Based on what you own, one good bet that you would love is Creed - Royal Oud. Creeds are easy to like. Even though I'm pretty sure you will love Royal Oud I still believe that niche fragrances should be sampled first before buying. So many niche scents are acquired tastes or will appeal to a very narrow number of noses. Royal Oud is a scent that appeals to 'most' noses just like designers do, but the ingredients smell a bit more natural.

Yes Creed would be one of the easier houses to enjoy although they're a bit pricey. Tom Ford would be another easy choice to get started with although also expensive.

The best thing to do would be to visit (or multiple visits) your local department stores like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue or designer boutiques if available otherwise consider Nordstroms, and Bloomingdales.

Participating in Basenotes splits are also a good route to take. It would cut down on cost avoiding expensive bottles while having a large arsenal of niche decants to choose from. Once you have a better idea of what you like and don't like you can consider the possibility of investing in full bottles. Good luck.

You'd love older niche houses like

    Annick Goutal
    L'Artisan Parfumeur
    Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier
    Marc de la Morandier
    Diptyque
    Creed
    Parfums de Nicholai

But as always, look for ingredients and styles adjacent to your vintage tastes and sample sample sample!

I just read ClairV’s article that was linked here. It’s a really informative read IMO. I’m definitely going to use it as a resource in my research.

OP, as mentioned already, Creed may be up your alley. Aventus and Green Irish Tweed are two extremely popular releases from this house. I have both of them, and personally, I do feel they are worth the money. Having said that, search online and get them much cheaper than full retail. Both of these are mass pleasing, and aren’t at all what I would consider challenging.

I have only a handful of niche bottles myself, and I tend to gravitate toward fragrances that aren’t necessarily as safe, so I’ll leave additional recommendations to the experienced niche pros.

Good luck, and let your own tastes guide you.

An excellent suggestion especially New York Intense and Patchouli Intense (my personal favorite from the house.) Also Rogue Perfumery is worth checking out.

But I would suggest also going out of your comfort zone. Why pay "niche" prices for fragrances which are in the same style as your cheaper favorites?

I actually like Tom ford noir and black Orchid alot. But was really good , didn't think that as a niche cologne but I've been having my eyes on that also on Creed

Your apprehensiveness is well founded, haha! I'd pick up some carded samples of Amouage on eBay. If you'd like some recommends I'd say:

    Memoir
    Reflection
    Jubilation XXV
    Interlude
    Bracken
    Epic
    Honour
    Journey
    "I drank what?" -Socrates

Get yourself to a high end department store and sample as much as you can. Be sure to only buy what you love.

Sample, sample then sample again before taking the plunge on niche unless money is no object.

Creed and Parfums de Nicolai are good places to start IMO.

this is good advice -- the leap from the mall fragrances you have been using to hardcore 'niche' can be jolting

You won't find the most interesting niche stuff at American department stores (even the high-end ones will disappoint). Your best bet is to single out some notes and styles that you'd like to explore and do some research and then order some samples or decants.

I sample Tom Ford Noir , and Tom Ford black Orchid, Noir didn't really last long on me then it again it was like 100 degrees outside. But the smell on both of them is like no other ..very unique and I'm considering my first step with TF..if I do I'll think I'll go with Noir Extreme..I really wanna smell Tabacoo Vinalle..so I'm gonna try a sample off eBay and if I like it I'll buy that for starters, also Creed aventus and Irish Tweed , I read that's the most talked about then I can move forward..money isn't the issue .I buy alot of vintages , well colognes that was before the destruction from IFRA and started to out restrictions on them..and they can get pricey..so why not go with something new and different aswell

First you blind buy a hyped niche scent, preferably one that retails at at least twice the price of anything else you own. It does not live up to the hype in any way, of course, but you 'Emperor's New Clothes' yourself and sing its praises, now that you have spent a fortune on this bottle. You buy a couple of other hyped niche scents until you finally see, that the emperor is not wearing any clothes and that there is as much shit in the niche section of the store as in the mainstream.

BUY SAMPLES AND TRY STUFF IN STORES AND FORGET THE PRICE/EXCLUSIVITY, EXPECTATIONS, HYPE AND THE (REAL OR PERCEIVED) STREET CRED BUYING A PARTICULAR WILL GET YOU!!!!#%/")!!#!%!!!!!

    And breathe out..... Woooosaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Seriously, sample stuff and forget about hype and appearances, you'll find both dragon turds and priceless gems in the dragon's treasure hoard. Good luck

Since money isn't an issue, I'd take $150 or so and buy a bunch of samples. Something like this on eBay, 36 niche samples (Atelier, Tom Ford, Kilian, Le Labo, Serge Lutens, etc).

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-36-M...4AAOSwinlcuY7y

If you want other brands, like Creed, just do the same with a search.
    Most worn:

Black Comme des Garçons, Borneo 1834 Serge Lutens, Patchouli Santa Maria Novella

    This, basically.
There are a few classic fougeres in your list. maybe MFK is a good place to start. They do some well crafted scents in this style.

Based on your listed favourites, you might want to try Rogue Perfumery’s Mousse Illuminee and Tabac Vert.

Where you're in Providence (hello, fellow Southern New Englander!), why not pop over to the "bougie" side of the city for Providence Perfume Company? Charna, the perfumer and owner, is very nice. Their stuff is definitely expensive as it is an all-natural brand, but there are different sizes available. I'm not sure that their style will be completely tailored to the interests you list, but I can guarantee a good experience and an opened mind.

Also, reach out to another RI perfumer, January Scent Project! https://www.januaryscent.com/ Again, this'll be pretty different to what you're used to...but, hey, you wanted to jump into niche, right? Try their sample pack and see what you like.

Also, I second Parfums de Nicholai!

Start with buying Patrick by Fragrances of Ireland and experience that niche has nothing to do with price!

    Three good strategies imho:

    1) Stick to the safer niche houses, such as Creed. Who doesn't like a crowd pleaser?
    2) Buy discovery sets, preferably those that include a voucher. Although not the steal it used to be, Atelier Cologne has a good offer.
    3) Follow the noses of your favourite designers who have ventured into niche territory for various brands. For instance, if you like Burberry, you may also like what Antoine Maisondieu made for Essential Parfums, Comme des Garçons, or Etat Libre d'Orange.
