Default Giving something back to Basenotes this August

I've spent six months on Basenotes!

I enjoyed fragrances before I came here and had amassed a number of them already, but in those six months my collection has also swelled! Every day, it seems I hear about something new worth trying from all of you delightful, quirky folks. As such, my purchases of samples, decants, and bottles has spiked tremendously since I came here.

Unfortunately, I don't like clutter. So, when looking at my shelves over the past few weeks, I was struck with a realization that I own a good few bottles and substantial set of samples/decants I have no intention of wearing again. I *could* put them up in the Basenotes marketplace, and I've done so in the past (and, I should add, I've had great experiences doing so), but that won't clear up the clutter quickly enough for my tastes. So, instead, I've decided to offer these up as a way to mark my membership here and give something back to you all.

So, what am I offering up? An eccentric collection of samples and bottles that includes offerings from commonplace designer houses and luxury niche houses as well as some more obscure offerings from artisan fragrance houses. Much of the stuff included here is more contemporary (read: the last two decades), but there's at least one blast-from-the-past scent here, too. There are a number of things in here even some long-term members probably won't have tried. That said, these scents mostly occupy a single style lane; they're mostly what I think of as decadent "autumnal" scents. So if you don't really like opulent scents or gourmands, then this probably isn't the collection of stuff for you! Most of these are masculines, as you might expect, but I do think that a good number of these offerings wear safely "unisex."

Who is eligible? Anyone who has been a Basenotes member for at least two months and lives in the continental US. I realize that excludes a great many of you. I like you all so much and wish everyone could be eligible, but as this is already a "just for fun" exercise, I'm not looking to increase my shipping costs or hassle. This parcel will ship via ground shipping.

What do you have to do to enter? I love art. So, in order to enter, you simply have to reply to this thread with a post including an image of your favorite painting, as well as the name of a fragrance that you think would pair well with it.

You all have until August 31st, 2019 to throw your name into the hat. The recipient of the parcel will be chosen at random on September 1st. After receipt of the parcel has been confirmed, I'll let you all know what was inside.

I'm a film major and love concept art for film. No one did it better than Ralph McQuarrie. This is my favorite one.
A scent? Hmmm.....I guess, with my limited exposure, all I can see is Fahrenheit. It's scent gives me the visual of oil, heat, leather....similar smells that you would find in a 'lived in' sci-fi environment.

Ok, since this is such an incredible idea for a thread, I'd like to toss in a couple bonus comparisons (also because, while the above was my favorite frag, it wasn't my favorite piece of art. Below are only a couple favorite paintings):

Chanel - No. 5 & Kandinsky - Circles in Circle

While maybe not my favorite painting of all-time, one that sticks out is Verdant Catacombs by Ryan Yee. I feel this painting pairs perfectly with Norne by Slumberhouse since the image of a dank, dark, lichen infested forest practically oozing black sludge is exactly what Norne goes for.

It's not all dark though, as little whisps of light break through the dense canopy, which acts not unlike the almost bright incense notes found in the fragrance. Great stufff all around!

The smell is dusty and earthy which reminds me of the end of summer when the days can oscillate between final bursts of summer heat and the first chills of autumn. Perfect for long strolls and naps in/under trees.
Scent is an exercise in patience and imagination.

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli... Battaniye by Pekji would be a good match. This, is one of my all time favorite paintings.

I'm throwing my hat in the ring because even though I have a full wardrobe, the scents you mention are exactly what I enjoy.

So this painting was done by my wife, and it originally started with inspiration from the tree pictured. We happened to be in Colorado at the time, so things got a little out of control, and thats all ill say about that lol. Anyway, the bright colors kind of took over from the greys and reds and browns and i think it just turned out to be a really cool interpretation of the tree, which was already pretty cool.

As far as a fragrance that pairs with it - i was thinking an oud oil by Habzoud i tried one time, i think it was Alsukar 2. It had almost the exact feeling of what this painting shows, you got the oud but as it evolved all the different facets started to emerge and show the different colors of the oil. it was a trip, man lol.

