As a fougere is already a varied category, and features materials restricted in use these days, what would you consider avant-garde?

Modern interpretations of fougeres are generally more backward-looking than forward.

Perhaps Homme by Courreges although not sure how worthy it is for being thought of as "avant-garde".

Modern interpretation : Penhaligon's Sartorial (Duchaufour)

Gothy fougere (so galbanum, many cloves, wow) : Jacomo de Jacomo
September rotation - time for leather, incense, darkness and smoke : Knize Knize Ten, Etro Gomma, Caron Yatagan, Gucci Guilty Absolute, Penhaligon's Elixir, CdG Avignon, Robert Piguet Casbah, Etro Vetiver, Lalique Encre Noire, and Jacomo Jacomo de Jacomo.

For very avantgarde, I'd say Louis by The Zoo: strange aromatics, drydown tilted towards iris and a strange powdery stuff.

For less drastic reinterpretations, "nugeres" like Invasion Barbare or said Sartorial.

Not sure if it's "deconstructed" exactly, but including a juicy apple note and hefty does of immortelle sure adds an interesting twist.

    It's a nice fragrance too.

I'd maybe consider Azzaro pH Intense. One of the only true fougere's I know that completely reinterprets it.

When I think of deconstructed and modern in the Fougere category I think Sauvage but probably not what you want to hear.
More traditional but very modern is Masculin Pluriel.

I think zoologist has a couple weird fougeres:
Rhinoceros has a fougere/leather thing going on and Dodo is a total reimagining of the genre and too weird for some.

I like Sultan Pasha’s fougeres which are unique in that they are attars: especially Fougere Noire but also Etude en Fougere.

I was actually gonna recommend this too, but when he says "reinterpret the genre", I was thinking he's probably looking for more of the classic ingredients and not the modern aromachemicals.

Technically the term fougere isn't really good to use alone anymore, when literally every other fragrance release is labeled as a fougere nowadays.

    Yes Dodo. Very unique.

Also Mem by Bogue I think is a fougere and extremely modern and unique.

Penhaligon's Sartorial and JSP Eiderantler are great suggestions.

YSL Kouros, HdP 1725, Morabito Or Black and Chanel Boy have a pretty classic structure imo, nothing avant-garde here.
