Default Would anyone be interested in a website dedicated to buying and selling used fragrances?

I've made the mistake of buying blind far too many times. Lately, when samples are unavailable for a scent I've been buying slightly used perfumes from ebay or the sales section here & I've scored some great deals as well as sold some perfumes that just didn't suit me. The problem with ebay however is the 10% they take as a commission and the sometimes ridiculous shipping costs.

As a web developer by trade I'm considering creating a website based marketplace dedicated for us enthusiasts/hopeless collectors to buy, sell and swap fragrances.

It will be kind of like an ebay or gumtree, but specifically tailored to used perfume sales. I think it could be a great way to test new scents & build a collection on a budget.

What do you think? Would anyone use such a website? Any thoughts?

Welcome to you Connoisseur3! Enjoy your time here at Basenotes! I personally wouldn't, but I'm sure there are many others who would.

Sounds like you're basically describing Crystal Flacon, which has been around for years. Rules are more relaxed than they are in the Basenotes marketplace. For instance, you can sell decants on the CF website.

The only problem is....it gets VERY little traffic.

However, it's just a message board format like Basenotes, not a website based marketplace, like you're talking about.

Then, there's the Facebook fragrance groups, but I don't personally know anything about them because I'm not on Facebook.

I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in such a thing, although the fragrance companies might do their best to interfere.

Sounds like you are describing Basenotes' Marketplace. There are some requirements to post there, so as to provide a degree of protection against scammers:
You are a Basenotes Plus member
    OR
You have been a member for over a year
    OR
You have made over 500 posts

I would certainly be interested. My only concern would be the high possibility of scammers, much like eBay.

    +1

While Iíve used BN and Crystal Flacon, it would be nice to have a dedicated site with (no offense to the BN web design but just sayin) a more contemporary interface/design. I tried joining one of the FB groups but still havenít had my membership approved, so canít speak to those. But with the right safeguards in place, I would definitely be interested.

Facebook and ebay have this tied up between them, not to mention the other specialist sites like this etc. where you'll have some decanting or trading going on.

There is probably space to centralise this, a perfume equivalent of what Reverb.com is to musical instruments, particularly guitars...but the issue comes with intellectual property rights. Perfumers and fashion houses detest people trading their (hugely profitable, hugely marked up) fragrances for less than retail. Some, like Chanel and, more recently, Creed, go to great lengths to stop people selling partial bottles, not to mention decants, on the likes of ebay, but also Facebook.

No site could ever successfully deal with this without having leverage on perfumers - something akin to new media about 10-15 years ago v print media, when the old media looked set to be under real peril. Or, perhaps more accurately, things like insurance comparison sites, or amazon: you're either WITH the huge monopoly auction site, or you're not.

Unless you can do that, you'll never create any sort of steam that would make it profitable for you or those who sell on it. And as soon as you start pulling decent numbers, you can guarantee you'll get shut down asap by those with vested interests.

Nice idea, but I think the ship has sailed on that front in terms of forging new ground. Ebay is more than adequate for selling used perfume - it's just the veracity and quality of seller/perfume you'll find on it that is the issue.

And in the UK, at least, fragrance groups are working really, really well. Only a bare minimum of scammers, there are some real characters in there who keep things ticking over, and plenty of people with deep pockets, and probably an addiction to buying and selling perfume, which makes it a good place to both buy and sell.

Yes, I belong to two Facebook private groups where people, as well as chatting sell, decants, used bottles and samples.

Rarely does a scammer get a foot in the door and quickly banned.