The album cover for Metallica Load was the first thing that popped into my mind. This art was created by Andres Serrano. The fragrance pairing is, of course, Etat Libre d’Orange Secretions Magnifiques.

EDIT: I am on my iPhone and I am not certain how to make the image show up automatically, but I’ve seemed to add it as an attachment to this post. Apologies, as I’m not good at anything tech on a phone.

What a wonderfully generous idea. I’m also a huge fan of art and an artist myself. It’s quite difficult to pick a favorite work, but I was able to triangulate into it based on certain factors.

    1) My favorite style of art is primarily espoused by Juxtapoz magazine and Hi-Fructose mag...pop surrealism/cartoon-influenced/low-brow/graffiti or street murals. Although it’s a loose categorization that can hold many different artists, it’s for the most part represented by the collections represented in those magazines.

    2) To select my favorite work, I narrowed in on the quintessential pop surrealist artists represented in this category. Some of the most successful ones include Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr, Robert Williams, Alex Grey, Joe Coleman, Shephard Fairey, OsGemeos, Banksy, Camille Rose Garcia, Camille D’Errico, and Shag.

    3) I then focused on the two who inspired me directly—Mark Ryden and Todd Schorr. The unusual aspect here is that neither inspired my art, they inspired scenes in my second novel A Greater Monster. I wrote many of the scenes by visualizing them three-dimensionally—the characters and environments, rather than by plotting or crafting characters, I visualized the scenes like a tableau and then let them play out in my imagination. I meditated on several paintings by Mark Ryden and Todd Schorr that came to life in characters in the book.

    4) The below image is one that not only did I meditate on to create a character in the book, but I also made a Halloween costume of a red spacesuit with the fetus in its belly so that has pretty much clinched my favorite painting. It’s called Princess Sputnik painted in 1998, oil on canvas 32” x 22”

I would pair this with Slumberhouse Ore...which technically I did because that is the fragrance I selected to wear to the Halloween party where I wore the costume. Slumberhouse is a good house to represent the outsider art world because it’s quirky and independent minded and generally outside the mainstream. But Ore is also spicy and warm and inviting as good representational art should be...it invites you in to discover more about the work and learn the story it tells, to find the hidden narrative in the painting.

What a great idea, on top of a very generous one!

Gustave Doré is one of my favorite artists, and I love epic poetry. Doré did illustrations for a number of authors, including Tennyson, Milton, and Edgar Allen Poe, but my favorite of these is Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

    34E24111-470E-4379-BAFE-25E7A9F3C61F.jpg

How long in that same fit I lay,
    I have not to declare;
But ere my living life returned,
I heard and in my soul discerned
    Two voices in the air.

'Is it he?' quoth one, 'Is this the man?
By him who died on cross,
With his cruel bow he laid full low
    The harmless Albatross.

The spirit who bideth by himself
In the land of mist and snow,
He loved the bird that loved the man
Who shot him with his bow.'

The other was a softer voice,
    As soft as honey-dew:
Quoth he, 'The man hath penance done,
    And penance more will do.'

Edit: I forgot to add the fragrance! I don’t think I’ve tried anything that quite captures this piece. Perhaps Tom Ford Noir Anthracite, though I don’t think it’s cold or austere enough.

I love art art just as much if not more than fragrance. One of my most beloved artists is Gustav Klimt and his Pallas Athene is IMO a natural match for Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Ambre Precieux.

I have chosen The Problem We All Live With by Norman Rockwell. It is his depiction of 6 year old Ruby Bridges being escorted by nameless, faceless marshalls to her new elementary school during desegregation. It hits the full range of emotions: anger, sadness, frustration, admiration, hope...it is a stark, bold depiction of a bold young woman during a scary and trying time.

    Fragrance: English Leather
Ubiquitous at the time, I can imagine the marshalls around her emanating that scent.
