Default Best citrus note for summer - your preference

So letís assume that you were shopping for a summer fragrance and you wanted to be citrus Dominant. Do you prefer those with top notes of orange, or lemon, lime, grapefruit, or something else? Give examples of which scents you like and why you like them?

I have wanted to like orange, and back in the 80s I would wear Hermes Eau de Orange Verte but I was always disappointed how was short-lived it was. I have tried to like Terre díHermes but have become very asnomic to it and Iím also disappointed. Used to wear Drakkar Noir and I think I might prefer lemon. I have Guerlain LíEau Boisee and I do not get the lime note. Love grapefruit like Aventus and canít smell it on me

I would say I prefer lemon or grapefruit. I donít think I know enough, or at least my nose cannot distinguish, between bergamot, citron, lemon or orange

I am prepared to view Eau Sauvage EDT as a cologne these days because I love its lemony notes so much. I accept that it won't last the whole day, just take it for what it is.

I can't think of a lovelier summer scent, but there again my knowledge in this area is about beginner level bordering on elementary.

Chanel Allure Homme Sport Cologne (the current 2016 version, not the older 2007 one!) - I prefer it over Edition Blanche and Dior Homme Cologne. It has a nice lemony mandarin on top and soft amber and musk in the base which works perfectly with my skin in the high summer heat.

I also like Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche. It has one of the best citrusy openings ever and a very interesting drydown with a special kind of armpits/gunpowder smell, which may sound weird but works very well, too. I love to wear it on rainy summer days.

If you like a little more gourmandy territory, you could also give Guerlain L'Homme Ideal Cologne a try. It has the sweet almondy L'Homme Ideal DNA tamed down a bit and combined with fresh and sparkly grapefruit notes. People around me enjoy that one a lot when I wear it.

    Yuzu, cedrat, bergamot

If we’re strictly fruit. Otherwise I’d put neroli and petitgrain up there ahead of yuzu, etc.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

I'm a big fan of both lime and coconut, but they are hard to master without smelling exactly like sunscreen. Back in the day I never considered pineapple as a viable note, but the rise of Aventus has made that a pretty good summer note as well. For some reason though, citrus just doesn't stick around on my skin that well.

Im also a fan of the frags with coconut, although I don't current own any. Yet.
I'm new to the game. Ive always had colognes but it's just been the past month or so. That said, what I've learned so far about myself is that my summer choices, and preferred notes depend on some things. If I'm looking for a sweeter scent, I love the coconut, pineapple, watery notes. Then there's ones like the Tommy Bahamas I have that are more...zesty I guess. Those, I honestly don't have a clue what the actual ingredients are in the note pyramid but if I had to guess I'd say there's grapefruit, as well some sort of salty marine note.

My favorite citrus note for summer is bergamot.

I'm such a sucker for bergamot, but I haven't found one that I love yet. Bergamot 22 by Le Labo dries down to a meh fake wood base. Bergamote Soleil by Atelier Cologne has the best bergamot note I've ever smelled, but again, the base isn't great.

My favorite citrus scent for summer is probably Aqua Universalis by MFK, or maybe Les Exclusifs Eau de Cologne by Chanel, but those are more of a mix of citruses rather than being dominated by one note. Both are excellent.

I currently prefer lime or orange or grapefruit.

I'm a little bored with the whole lemon/bergamot opening at the moment. And orange is used a lot less than you would think. I recently picked up AdP's Colonia Pura. It's a good one, but it's even better because it's got a great orange note driving the opening. It's different! If it was just a bergamot/lemon combo it would just open up like anything else, but the orange gives it some distinction.

Orange is a hard note to pull off well.

I'm all out of my supply of Colonia Pura, but that mandarin orange opening is one of the best I've found.

I do adore how orange is done in two of HermŤs' 2004 releases: Eau des Merveilles and Concentre d'Orange Verte.

On the subject of interesting orange openings, I sampled Azzaro Night Time today, which has a very unusual bitter orange/rhubarb kickoff. It doesn't lead anywhere exciting once it fades (just dark synthwood territory) but the rhubarb does hang out for a good bit. It would be a better composition if it had something like rosemary in the heart, but it's nevertheless a distinctive entry in the "freshie" category, especially in the designer realm.

Folks like Atelier Orange Sanguine, but I find something about the opening a bit weird.

Love the tart, less sweet, more sharp aspect of lime myself! Right now Madhats Palo Santo Plateau is my go to. Nice lime zest, a bit of incense-y wood, and sage. I love the cooling effect it seems to offer up in the scent profile. Not quite a lime slushy but close!

Ha! IKR?! Not for nothing but the longevity on all of them is pretty suspect including the much ballyhooed Mancera Lemon Line. It's nice but it doesn't last significantly longer than say, Edition Blanche. Į\_(ツ)_/Į

The Eau Tres Fraiche flanker of TDH has a much more realistic orange note. It's fresher and a little bitter like the rind. Only downside is the performance suffers next to the edt. L'eau boisee lime note reminds me of the taste of lime green popsicles I ate as a kid. For lemon, DHC, Eau sauvage, Ideal cologne, got plenty of those. I just picked up the Fraiche version of L'eau Dissey and Its not in the notes but I can smell some of the original Yuzu in there as well.

As hermeslyre notes, Guerlain L’Eau Boisee has a great popsicle/slushee limeade type note. I really like lime as well as orange. Hermes has a lot of good citrus stuff: TdH, Orange Verte Concentree, Citron Noir. I like bergamot too. Not a huge fan of lemon unless it’s a dark, bitter take like Citron Noir.

Xerjoff Renaissance has to be up there as one of the best citrus summer scents.

Bergamot, lime and mandarin with a touch of mint sitting on top of a woody, amber base. Lovely stuff.

Agree orange is tough to get right . TdH does to exceptionally, and although I like Dunhill 1934, I find its citrus to be too real like clementines!

As much as I enjoy a nice orange note (and, if done well, it's probably my favorite), more often than not I'm just looking for *unusual* citrus openings. Most citrus openings in fragrances feel kinda indifferent or bland, just a little something to give lift but without much investment in the note itself.

Now I think neroli. I wore Kurkdjian's APOM Homme almost exclusively for about two years. And just today I discovered Bvlgari Wood Neroli, which is about the best designer scent in years I've had the chance to try.

Petitgrain. Lemon when paired with vetiver. Yuzu in the right hands. Grapefruit was my favorite for sometime but it’s been so overdone that I’m a bit tired of it.
