Default No idea where to start? First Post. Help?

    Hi all,

I have read through the forum over the past couple of days and feel both more educated and more lost than before I started!

I really don't know what I want in a fragrance. But due to the fact that I have an inability to throw nice bottles away, I still have practically every fragrance bottle I've ever owned. They are

Burberry touch (probably my closest thing to a signature scent. Been rebuying for over a decade)
Polo green (my dad's signature scent. Will always have a bottle in my wardrobe)

Paco rabanne - invictus (my most recent purchase. Not a huge fan though. Doesn't perform very well for me. Will still see it out as I stupidly blind bought a big bottle)

Givenchy - xerus rouge (I really like this fragrance)

Those are the only 4 that I still have quantities remaining. My empties are

    Dolce gabanna light blue (empty)
    Bvlgari man (empty)
    Polo red (empty)
    Polo blue (empty)
    Polo Black (empty)
Ysl live jazz (empty) - would have rebought but price was pretty high at the time of running out
    Hugo boss - baldessanim (empty)
    Calvin klein ck one (empty)

Other than this I have some classic splash colognes/lotions from old spice, proraso and the such.

From the list above, the only 2 that I will 100% keep rebuying is polo and burberry touch (both are more for the memories I guess). I didn't hate any of the fragrances from above, I mean I finished the bottles, but don't feel compelled to get again.

Now I have put together a list of fragrances that I wish to sample.

    Ysl LA nuit de l'homme
    Dior sauvage
    Ysl kouros
    Bleu de Chanel
    Terre d'hermes
    Versace dreamer
    Mugler pure havane
    Dolce gabanna the one
    Dior Fahrenheit
    Chanel antaeus
    Viktor rolf spice bomb
    Coach for men
    Versace eros flame
    Aqua Di gio profumo
    Chanel egoiste
    Lalique encre noire

I would like to have as much chance as possible of finding my new favourite scent. So please recommend anything that you think needs to be tested.

    Thanks in advance!

    Daniel

Welcome! Seems like a good starting point to me. Lots of variation! If you haven’t smelled any of them before, you are bound to find something you like. However, may I suggest that you sample these fragrances to learn more about your own taste as opposed to using them as a short list on what to buy? When you learn more about your likes and dislikes it will be much easier to find fragrances that you not merely like but also love. Of course, if you are just looking for something that smells nice, then any one of them (besides Kouros :P) will do fine.

I do intend on picking up samples first if available. Hoping to avoid blind buying wherever possible. Are there any good UK sites to get samples from? Otherwise I guess I'll just be making trips to fragrance stores and pestering staff . Thanks! Daniel

Fragrance is my favorite thing. So much so that if I leave the house and I don't put any on, I'll turn around and go back home.

I love sampling. I was especially into it a few years ago, and would drop money on orders more often than I do now.

Just wondering, why Versace Eros Flame and not the original Eros? I own and love Eros and have sampled the "flame" flanker and did not like it. The original is very nice

Good question - my brother likes Eros so I will just pinch some of his to sample next time I visit .

It seems like that is a good list. If you need to start, it is good to start with all the favorites and narrow your tastes down from there.
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.

    Current Polo, Current Kouros

Do buy: Antaeus, vintage is better but current is ok

    Do buy: Fahrenheit, see above

Hey - thanks for the recommendations! How do I go about purchasing vintage stuff? My dad frequently mentions that polo is 'not what it used to be' and I'd love to get him a bottle for Xmas. (maybe one for myself, too!)

Unless you know someone, eBay is probably your best bet.

Vintage Polo, Warner or Cosmair, can usually be found by typing in those type of names for search, or just "vintage Polo" in fragrances. And preferably sealed. Polo prices for vintage are usually quite reasonable.

Kouros is getting fairly expensive but I don't consider what is on the market today being a reasonable representation, ie not worth buying.

So my first batch(1 of 2) of samples arrived today.

The ones in this batch are

    Fahrenheit
    Sauvage
    Eau sauvage
    Dior homme
    Versace dreamer
    Guerlain l'homme ideal
    Guerlain vetiver

Fahrenheit is unlike anything Ive ever smelt before. I am completely in love with this. Definite winner of this batch and I'm gonna buy a bottle ASAP.

I quite liked all of the fragrances. But id say my personal top 3 were probably

    Fahrenheit
    Guerlain l'homme ideal
    Dior sauvage

Fahrenheit was head and shoulders above though. Cannot believe its taken me so long to check it out

You're fortunate that Dior has returned it to it's former glory, more or less. Recent stuff is very good.
