases are a bit more well-rounded, often skewing more "ambient."

But now that TF is starting to offer "wide release" variants of handpicked PB releases, the differences between the lines are starting to get blurrier.

It would be nice to extend more Private Blends into the Signature line, but I'm surprised this notion would come so soon for Beau de Jour. Ombre Leather 16 was completely off-market for some time before being brought back.

At the same time, we're seeing even more stratification with more exclusive releases from Tom Ford at similarly exclusive price points. I haven't bought anything Tom Ford, even discounted, for quite a while now.

That’s probably good news, assuming it retails for a lot less. Meanwhile the discontinued original PB version will likely acquire the coveted ‘unicorn’ status and trade for big moolah on eBay.

From the first time I heard the rumour about Ombre Leather 16 being released in the Signature line until it was released, it took about two years. So expect to wait two more years if the rumours about Beau de Jour are true.

I agree about that. I have not bought anything new from Tom Ford for ages. Many of the new releases seem interesting, but the prices are just out of my league. That is why I hope for new releases in the Signature line, Beau de Jour or otherwise.

If it does come out in 2 years' time, is it reasonable to expect a name change? By and large, including even their Noir range, their signature scents have eschewed the more...hmmmm...'artistic' names the PB line has gone for.

You can get away with Noir + suffix, and maybe even Ombre Leather, as it's pretty clear what leather is and Noir at least gives a solid hint about the style for English speaking consumers. But Beau de Jour? There's absolutely no indication what this scent will be about, really. You could say the same is true for the others but...I dunno. The name works well for PB, but if this IS going to be aimed at a wider, less specialist portion of the market, I feel like they're missing something by not making it more immediately obvious about what's inside the bottle.

Alternatively, working on the basis that this IS going to happen, could Rive Gauche's discontinuation have forced their hand? Or rather, they saw a gap in the market and they're going for it? That seems reasonable to me - but I don't know. Would decisions like this work that quickly? I imagine probably not.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn that Tom Ford has some personal drive to keep Rive Gauche alive and is doing this in part as a response to YSL's mismanagement of it.

Aren't we fragheads silly creatures sometimes? Chasing trophies when there are so many good smells out there that don't require the help of Indiana Jones to obtain?

Tom Ford was the reason YSL made anything at all that wasn't dialed into consumerist drivel accords. Look at what they were doing for men's fragrance before before he arrived: The Jazz series (good but plain across the board), and Opium Pour Homme, which basically smelled like a furrher refinement of Jazz Prestige.

They were out of creative gas and the late Yves Saint Laurent knew it. He hated Tom Ford's retro-chic aesthetic (Laurent was always moving forward), but he even admitted "the man does what he can" in regards to YSL's revitalization under Ford's leadership. As soon as Ford left LVMH, and the group sold the beauty division to L'Oreal, they went RIGHT BACK to chasing mainstream accords just like they had in the 90's.

Granted, the 90's YSL still beats the pants off of bloated L'Homme series (the core entries of which I begrudgingly like), but I'm honestly surprised there's any La Collection at all, and know someday not too far from now, YSL PH and Jazz will be gone too. Tom Ford bringing Beau de Jour to the signature line wouldn't be a direct spiritual successor to Rive Gauche Pour Homme because it's closer to Zino Davidoff to me, but it's definitely a plus if it happens.

I've sent an email to TF's customer service to hopefully shed some light on this.

I'm holding back on buying a bottle at the moment as there's little need to do so if it becomes part of the signature line.

I know you say the original Ombre Leather has coveted status - but not really. Only for collectors. By the looks of things, most wearers are more than happy with the re-release at the lower price bracket, and if this occurs for BdJ, I see no reason why it would be any different.

Anyway, hopefully I get an answer one way or the other.

They're not going to confirm anything but the fact that the Private Blend is discontinued. You'll learn here if anything comes of it being added to the mainline before you hear it from a sales associate or their customer service.

    Forgot to update this.

    13/8/19: Email reply from TF.

"I am sorry to inform you that the Beau de Jour is being phased out, once the stock level has been depleted it will be discontinued."

"Unfortunately, we have no current information regarding this particular fragrance being re-released. Please accept my sincere apologies for any disappointment this has caused you."

A Fragrantica reviewer states in a recent review that Beau de Jour is now available in the Signature line bottles. Can anyone confirm this? A quick check on the Tom Ford website doesn't show it as being in the signature line yet.
