    Default Your guilty pleasure fragrance

Thought it’d be fun to make a thread about fragrances you love that are unpopular, looked down on in the fragrance community or even down right hated.

Mine would probably be Creed’s Original Santal.

I also still love Le Male.

I can't think that any Creed is worthy of being a guilty pleasure--despite the disdain that many feel, they are great, quality scents. Even Original Santal.

Love this stuff too. It almost smells like Skin Bracer but with a modern woody amber base. It gets really no talk at all but it was probably hugely influential among perfumers when we look at what's available now.

+1 Sauvage. I can't deny that I like the smell. Dylan Blue goes in that category too.

If I want to be perfectly honest, any fragrance I display ownership of that:

    - Isn't from a hyped artisinal perfumer (Bortnikoff, Areej le Dore, Slumberhouse, Bogue etc)
    - Isn't from an exorbitantly expensive prestige luxury name (Clive Christian, Creed, Roja Dove, Fragrance du Bois etc)
    - Isn't a deep vintage designer made before 1990
    - Isn't a discontinued fragrance from an esteemed house or perfumer
    - Isn't an overhyped "compliments monster" (i.e. anything YouTube reviewer scream about)
    - Isn't otherwise a display of "FragBro-in-the-Know-with-the-Dough" status in "The Game" of (competitively) collecting fragrance

...will likely be seen as an embarrassment by anyone taking themselves or this hobby too seriously.

So in short, about 80% of my collection, which consists of designers and drugstore scents from many historical periods, contemporary mainstream perfumes, some select cheapies, niche, luxury, a huge hunk of Avon, and stuff that nobody really talks about. Guess if I threw all that away and focused on the 2 dozen or so "respected" scents from the MFD populace, I'd be one of the cool kids.

Armani Acqua di Gio. Still in love after all these years. When I wear it, it just seems right.
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

Most of it is crap, but there are a few Zara fragrances I've enjoyed over the years. Gardens in the Desert Sand is my current fav. I will also always have a special place in my heart for A&F Fierce, which I wore for a few years in my late teens/early twenties. Wouldn't buy a bottle now but I do like walking past A&F just to get a whiff of it.

I own and enjoy quite a few fragrances that would probably get booed off the Basenotes stage.I'll limit my list to 5 that I think highly of, regardless of their price or prestige. In ABC order:

Cremo Blue Cedar and Cypress (nice modern take on a fougere styled fragrance)
Dubhill Desire Extreme (IMO this is far better than the original Desire, especially in the dry down. It surprised me at how much I genuinely enjoyed this one)
Liz Claiborne Lucky No. 6 (one of the earliest fragrances I bought, and I am still enjoying it today. I do see some similarities with Fahrenheit, but this is really its own thing)
American Crew Win (sniffed this out out at Target, and I was so impressed that I ended up buying a full bottle. This one actually has a bit of skank in the opening, while the dry down is full on mass appealing designer smelling)
Giorgio Beverly Hills Wings (I picked this up for next to nothing. It opens up as a clone of CW/GIT, but dries down into its own thing. I actually prefer this to CW)

In my opinion a "Basenotes Darling" is really no different than a mass-appeal fragrance, just on a microcosmic scale because the Basenotes population is smaller than the general public (obviously), but either way it's "the one you like/wear because everyone else around you will like you more if you do" effect. Just like mass-appeal scents, these are also subject to the fickle tastes of the crowd. Encre Noire also seems to be on the downward trend as a former "Darling" too. I still like it.
