Default Looking for a specific type of woody scent

I'm looking for a specific type of woody scent, I'm sure there's a proper fragrance adjective for it but I'll try to describe what I'm looking for as best as I can, and provide examples of what I'm NOT looking for as well.

I'm looking for a scents that are dry, crisp and woody. Something in the vein of Bvlgari Extreme (1999 version), Terre D'Hermes, Lacoste Essential, Ormonde Jayne Man, Penhaligon's Bayolea, CdG Hinoki and CdG Kyoto.

I love vetiver, but I have enough vetiver scents in my collection so I'm not looking for vetiver dominant scents or woody scents with a heavy vetiver note like Lalique Voyageur, Guerlain L'eau Boisee or Encre Noire Sport.

I'm also not looking for frags with a heavy patchouli note like Guerlain Heritage or Zino Davidoff.

What frags would you recommend that feel similar to the first group? I'm not looking for frags that smell exactly like them, like Montale Red Vetiver being close to TdH or Mancera Kumkat Wood being close to Ormonde Man. More of a similar feel. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, and I'm open to niche and designer.

Perhaps Splendid Wood by YSL. I find it dry, crisp and of course woody. No vetiver or patchouli.

Explorer by Mont Blanc - crisper and simpler than Aventus. Note go on about vetiver and patchouli, but it’s less patchouli prominent than Aventus. Opens with crisp bergamot before drying down to cedary pencil shavings.

Sugi - crisper and airier than Hinoki, although not as explicitly woody/cedary.

Maybe some of Ellena’s other riffs on the woody TdH theme. I haven’t tried it, but Poivre Samarcande is often recommended. Even Jardin Sur le Nil, although the base isn’t as woody as TdH.

Dior’s Cologne Royale in the exclusive range is an EdC style with some mint and lily. (Not lily of the valley) that has a very crisp woody base.

Tam Dao EdT - the EdT is crisper and features more cedar than the EdP. Perhaps the heart is a bit creamier than you want, but it’s hard to say.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

Ive been meaning to check Explorer out, I'll go smell it tomorrow. I like the Jardin line, especially Nil but they have a more wet/lush/floral feel to them, not quite as crisp as I'm looking for.

I'll give Tam Dao a go too, thanks!

Cedro di Taormina by Acqua di Parma is quite nice and fits your criteria. It’s on the “lighter side” of the woody spectrum.

Miller Harris’ La Fumee Classic is also worth exploring. This is woody, arid, smokey, balsamic and very well done.
I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

Amouage Epic Man. Dry: check. Crisp: there's a green myrtle note in this that is reminiscent of Tsar which gives it a fresh aspect (think of classic Italian citrus scents). Woody: Check, with oud, cedar wood and sandalwood.

    Odori Cuoio
    - clean, crisp, hints of wood & leather. Discontinued but available on eBay & secondary market from time to time.

    Ramon Monegal Agar Musk
    - clean, stripped down oud & white musk

Frederic Malle French Lover/ Bois d’Orage
    - elegant mossy woods

Notable others with similar crisp feel to them IMO:

    Miller Harris Feuilles du Tabac

    Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand

    Floris No.89

    Le Galion Eau Noble

    Le Galion Special for Gentleman

    Creed Bois du Portugal

I recommend Chanel Egoiste to the list of suggestions. A nice take on sandalwood.

    Hmm,

The Sandalwood that is the most dry/medicinal I tried in my samples was Kilian - Sacred Wood. If you're looking for 'dry', it's the most pure presentations of Sandalwood I've sampled.

Tam Dao EDP is certainly worth a sample and I think you'll find it's not dry, but rather smooth. I'm not sure if Tam Dao EDP is on your radar considering you want 'dry', but I think you'll enjoy it and it will be worthy of consideration regardless. There is a good dose of Cedar wood in it too. There is some kind of milky note in there that smooths it.

I have no opinion on Ouds because I don't care for that genre. I respect it, but it's not my thing, so I can't give a valid opinion on it.

As some others said, Comme des Garcons - Wonderwood, is a pleasing woody fragrance.

    +1 Tam Dao EdT
    +1 Wonderwood

Also adding Santal Majuscule to the list. A very dry sandalwood and cedar mixture with added cocoa and a touch of rose.

    Bowmakers. Smells like a woodshop.
Serge Lutens Chene smells sweet wood for the first hour. When you get past that, this has the most realistic, dry and crisp oak smell. Expensive though.
Imagiary Authors Whispered Myths. Cedar that turns a little oudy after an hour.
Profumum Roma Arso. Wood and incense.
    Matriarch The Red Room

Very straight forward woody scents that doesn't try to be anything else though, not sure if that's what you're looking for.

Hwyl is great if you're after something like Hinoki. To me it smells like a more natural version of Hinoki. It doesn't have the steamy note from the opening of Hinoki, and the base is dry moss rather than the musk that is in the base of Hinoki. Definitely not a vetiver-prominent scent. The incense plays a nice supporting role for the cedar/cypress keeping it crisp and dry.

Santal 33 also definitely worth checking out.
