Default Niche Fragrances - Best bang for the money

Today I sampled Clive Christian X picked up a sample of the fragrance a couple of days ago at Neiman Marcus. Received a 1.5 ml spray vial.
1.6 oz. bottle goes for $290 USD on Perfume.com
Did not enjoy the initial note, after 30 minutes it changed and I liked it even less. 3 hrs. later little if any scent beyond skin
Perhaps my expectations based on price and brand reputation were too high.
Maybe the sample bottle used to create my vial was old/ bad, nevertheless very disappointed.

This leads to my question [s]
Which niche fragrance on a value basis is your favorite? Which has been the worst you have purchased or sampled ?

Montales are best niche for price (under 200$)

Creed’s also great because quality should make them cost $500 but Creed charges far less

Dior masculine Parfums (qualify as niche?) are niche quality for good price

Not liking something that's very expensive is not a bad thing (for the budget). Never bought a Clive christian either.

As for something priced decently in niche, my favorite is the house of Etat Libre d'Orange. They start at about $95/50ml, and they tend to last well on me, most remaining consistent through the drydown. Shootout also to Parfums de Nicolai, which sells 30ml, a convenient size.

Enjoy Montale, Mancera, and Parfums de Nicolai among many others.

Certainly Mancera and Montale are great options but sampling is important once you move away from their top 3 sellers.

Nicolai New York Intense and Tauer’s L’air du Desert Marocain and Vanilla Flash are also heavy hitters pound for pound.

Miller Harris’ Feuilles De Tabac is another bargain option and a top 3 Tobacco for me.

Discounted Penhaligons and L’artisan also provide great value.

    Lets not forget discounted Guerlain.

In general, the niche stuff with wide distribution is not going to present the best bang-for-the-buck.

Montale often goes under $100 on eBay, as does Mancera.

Amouage has some of the best oriental perfumes in the business, and they go under $150 on eBay a lot

Penhaligion's get discounted often, sometimes under $60, also eBay

Creed floats between $100-$275 depending on which line it is ($100-$150 for Acqua Originale, $150-$200 for standard, $200-$275 for Les Royales Exclusifs) all on eBay

Parfums de Nicholai, Diptyque, L'Artisan Parfumeur, and Annick Goutal also represent a good value online for niche, as does Guerlain. These are older houses so there is a lot more stock flooding the gray markets than some relatively younger houses like Roja Dove or MFK.

Rogue's Mousse Illuminee is the best bang for my buck as far as niche goes. My 30 ml bottle will last me forever because I only need 1-2 sprays, it's really that strong. And that's coming from someone who has no problem wearing ~15 sprays of Fahrenheit.

The only Mancera I've sampled is Black Intensitive Aoud, which seems to be just as strong as Mousse Illuminee. Haven't purchased a full bottle from that house but I keep an eye on them on FragranceNet and they always hover around $80-90.

Sixteen92 has many good options as well, and lots of sizes/sample packs so you don't have to invest too much to try out their fairly wide variety of fragrances.

If potency and longevity are the fragrance currency you swear by, I agree nuclear-powered Mousse Illuminee will make you grin ear-to-ear like Batman’s Joker.

To the growing list I’ll add Etat Libre d’Orange, Tauer Perfumes, and West Third Brand.

Creed are ridiculously overcharging consumers whilst decreasing in quality and potency year by year.

Mancera and Montale are very affordable, Amouage is worth it and you can find a lot of their fragrances discounted. Tauer is good value as well. Dior is a designer house but make great quality affordable fragrances that surpass many niche houses, Guerlain is another good affordable option. Areej le Doré, Rouge Perfumery are worth the money.

Rogue Perfumery would be a good investment. Affordable vintage style fragrances that don't adhere to IFRA standards.
One example from the house would be Chypre-Siam.

Might get some push back on this one, but I have to go with Imaginary Authors on this one. 95 bucks for 50ml with frequent sales and pretty much all of them except for Saint Julep are beast mode performance on me. Hell, Memoirs of a Tresspasser might be my longest-lasting fragrance, period. Their scents may not be for everyone, but I really enjoy them, paritcularly Mosiac, Yesterday Haze, Cape Heartache, Sundrunk and Memoirs of a Tresspasser.

My definition of value = quality of scent, at least 6 hours of good performance ( I could clearly smell it, don’t really want something that projects across the room), smooth transitions from top, mid to base that do not end in huge overdose of amber woods ( I don’t mid ambrox iiso e, etc...just don’t want something to fade to that before the 6 hour mark).

With that criteria the best I’ve found were:

    Amouage
    MFK
    Tom Ford

Of course, it's only a good deal if you like them, but I think Oriza L. Legrand was a pretty fair price. I own and love a few from them.

  21. #21

Default Re: Niche Fragrances - Best bang for the money

Serge Lutens offer value for money, as do Montale apparently, though I don't have enough experience with them to evaluate..
Creed offer the least value for money in my opinion, and offer less each year. Their last two male releases seem like a bad joke at the price.

So far, seconding especially Penhaligon's, Lutens, Guerlain exclusives among the houses with best values obtained for the price.

Also adding the brands Hugh Parsons, Acqua di Parma, Floris, Knize, Caron, Houbigant, (Geo F) Trumper, Molinard, Carthusia to the fragrance houses that provide (near) niche quality for comparatively affordable, occasionally even bordering on inexpensive pricing.

And they're not "hot" brands so their offerings don't get the hefty "status symbol" upcharge.

As long as it's bought on the grey market where they're going for silly low prices. Uncle Serge has been jacking the retail prices up lately. Still solid fragrances, though.
