    Default Niche starter bottle

I’m very new to the fragrance world and just now venturing out to the niche world.

Aside from PMD Layton, what else would you guys suggest for my “first” purchase?

Perhaps take a look at the Montale and Mancera houses and see if you are drawn to any of their offerings.

I’m relatively new as well and yeah, I’ve recently purchased Mancera Cedrat Boise and it’s enjoyable and can be found reasonably priced

My recommendation for your next purchase is a couple dozen samples instead of a bottle. Try Luckyscent.

So much to choose from! Perhaps you can start from the entry-level (in terms of price) niche-which are around $95/50ml, so things like Dyptique, Montale, or my favorite Etat Libre d'Orange houses.

This would be a good starting point. Also visiting some of your local department stores if it's in close proximity would be helpful as well.

I would suggest participating in some the splits here on Basenotes. This is a great way to collect a good number of nice fragrances without having to invest in a full bottle.

Also perhaps a smaller or larger/more diverse set of sample bottles by niche houses like Amouage, Penhaligon's or others that provide assorted sampling sets, at least before purchasing a full bottle

What genre/ types of fragrances do you like?

My first niche was Tuscan Leather.

Personally I think Layton is so bad!
I'd recommend to buy a bunch of samples or 5ml decants instead

I love the sets of mini's. I don't have an Amouage one, but I would like one.

I agree with others here. Don't blind-buy stuff, just go for samples and decants. This will help you figure out the lay of the land and then you can go ahead and buy bottles of the stuff you can't live without.

+1 for Mancera. That house is a good starting point.

+1-Mancera Cedrat Boise. However , you might want to try it first as there is a distinct patchouli note in it.

    -1 Mancera Cedrat Boise
I was very disappointed with it - quite strong chemical smell, but if you spray away from your nose - it's bearable.
Get samples instead of bottles, don't repeat everyone's mistake

Just try one of the Serge Lutens orientals. This house was my personal intro to niche perfumery 10 years ago. It blew my socks off then before doing a number on my bank account LOL.

Creed Green Irish Tweed, Mancera Lemon Line, and Mancera Cedrat Boise are relatively easy to like, and are good places to start. Also, PdM Herod is excellent, besides the disappointing performance.
