It was being discussed in the Frederic Malle The Moon thread.

"Leather" is rarely done well in fragrances, but I do like the notes with this one.

I am cautiously optimistic. Thanks for the info on this one.

I sure hope JC Ellena’s not simply repackaging his Kelly Caleche from 2007...

Nice to see Ellena doing another fragrance from Frederic Malle.

Ellena just did that rose scent for Perris Monte Carlo...that I spoke about here, Rose de Mai

    I'm very interested. I love Frederic's Floral/Rose based scents.

I'm curious just because it supposedly has no rose in it at all, rather an impression of rose that's never been done before.

I smelled it last week. There is leather, and a bit of tomato leaf, but I didn’t get the rose. It is quite light and sheer, true to Ellena’s Hermessence style. I was underwhelmed, but not shocked. Pass for me.

Ah okay. Thanks for sharing your feedback. That diminishes my excitement, but I'd try it when I can.

Maybe for a while, but certainly not his first. Unless they mean his previous feminine offerings are not really “feminine”? But then from a couple of wearings from my sample I don’t find Rose & Cuir is especially “feminine” either...

That's what I assumed they meant. I haven't smelled much of his outside of FM, his most feminine in FM (not tried cuir & rose yet) to me is L'eau d'hiver but I find that one very unisex (on the one hand it's like nivea cream for men with some anise seed like note, on the other hand it's a rather "white" and a hint of honey, with initial burst of bergamot). So far I've certainly found JCE's creations quite otherworldly and makes me imagine a lot of things like landscapes and particular moments in my life, whereas some other fragrances (even ones I like) make me think of the smell in a more basic way.

I see - it certainly makes more sense in the context of his work for Frederic Malle only.

    A well blended fragrance.
A 100 % Ellena style of Hermes period.

Geranium at start + Eau de Pampelouse Rose type of rose + grapefruit + boozy accord that smells of wine

As a result, Rose & Cuir smells like a concoction of Jour d'Hermes, Eau de Pampelouse Rose and maybe Tuscan Leather (the type of leather is not dirty or "jacket" being closer to TL type).

Tried this recently. Two shots to the hand.

Right from the very beginning it was apparent that there was no rose or leather in this - and I was right. Agree that it is quite boozy.
I got a pencil-shavings type of note (ISO E Super?) and what I would refer to as "white musks", especially towards the end - I can only describe this as something being close to the original Cartier Declaration EdT which JCE also created.

I have a carded sample which I will revisit in due course.

Sounds like a dial-in piece of work by JC Ellena. Maybe it was originally meant for Le Labo.

The thought had occurred to me. It almost seems unfinished.

Agree, I don’t understand this one. The opening promises so much then the mid and dry down are thin and unsatisfying. I find it quite soulless, maybe intentionally so? Certainly not a “pretty” or traditionally feminine scent, in any case. I agree with those saying it is vegetal and sharp, almost like stale red wine, and on both wearings that sharpness has given me a headache.

Edit: in the heart, it reminds me of Diptyque’s L’Ombre dans L’Eau, with its Cassis/Rose accord, only drier and sharper - the Diptyque has a very “damp”/“wet” vibe which I don’t get from this one at all. I happen to detest the Diptyque, so those who enjoy it may also find more to like about this one.

Just ordered my bottle of this as I adore both Malle and Ellena. The Geranium note concerns me as it’s often used as a cheaper substitute for rose, but will have to wait and see...
